Title: NOS1 first impression
Post by: KnB on January 04, 2011, 09:58:01 pm
Received my NOS1 7 days ago   23 moths and 24 days waiting was over.
But it took some time to sort out things. My PC did not work at all, took the easiest way out and ordered a new one. (for the time beeing I am borrowing from a friend.)
Start problems was quickly forgotten from the first tune. First impression: WOW, WOW and WOW.

Thank you Peter!

Connected without pre to my 300b (borderpatrol s10) amp for testing, and it did work clean sound -but missing some weight punch and body.
Will do more testing when dac are burned in and I have received and setup my own PC. Aiming for a setup without pre, but as today using pre are better in my system (and for my ears.)

Did I mention how pleased I am with the sound?   :grazy:

Nice to hear !

And of course you can always use the pre when it is better to your ears. But eventually (after a small month of having the NOS1 *and PC* (always) on), it should be better without pre. If not it may be time to analyse what you exactly perceive for better and for worse, and see what can be done about it.
But that time is not now yet ...

The PC, really? If it's an Atom or a laptop, this would be fine, but for a mega-watt monster, this seems OTT. What is the advantage of this? Does the PC 'settle down' with time? Or does it help the NOS1 interface burn in?

Mani.

The unexpected for you : i2s keeps on running, which in the end is the DAC board. Just for breaking in that is.

Hi Peter,
after some difficulties to get things run, the first four weeks are over.
The SQ of the NOS1 is in comparison to my € 3750,00 DAC astonishing. I had the same impression from the beginning, when I moved from a “wooden housing” speaker to a speaker with a full metal construction.
The NOS1 delivers so much additional informations I  have not heard before. The NOS1 offers  a big sound and has an exceptional resolution (the drums have now the accentuation as heard in a Jazz cellar) This DAC takes you to places you’ve never been before.
One of my reference recordings is “Dance of the Harlequin” from Vertu (Stanley Clarke +  Lenny White), the violin sounds like a violin with the typical resin sound, and Lenny White is working on his drums with brushes. This resolution and detail was new for me. (on some systems the violin sounds like a saw and you have to cut down the song) The bass from Stanley Clarke is amazing.
When I read Mani’s comparison between the Model Two and the NOS1 I have to agree in every detail. The NOS1 is a bargain and worth every cent.
The SQ with the NOS1 is lifting my audio chain to a higher level, which I believed was not possible.
The drums and the bass!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This DAC is a great audio component and with all the praise it is time for you to celebrate a big party in Spring at your “small home” in Oene.  You are responsible for the tent, the  meals and the “fluids” are by us. :) :)

Best
Joachim

Ah, and who is going to take care of the music ? All I know is I have a couple of "ABBA-like" syntesizers. Yes, there are really three of them there. :swoon:
And some more stuff.

Joachim, thank you for being so happy. Really great to read it like that.
Peter
