Title: What is your 32 bit possible SFS size ?
Post by: PeterSt on February 03, 2011, 07:10:27 pm
... for Straight Contiguous ?

So, this is about Vista 32 bits or W7 32 bits (XP can't do this anyway).
I never tried W7, but I can if necessary.

I'm asking in order to be prepared a little on what will happen with 0.9z-4-1;
Before on my Vista 32 (SP1) (and I'm not even sure anymore) I could use an SFS of maybe 8 max, but only only time (ber boot). Now, with some little tricks I'm at 36 and it will run forever (when I'm all finished with it). But, I really don't know how much this depends on the "system".
Of course I am not using a RAMDisk here.

Also, with whatever number you come up with, it is also good to know how much your OS shows as useable; You can see this in the Performance tab of Taskmanager in the Physical Memory section under "Total". Mine says 3062, but it can be less and it can be more (up to some 3500).

In the mean time a warning :
Tricks exist to let the 32 bit OS see more memory. Even up to over 4GB. But, *never* attempt to do this; you may end up with a not booting system, parts not working anymore (incl. audio), or (memory) processes which will be more slow because of "remapping". Or, when at first you had 3.5GB you may end up with 3GB never being able to revert it.

Thank you in advance for your responses,
Peter

The largest SFS I could get was 10, with ramdisc.

Thank you boleary.

Also looking at the not much overwehlming responses to this ... I don't think it is going to work anyway. Maybe I thought to outsmart the OS at being able to squeeze out more contiguous pages of memory than the OS normally allows for, but what happens in the end is that the OS itself will be totally unresponsive, and won't recover from that either. To me this looks like the OS normally needing the contiguous space for itself (or drivers do), and being "smart" at being ahead of that (which is what I did), doesn't help much for the overall result.
Playback itself doesn't suffer from it at all, but low and behold when you next want to do something.

Sorry for stirrs,
Peter

Thanks Peter, not sure what direction 9z4-1 is going but if 32 bit OS is inadequate for SC and SC is the preferred mode of most users, then we (32 bit OS users) will just have to figure out a way to upgrade, unless you come up with some other magic for MC that satisfies all! If that magic can't be found, it is what it is and we'll (32 bit OS users) have to deal with it.

Thank you.

I know there is another topic for it, but what is your current idea about SC vs MC at this time ?

To me the difference was not significant, but I did not spend as much time fine tuning SC as I have MC, cause SC was too cumbersome, too much rebooting, etc.

I can run at 1.2m sfs and do not need to reboot ever between play lists. It's very stable.

If I try any higher value higher a get the music glitching back a quarter of a second ever 10 seconds or so.

But this is with only 2g of RAM and playing with a 600mb ramdisk on vista 32 bit at 8x arc prediction so not uprising sfs will no go higher :-)

Nick.

Ok, I got smarter.

Vista, (edit : 32 bit) 4GB of memory ... see below.
Keeps on working forever as well.

haha

Or like this. :)

I was just able to use a SFS of 80 with SC and 185 with MC, using Vista 32 bit. Both sounded very good but don't know if they sound as good as the settings in my signature (the best sound ever for me). Am leaving for a short trip till Monday, so I can't compare W7 with Vista sound (if I listen to one more song my wife is threatening to throw my dac out the window). Did you compare your vista sound with your windows 7 sound?

I guess your wife is thinking of me all the time. :)

No, didn't compare anymore between Vista and W7. It's difficult enough within W7 alone ! (too many options in this stupid player; next version won't be allowed for anyone over 49 )

Not sure if I can get more smart than this ...

Peter hi,

Are your high sfs value with z-04 ? Or are you trying new code to get to these values ?

Nick.

Ps any improvement in sound with these high values ?

I'm sorry Nick. This is with 0.9z-4-1.

Any improvements ? haha, that is for you to decide. But as my standard text of these day is : if you don't get crazy first (from possibilities).

hey guys, Peter had an epiphany and has figured out what the system is doing in the background. The clue is in the song title(s) in the screenshots !

Or I could be wrong and need to ease off on those cryptic crossword puzzles .. haha

Cheers,

Russ (perhaps with one too many tea bags in his morning cuppa )
