Title: suggest a version of xxhighend for laptop
Post by: fzman on July 21, 2011, 03:53:26 pm
Hello all,
I just got a new laptop (my first!) and it is running win7 home premium 64 bit.  i have installed foobar using wasapi, and it sounds pretty good.  I was wondering which version of xxhighend would be recommended for an entry-level laptop 2 gig sandybridge cpu, 4 gigs ram 320 Gig hard drive, that i could use with my grado in-ears. it will not be a dedicated music-only machine, so being able to do other things while listening is relevant for me. i am completely new to win 7, so this is all new territory to this xp dinosaur!

thanks in advance for your suggestions.

best regards,

Mark

Hey Mark, I used a laptop with XX for a few years. The sound was good but it always seemed to have more hiccups and glitches than with my desktop. I'd start with the latest version and see if you can get it going. Am pretty sure you will be able to, but as long as your using a laptop, regardless of which XX version you use,  you'll have more issues than others.

so, would you suggest foobar, jriver, etc for laptop duties, which so far, sound pretty good, using my HIFIMan 801 as a usb dac, with an audioquest carbon usb cable?

Hi Mark,

Apart from the next version (0.9z-6) most probably being far more "capable", it depends a lot on how bloated the laptop is.
Funnily enough a laptop is not something we tend to "unbloat", but as part of the process I did so a few days back with the one I have here. Amazing what can be achieved. I didn't try XXHighEnd with it yet because of a few lacks of time, but I will soon.

But, I suppose you tried it ? Or ?

Regards,
Peter

Hi Mark,

I am using a laptop  with a dual core 1.6GHZ CPU and 4GB of ram. I am a minimalist, I got rid of a lot of unwanted software that were starting with windows.

The results are impeccable, but of course a desktop should be better as it generally accommodate for more powerful CPUs and more ram. But it certainly will work :-)
