Title: Hmm.. XXHighend and new Playback Design USB-X
Post by: Suteetat on August 14, 2011, 07:32:51 am
I just got the new Playback Designs USB-X connector for my Playback MPS-5.
After installing driver for it, it shows up under sound video and game controller as AKDesign USB Audio.
Unfortunately XXHigned does not see it :(
No problem with XXHighend and PD old USB port.
What a bummer, any idea what I could do?
All it says for requirement for USB-X is win7 with ASIO compatible player software.
I guess XXHighend is not exactly an Asio player anyhow!

That sure is a bummer Suteetat.
I have been Googling for it, but after detailing down sufficiently, all I get is your own posting about this. Now what ...

What you need is something which goes from ASIO to WDM. Is is dicussed here (as an example) : http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=7057
And to some extend it seems possible : http://mitov.newsgrouphosting.com/mitov.products.audiolab.net/42/ASIO-to-WDM.html

So the idea is :
XX outputs WDM (which is Kernel Streaming or WASAPI), and now something makes ASIO of that.
This looks like ASIO4ALL, but it is the other way around.

Quite unimportant, but maybe helpful might you want to have a reason for returning the unit :
a. ASIO is far from the best for best SQ;
b. ASIO is a cheapish way of enabling highspeed USB (the 480 rate). Developing WDM drivers for it is almost undoable ($$$).

Or use Foobar or something. :)

If you find a solution, please let me know. If I can do something to help, also let me know (as long as it's not developing an ASIO interface :)).

Hi Peter, thanks for your comment. I think I will keep the unit regardless as for now, it will support DSD streaming as well as 24/352 with Playback MPS-5. Something that Weiss won't support with xxHighend anyhow.
I tried it with J River Music which is pretty nice and does sound better than Weiss INT202 using the same software. I will wait awhile and test it against XXHighend/Weiss INT202 and see what happens. Worse comes to worse, I will use both depending on what I am listening to, heh heh...

Of course I am very afraid that if  new version of Phasure NOS outperform Playback then I am in deep trouble as my preamp input is limited to 3 which are already filled up (2 phono pres and Playback). I don't have extra input for Phasure and keep Playback at the same time for SACD playback :(

You said something about those inputs before ... let me think ... (because it is hard to judge the real merits of this)
