Title: Why NOS1 is Blue
Post by: Scroobius on October 10, 2011, 06:26:48 pm

Now I know why Peter went for blue as the first option colour for NOS1 !! so that they would colour key with my new hemp speaker cones - perfect clearly this was the plan all along !!!

 :goodjob:

Paul, now that you've got the aesthetics right, I reckon it's time for me to come over to have a look... oh and to hear how it sounds also, of course.

Will PM you with possible dates. If there's somewhere safe for me to park, I might drive down in my 'weekend' car, which happens to be pretty close to the colour of the blue NOS1 too.

Mani.

EDIT: I just couldn't resist attaching a small pic of my pride and joy

Hey Mani - the car looks great but I can't help noticing that it is blue and your NOS1's are white!!!!

Lots of changes to my system and at last I think that it is sorted sufficiently for your critical eye and of course hearing.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Oh by the way the car should be OK - mostly wheels stay on cars parked outside .

Paul,

I cannot believe those hemp cones are such a good match, you sure you have not been using photoshop  ;)

Mani,

That's one serious weekend car and looks great in blue. Seems there are a few car enthusiasts around the forum  :)

Paul, do your new cones have a break-in period that we should avoid?

Juan, you're right - beautiful blue sea and white sand ;-)

Mani.

Mani - break in period yes but that is mostly done now and took much breaking in. They spent many hours facing each other with one speaker connected out of phase. A real pain breaking in speakers and hemp cones seem to particularly need breaking in.

My NOS1 mimics Mc's "blue eyes".

Ehm, Praphan, I hope your equipment is closer to the blue sky than to the blue water at this time. The mixture with blue water doesn't seem a good thing to me, no matter the colour may match nicely ...

Ha ha Peter.....

You know me much much better. I love blue sky with clam wind especially in early morning. This weather condition gets me learn landing the Cessna 172 trainer easier.

As mentioned in my PM to you, my other "crazy" hobby is flying the airplane both in SIM and the real thing.

Water ...... no not now. Thailand is now having a flood crisis in many provinces. And the water is brown , not blue. yak,

Cheers !

Things like that can be a problem. But cheer up. You will enjoy the time much more with a girl, that likes to listen to music with you!

I'm not sure anyone wants me company to play the same song ten times (or more). This hobby is for loners

Well, once in a while...maybe

It's really interesting. The more 'balanced' my system sounds, the more time my wife and 2-year-old kid tend to spend listening to music with me.

This is especially the case when the system sounds to me a bit 'dull', as opposed to 'ultra-detailed'/'resolving'. I wonder if they pick up HF anomalies a lot better than me...

Whatever... I tend to focus most of my resources on getting the 100-300Hz region right nowadays - I really think this is where so much of the 'emotion' in music sits. And why I just can't listen to ported speakers/subs anymore.

Mani.

Ok, maybe listening to a nice album is more appropriate. My "Girl" likes the Brandenburg Concerts from Bach (phillips recording) a lot and once we listened to the whole 2 CDs twice a day. If I have nice songs I can show them to her. Like one track from "liszt - la campanella" played by yundi lee. She made my hifi system a very nice compliment after I showed her the track. She said her "brain" cannot associate the sound of the piano in the room with my speaker at all :) that was nice.

Maybe we deviate from the real subject a little, but the greatest compliment I receive once in a while is from people who really don't care about audio, but of coure do know about real life a bit. So I recall my mother in law entering the room once, expressing "but it sounds so real !".
Or the occasion a 12 year old girl from my son's school (she practicing some horn instrument) being in the room while I started playback without her knowing, and she wandering around where actually this sax was playing (looking totally confused).

Those could be more valueable measures than someone with knowledge telling me he never heard something like it before. I mean, that looks more subjective to me than the above little stories.

And let's be honest ... when we turn up the volume, what are we the most afraid of ?
Yes, that you like the music, but because it doesn't sound 100% it has to be turned down again. By someone else.

This exactly was the case. She ist not interested in the technical stuff at all. She just experienced what the little girl experienced with the "Sax". Because of that I took it as a big compliment (and I admired her well expressed thoughts). I show her the music because of the music itself. I normal don't "abuse" her for listening tests. She is abosuely not ineterested in that. But she likes to listen to my stereo :)

As we have moved onto cars check this out - I used to race this (well part of it - its a long story) many years ago. It is great fun to drive and surprises the heck out BMW and GTi drivers with its full race 1100 engine. Obviously it was sprayed blue to match NOS1.

Russ, that is quite some car. Absolutely beautiful. I think the 246 is one of the best looking cars ever made...

When I was looking around for a 'weekend' car, I wanted a classic car but, not being a spanner-head, needed something that would be easy to maintain. Now it could be argued that a 7-year old NSX is not a true classic, but I believe it will be in time. And of course, it's built like a tank and should really never go wrong, provided it's well maintained. That's the theory anyway.

If I had £150K spare, I'd buy the 246 you posted (on sale in the UK now).

Mani.

The car is realy beautifull (also the house)!

But if I had 20k€,I would buy this:
http://www.avantgarde-acoustic.de/duo-omega-hornlautsprecher-design-de.html?produkt=duoo&s=nuss-glanz&f=dblau
and maybe not with blue horns... :)

There are for sure better speakers for the money but I like the looks VERY much. And what is more important, 10 Years ago I played in a Band with a Guy working at Avantgarde Acoustics. He explained me the meaning of "high end".  And then I had my first true audiophile experience with a Trio (with Sony SCD1 and some 7W transistor amp). I never will forget how stunned I was listening to my CD's over this Monster. My own system was Visaton Vox 252  and a modified Pioneer PD-S 507 with some DIY Amp. Man was I disappointed as I got home that day....Since that day I try to build a system sounding like the Trio (a Duo omega would be good enough). I guess the SCD1 is beaten by my Transport+DAC but the rest....

Indeed !

If I ever win the lottery , both the 246GT(S) and the car below, would be the first of my long held aspirations to own.

You need have no fear of the NSX not becoming a classic in it's own right also. Some mighty fine engineering went into its development, and Honda should be justifiably proud of their achievements .... a reliable and ergonomic supercar hey ... who would have thought :)

I'm sure you have a grin from ear to ear when you take it out on that one fine Sunday morning that England serves up now and then ;) Going for a fang around Isle of Man must be idyllic.

Cheers,

Russ

 Wink

If I had the 20k, it wouldn't be a problem going to 25k. But then I definitely would need a room extension for the Trio. Or I must place a hammock between the speakers instead of having a bed :)

Hey Paul, :wtf:? How much better could your system get for God's sake?

Is this a tweak or an actual component? The only component I can imagine that would 'obviously' improve your system would be a Sauermann amp. Barring something so dramatic, you must be upgrading your crossovers. Has that Peter Qvortrup been up to his sales tricks again?

Mani.

Hey Mani - Well even though I say so myself my system is already much better than when you heard it. Some very significant tweaks have passed under the bridge since then (not least of which are the holes in the skirting boards ha ha). And your system also seems to advanced to another level. So maybe we should arrange return listening sessions again. You are always welcome to come here - as long as you bring that Honda again of course.

And what of this newcomer to my system? - well all I can say is that it will make a significant difference and that I have wanted one for at least the last 20 years. But I can also say that definitely you will not guess what it is he he. My wife is going to buy it for me tomorrow.

It will have to stay under wraps until then - watch this space

All the best

Paul

Anything to share yet Paul?

I was thinking, money no object, what one thing would I buy to enhance my listening pleasure? And you know what, once you have the best DAC and the best amp on the planet (IMHO of course... hehe) there isn't much left to want. A very, very nice sounding pair of speakers perhaps. But even then, I'm not sure which ones I'd go for. Maybe a pair of Cessaro Gamma I speakers, with matching basshorms... in cream finish to match my not-blue NOS1.

Mani.

OK Mani you are far to smart for your own shirt. Here is the new arrival - my new listening chair and obviously it had to be blue. Always wanted one of these. Good old IKEA - not sure how long it will last but anyway it is very comfortable. With the gentle rocking motion and the new super smooth USB3 sound I will have to be careful not to fall asleep.

And before anyone asks - the answer is NO that is not my normal listening position  :)

My wife did go to collect it today - but I had to take her  :(

And by the way I currently listening to Joni Mitchell - have you guessed the album yes absolutely it is "Blue" what else.

Oh and by the way the "general" listening easy chairs are at the far end of the room for "broad brush" stereo effect with an audience of two or more - guess what colour they are - yes you have got it ................

Hi Mani,

If you are seriously considering changing your speakers, take a look at the Ascendo MS SE. Extremely musical, neutral & very easy on the ears. Maybe Mr Scheuring will throw in the colour you desire.

Here is the new arrival - my new listening chair and obviously it had to be blue.

Hey Paul, very nice indeed. So in a normal seated position, do your ears sit above the headrest of the chair or below? I suppose this'll have a major effect on the 'sound of the chair'.

Totally, totally :offtopic:

Lately, I've really lost interest in following up on the likes of 'computeraudiophile.com'. It seems to me that the real leading edge of computer audio is right here on phasure.com...

Well maybe that matters too.

Some guys arereally serious about -ikea- chairs, looks like you bought the right one ;):

Quote

Immediately I tossed the chair out of the room and went and got the most comfortable, least intrusive chair I could find. Which turned out to be a folding camping chair. Fired up the system with something I have played a lot lately and wow!!! Another big change, things opened up quite considerably in the soundstage!!!!!! So thank you Michael for helping me see that!!!

So if you want to do a major upgrade your system, I can sell you these deluxe listening chairs cheap (see picture this thread)!!

Earlier in the evening, I put the cd case in the closet and moved the speakers forward about 6 which helped the soundstage considerably but not as much as my turbo-charged, competition, full race listening chair! Its amazing what you hear when you arent blocking the sound, imagine that!!!!
