Title: HDCD on/off changes the sound on z0.9-6-1?
Post by: juanpmar on October 13, 2011, 08:42:28 pm
With z0.9-6-1 I notice a difference in sound when HDCD is activated vs when it is not. I´m talking about music that was not originally HDCD, about music recorded with HDCD I don´t know yet.
When HDCD is activated I find a bigger soundstage and the bass is deeper and tighter.
I know we talked about it sometime before but now it seems to me quite evident. Is it possible that the sound of the no HDCD records could be affected just because the HDCD is on?

Peter, the volume with unattended works fine now, although Alt + D occasionally fails.

Still some tics in between tracks

Btw, I confirm the excellence of boleary´s settings

Juan - I don't see how this ever can make a difference. The only thing I can imagine is that
a. you don't know about it (in occasions) being HDCD encoded;
b. There's a bug in the program in the mean time, and it does not decode HDCD at all (while now another means of FLAC conversion took place).

But this is very far sought ... Too far. :)

When the music reproduced is HDCD there´s a volume change in playback, so that's easy to detect, also if it is HDCD the logo appears while charging it.

I had the feeling that the soundstage was bigger with different discs that were not HDCD. I don´t know, maybe it was a false impression, I'll look more closely

By my point was : it is all a kinf of super complex to let it go right with all the "cacheing" and possible other conversions. Maybe you recall how many times I had it wrong in the software. I think it now works okay, but I wouldn't bet much on it.

It hope it is not too confusing. I am only trying to find out whether something really could be wrong.

Maybe it is already difficult to determine what we are actually talking about, like the HDCD encoded album already lacking one (least significant) bit for normal audio (not HDCD DEcoded) to begin with. This may imply that you are always correct to begin with ...
But then you were talking about not-ENcoded albums. How can *there* be a difference ... (a question for you, but "knowledge" to me because nothing should extra-happen with it).
