Title: Alternative to anti-virus
Post by: ivo on February 08, 2012, 11:28:46 am
Hi,

Some time ago I uninstalled antivirus software as it cannot be stopped by XX in "stopping services" mode and because it has bad impact on SQ.
After a while living w/o this SW, I start seeing various fake sites jumping around my PC, so:

Is there another SW that can help and which is stoppable easily by XX when chosen to stop services?

Why not stop it yourself right before going into Minimize OS mode ?

You may even be able to reactivate it just before going back to normal ?

Well, I was using Avira. It was not possible to stop it. Only uninstall.

But isn't this the problem also for XX. I mean, we exclude antivirus from stopping list because it just cannot be???

Not necessarily;

When I were a virus creator, the first I would do is kill the virus from within my program code. So, this is the first anti virus software should not allow.

Whether this comes down to only let not run the anti virus software by uninstalling it ...
Maybe.

Hi,

Yesterday tried few antiviruses, namely "Microsoft Security Essentials" and "Panda Cloud Antivirus". Both are free.

At the end, decided to stay with Panda as it is possible to stop it easily, however, one process must be added to "non-stoppable" in XX. Liked this approach because no updates are needed, all is somewhere there and it is pretty light and it turns OFF automatically once there is no network available (exactly how I listen to music).

Ms Essentials seemed to be harder to stop as well as it activates on behalf of itself Windows update feature and leaves it ON!!! I do not want that.

OK, just wanted to let know at least one XX compatible AV.

What are you others using?

Hi Ivo,

As you can see in my profile I use two partitions in the hdd (WD Velociraptor) where XXHighEnd resides. In one partition (C:) I only have the OS W7 Ultimate 64bits SP1 (no updates) and XXHighEnd. In the other partition (D:) I have again the OS W7 Ultimate 64bits SP1 (no updates) plus the ripping programs: dbpweramp and EAC. I use this (D:) partition to connect to internet via cable to use AccurateRip. When Iīm listening music I even disconnect the internet cable. I donīt use antivirus at all because I donīt use this computer to navigate in Internet. I always think on this computer as it is just a transport to be connected to the Phasure NOS1 USB dac, not as a computer to be used in other things.

Maybe it is a purist approach but if we are trying to get the best possible sound we should take care with the minimal details.
In your case if you also make two partitions in your hdd you could avoid the use of an antivirus in one of those partitions and could have only the OS and XXHE in it.

Best regards,
Juan
