Title: Due Remote features : URGENT QUESTION to all !
Post by: PeterSt on May 26, 2012, 09:43:40 pm
It is all about this : XXHighEnd Remote Control (http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=1967.msg20158#msg20158).
... So, controlling XXHighEnd with any tablet (iPad, Android based, more ?) ...

From that topic :

Quote
Apart from the controlling device(s), there's a little bit of hardware to obtain (and you for sure won't have it). Cost : approx. 35 euros maximum.

Important : This is about one and one thing only : Using that Tablet (no cable connecteted to it of course) to control XXHighEnd by all means possible, without any LAN active in the audio PC, and for sure no WiFi.
So, the bold text. That's what it is about.

The subject are two Bluetooth dongles, which I estimated to be "35 euros maximum" ... which was at the time I found them, thought they were expensive for the 49.xx euros I bought them for (including tax and shipping to only a neighbour country), and had the idea to look further later (for you), so everybody could get them from wherever they were cheap.

Was I wrong ...

A little background in between : It took me some 4 months to configure of what I thought was possible. Nothing on the net but half-solutions, and nothing for the job I wanted : networking per official means, without network. Only when I obtained the proper Bluetooth devices I had learned the sheer endless possibilities of Bluetooth, and what all is NOT supported by all the devices in the world (like your laptop), except for the one(s) I could find after learning a lot about it.
Fine.

Now, with the chips being down, I wanted to point you at that nicely low priced supplier etc., and you know what ? I can't even find one single other supplier than where I bought them from. I can't even find a distribitor who carries them except for the main office in Germany which only sells to German companies. Completely crazy.
So ... it took me 50 telephone calls to get the Dutch distributor of the brand to go as far as especially carrying the device for me, so I can buy them by quantities and next supply them to you.
And would I not have arranged for that, then I would have worked all this bloody time on a "product" which can not work because the hardware is not available to you.
:smirk:

But the problem is not over yet ...
What I can do is buy 100 (or more) and obtain something like an acceptable price which allows for world wide shipping as well, and gives me the idea that it will not be so that someone is writing addresses on enveloppes for 0 euro while you still pay that high price. Now :

Outside the European Community :
For 43 euros two of these devices (you really need two) are shipped world wide and this includes import duties on your side (if all is right). Shipping throughput time should be 4-5 days to the other side of the world.

Inside the European Community 19% VAT has to be added, which makes it 50 euros rounded down (a tad too much I say).
When you are a company outside of The Netherlands this VAT does not apply, but you need to give your VAT number.

I could say that for most this makes it 5 to 20++ euros cheaper depending on where you are, but it merely is about that you may not be able to get it anyway otherwise. I had to move heaven and earth (Dutch speaking) to get them by the 100 ...

But now the major point : will I be buying 100 of them and ship out 10 only, or will it be something like an efficient operation ? So it is clear ... I need 50 customers at least to let this go. As long as they are not there, no super-duper remote control will be there also ...

When you are interested, please leave a small note to this topic; we will be able to see ourselves how far we will be able to get with this.

Thanks all in advance !
Regards,
Peter

Edit :
PS: What I didn't make clear much, is that we must see this as a one-time operation. So, when I will purchase, this can happen one time only per the 100 (or more). This means that when you rather sit back and awaiten how things turn out, you will have nothing *or* have to wait for 50 others to have ordered which could take months.

I would purchase the devices but what device can I use as the remote? I refuse to buy any Apple devices. I do own a Blackberry phone but its getting old. Would I have to buy an android device whatever that is?

Or to make your issue bigger can you supply a remote device?

Is there a cheap remote device that would do the job?

Hi all !

So, we are going strong, but just not strong enough. On that matter, I just added this text to the original post :

What I didn't make clear much, is that we must see this as a one-time operation. So, when I will purchase, this can happen one time only per the 100 (or more). This means that when you rather sit back and awaiten how things turn out, you will have nothing *or* have to wait for 50 others to have ordered which could take months.

This looks a bit threatening but isn't intended to be so; It's only that I realized that when the moving mass is critical(ly low) I just can not order that other 100 when you later decide to have a go for it after all. I know, this looks wrongish on my side (I should have stock, so to speak), but I guess this is how it turns out. So the only thing you can do - when in doubt for an order - is order anyway. Otherwise you will have nothing.

One other thing worth mentioning :
I should order today soon for delivery next Tuesday (to me). Otherwise it will be a week later. It seems best to sit out that week anyway on the behalf of those who didn't find this topic yet (and next the above applies, which doesn't seem much fair).

Regards,
Peter

... So, controlling XXHighEnd with any tablet (iPad, Android based, more ?) ...The subject are two Bluetooth dongles...

A question for better understanding of use:
Where do you plug these 2 dongles? Are they of USB format and both of them to be plugged into to music PC?
-So we get wireless Bluetooth interface with a tablet/smartphone/laptop (with bluetooth capabilities, of course)?

If so, I guess the music PC has to be in same room as the tablet, then (distance limited to the capability of the Bluetooth format of course)?

That bloke from down under has been thinking about getting an additional set so he has spares in case one dongle stop working years from now and they are no longer readily available. Seems like a good idea, so please update your list for him to reflect two (2) pairs needed, ie. 4 dongles in total.

Cheers,

Russ (ICFTLDU)

Just to make extra sure we have enough orders and to also allow me a backup pair of dongles in the event that bad stuff happens to the first pair, you can put me down for 2 pairs also. I assume that once the one time order is placed the dongles will become thereafter quite rare and essentially made of "unobtainium."

Hi Peter,

For some of the non technical member, like me, could you pls post a note on how to connect, use these dongles?

Arvind

PS : If there is a reasonable possibility of these dongles failing, then pls put me in for 2 pairs.

Title: THANKS - So let's go
Post by: PeterSt on June 03, 2012, 09:20:05 am
Arvind, No, not only for less technical people, but for everybody there's an extensive guide how to set this up. I just spent 1,5 day on it and about half is ready now. It will be very easy, if you only don't have to invent all the wheels like I had to.

Pedal, it will be clear soon how to use it, although I should ban the word "soon" from my vocabulary. I just don't see how to ever finish all the descriptions and outlays which suddenly are needed (with 0.9z-7). When one thing is set, another comes around, like the Android quite unexpected thing from yesterday (see other topic). All can be sorted out, but the time needed is huge.

All, thanks a lot for accomplishing the 100 dongles needed to get this going. Really great of you all. Today will be the last day to order, and I really wouldn't order an extra pair in case things brake. Or at least it shouldn't. Mine are in continuous use since February I think, and they work flawlessly. They should regarding the price (you can have Bluetooth dongles  for less than 5 euros I think). Anyway, the order will go out tomorrow, and delivery to me will be one week after that. Shipment to you starts right away then. And next let's see what's first; your dongles or 0.9z-7.

General

I hope it is clear that I want this to be a somewhat efficient operation. I mean, when not careful, it takes as much (administrative etc.) time to ship out 50 NOS1's as preparing 50 of these shipments. What I like you to do is this :

Send an email to phasure .com (sales at) where the title contains litterally this text :

Bluetooth dongle - 3 sets - Eric

Obviously the 3 (sets) is to be replaced with what you want, and the "Eric" here is your nick name from the forum.

In that email type your address details so, that we can copy paste it into something printable, while that will be sticked on the envelope. Don't forget your country. Telephone number not needed.
Payment details will follow in a reply to that email (and for many Paypal will be the cheapest means for this low amount).
Don't use this email title to ask other questions please; we want to keep it clean.

Thanks

Let me explicitly thank you for making this possible, which is not only on behalf of you yourselves, but also because I spent this crazy time on getting it to work while at some stage I saw that it wouldn't go otherwise than with the devices I finally found. So for example, my new Android tablet (bluetooth enabled) really doesn't do the job with its Bluetooth support. I can easily tell within 10 seconds now, because I now know what this is all about. This was different with the iPad of which I thought at first that somewhere, somehow it should be possible. But it can't. Laptops here neither, UMPCs not, nothing. With these dongles, yes. You will see ...

Regards,
Peter

No worries. I didn't yet indeed.

When I responded to all (with payment details) I will let it know here. Then you will automatically see whether something went wrong (and nothing won't go wrong in the end).

Hi all,

You won't be able to do a thing with them right now. It first needs 0.9z-7 (don't ask) and the by itself ready instructions.
Also, whatever you attempt with them now without instructions, may need uninstalling things which are not in the instructions because you did/implied that yourself (plugging them in is sufficient for that ). Not a real big deal, but it is better to have the guidance match your experience (was that English ?).

Regards,
Peter

WoW ! How Fast !  ;)

I hope my homing platypus makes it back in time for 0.9-7's release. He packed some extra vegemite sandwiches in his pouch so he should have the stamina for the Indian Ocean crossing  :thankyou:

Peter- now that I have the dongles... I plan to use my iPad for remote control once new XX is released.  Should I go out and order a Camera Connection Kit for one of the dongles, or will the iPad work just via its native BlueTooth?

Thanks!
Tim

Guys/Peter

I'm sorry if this has been covered.  Peter, you asked me if I wanted the dongles, but I told you I don't see a need for a remote... but is this more than that??  Is there SQ to be considered here?  If so, send me the dongles heheh... or I'll wait and let the choir chime in first.

Dave,

It is SQ related only when you want to use that remote. So, currently that would need the LAN to be on, while the dongles allow to do it without that.

Now the other way around :
You don't want to use a remote; can SQ be improved with the dongles ? I think it can ! ... if you only use that remote. So, what would happen is that you use another PC for controlling XXHighEnd, the audio PC left alone for monitor, mouse and keyboard operation. And now it sounds better.
but
Indeed let's wait for others to chime their bells whether this is really true. I don't want to sell useless things.

Hi Tim,

While a camera connection kit can be the most useful in general (was't that providing USB connections ?) it is not necessary at all. But we must be careful here, because it is mighty complicated;
First off the bluetooth of a non-3G model can't be used at all for our purpose. Maybe, very maybe someone who is more smart than I am can get it done (because bluetooth *is* in there), but I really don't think so (I tried hard, but gave up). With a 3G model it *still* is questionable whether it may do what we want (I don't own a 3G model) and chances are very small (say 3 %). For example, my Android (3G) won't do it.

Huh ?

You won't be using Bluetooth from the tablet ...
:wacko::wacko::wacko:
haha

Something else is needed (:secret:) of which it is assumed you will have it. Later you will understand why.

OK .. so from the above, can I assume we won't be using the Bluetooth function on our tablets?

If that is the case can I assume then that WiFi will be used from the tablet to communicate with another PC/Laptop using RDP, and that in turn has one of the dongles installed, and the latter then communicates to the music server (which has the second dongle installed)?

Cheers,

Russ ( slightly baffled )

Is that a good or a bad sign ? (meaning : this needs a 100% proper interpretation of "baffled" which is hard for me)

Edit : Depending on your response I may change may answer (to come) haha

hehe ... meaning that all along the discussions of this remote control, using a Bluetooth device, there was always an assumption ( on my part at least ) that the tablet/phone would be using bluetooth for it's communication. I don't have an issue if an intermediate device is needed (laptop/PC), which I guess in hindsight was the other piece in the puzzle that you thought everyone would have.

Now, when I say I am "slightly baffled", it simply means I don't have all the answers to form the right answer.

per one dictionary meaning:
"Adj.   1.   baffled - perplexed by many conflicting situations or statements"

Cheers,

Russ ( almost enlightened ;) )

Haha. Well, my "problem" is that I (sadly) had a slightly different text in my earlier post from today and most probably you have read that. Or at least you can have, and it spoils my fun a bit. But let's put it like this :

Bluetooth is such a huge subject that not even driver "manufacturers" know what to do with it, or what could be useful to implement. And, as far as I have seen, all the Android stuff is based on the same driver, and it can't do what it should do foremost (never mind for now what). Now, supposed you are a bit at home in this Android area, maybe you can find means to replace the standard driver ? if you think means/other drivers exist, don't hesitate to list them all. It is just a matter of trying (which I can and will do). Necessary it is not but it would be more nice or more smart. More exciting. The "RDC software" for what it needs exists.

Don't feel obligated !
Peter

PS: Any idea what the speed of Bluetooth is in your tablet ?

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 has a CSR8811 Bluetooth chip onboard, and according to CSR's site it  "offers Bluetooth v3.0 and support for Bluetooth v4.0 with IEEE 802.11 coexistence along with Wideband Speech".

According to wikipedia:

Bluetooth Version 3.0 + HS of the Bluetooth Core Specification was adopted by the Bluetooth SIG on April 21, 2009. Bluetooth 3.0+HS provides theoretical data transfer speeds of up to 24 Mbit/s, though not over the Bluetooth link itself. Instead, the Bluetooth link is used for negotiation and establishment, and the high data rate traffic is carried over a collocated 802.11 link.

The Bluetooth SIG completed the Bluetooth Core Specification version 4.0, which includes Classic Bluetooth, Bluetooth high speed and Bluetooth low energy protocols. Bluetooth high speed is based on Wi-Fi, and Classic Bluetooth consists of legacy Bluetooth protocols. This version has been adopted as of June 30, 2010.

Bluetooth is intrinsically slower that WiFi, and I presume the majority of the data transmission between the dongles will be screen refresh information. As long as it can keep up with that requirement everything should be fine, as your testing is proving.

Replacing drivers on a Android device isn't quite as straight forward, as say, on a PC, I understand. Because the hardware is static, all drivers etc. get incorporated in either the Kernel or System ROM's, and customising those is something I can't imagine most users would want to delve into.

Cheers,

Russ (awaiting the arrival of his homing platypus)

Percy, my pet platypus, delivered my dongles today, and the nerd in me had to find out about then, so after a bit of investigation, figured out the manufacturer of the chipset and the model. I can post a link to the chipset page if Peter gives the OK, but he may prefer it to be kept  :secret: .

Suffice to say that the dongle uses a very good chipset design and should perform well over a good distance.

Looking forward to putting them into action :)

Cheers,

Russ

G'day there Russ,

Oh, I know all about the chipset and manufacturer and everything, so it is not about that. It is about the Android side. So, I know little about that, and a brief investigation brought me no further than what you just told me. So, nothing much to do there I guess, and then Android supports a few functions only (and not the one I want). And notice, since this is largely about the chipset itself, possibly the chipset in any tablet won't allow for it anyway. Or one (brand/type) does and the other does not. Like the laptops I tried (and where I can install any driver all right); they don't do the job neither.
But it's okay; it will work by the means I have set it up.

Thanks a lot for your time,
Peter

Hi all,

By now I like to know who did not receive his dongles yet. And for those who respond with "me not !" please say so in here when you did after all.

No worries for anyone who did not receive anything yet. Max I ever encountered to the other side of the world by normal mail was 5 weeks. Of course for 2 weeks I then thought that the letter was lost. But nothing got lost so far ever in my situation.

Thanks,
Peter
