Title: Don't be shocked ...
Post by: PeterSt on July 17, 2012, 09:32:05 am
... but I like to try some forum (visuals) changes. Okay, you *will* be shocked, I'm sure. But now you know about it.

What I'm applying can't be done in one go, so it needs a few rounds of adjustments before it is final. And when it's final I may set it back.

If all is right, things show as I intend at least from the Chrome Browser. Nothing will change to IE under v10 and the other browsers I can't check t this time but they should work as intended as well. Tablets may need additional attention.
I think I will be applying it to Chrome-only first. When I'm done with "something" I will post about it in here, so you all can start shouting and complaining.

Be prepared to see nothing ... haha
Peter

Hi Peter,
Is this the right moment just before the release of version 7 of XXHE?
Regards, Johan

Hahaha ... you are concerned eh ?
Let's say it is related and "almost necessary". But as you may know, I split my working life in two physical locations. One is the XX development site and the other is not that. But there I can still do these things ...

Hey, I hope you are not posting from your work location ?

:) :)

It's ugly Peter. I can't stand it.

... Oh, you haven't changed it yet? Sorry.

Mani.

The forum is stone age. Can't even mix photos inbetween the text.

An update is welcome.

Change it to a good old BBS (Bulletin Board System) and save heaps of bandwidth. Nobody needs all these fancy fandangled GUI's to communicate. If you want to liven it up a little you can always create some stunning ANSI art to embed

Cheers,

Russ ( :old: )

Like a few other things, this comes a bit late as well;

Expect all to look different within the hour.

Note :
Those with IE9 or older IE versions will look at very BLUE screens;
Those with IE10 and up, Opera, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, will look at very ORANGE screens.

It is imaginable that you use a browser where it all doesn't work out, or that you just don't like it otherwise. In that case go to your Profile (see "Profile" at the top) and after that choose "Look and Layout Preferences" as you see in the lower left corner in the first picture below; The screen that follows (which actually is that first picture) allows you to change (back) the general forum layout. See at the mouse pointer.
The second picture shows the Phasure "Theme" at the mouse pointer, which is the merely YELLOW one you are used to. Notice that the Phasure2 Theme you see at the bottom is the new Theme which is default now; you can always switch between the both.

Lastly, the new Theme is really advised for Tablets.

When you don't see a change within 20 minutes after this post, use ctrl-F5 in your PC/Mac browser and for Tablets/Phones go to (Browser) settings in there and choose Clear Cache.

Hope you like it.
Peter

IE9 on my work PC and the standard template comes out blue. Not unpleasant, but not really to my liking. I can't get the orange...

Mani.

EDIT: Which of course exactly how you described it would look on IE9!!!

This forum is the ancient SMF version 1.1, a freeware downloadable here: http://www.simplemachines.org/

The 1.1 version is several years old. The current version is 2.0.2.
According to the SMF forum upgrade/conversion from 1.1 to 2.0.2 is easy.
I recommend Peter to do this upgrade. I have good experience with the SMF 2.0 from other forum.

Also, SMF v2.0 makes it easier to put photos within the text in a post. If so, I guess more members would post photos and album covers.

----------

Any thing else? Oh, yes; This new color scheme is ugly as hell. Also, it is more difficult to read a text in light color on dark background. Dark ink on light background is better to the eye. Source&Hints here: http://uxmovement.com/content/when-to-use-white-text-on-a-dark-background/

----------

But heeeeey! - who am I to complain? As long as the sound is this good and Peter is such a nice gentleman, he could write the forum in Chinese and I would not complain about it! (Eventually he must come to Norway once in a while and explain to me what I have missed from the forum).

....and forced to use only my PC to check the forum because I can't change the look on my tablet to something I like and the same as on my PC.

Then better use what I was used to see...

Life just become more easy this way.

Bert

Hey Peter,

I think that the contrast is very high. This design points out to every little graphics mistake when icons or bitmaps (avatars, xxhighend top right and on the left) are placed on the background - little spikes at the edges for example.

The icons should be bright on dark background and vice versa.

If using the reply editor the text below the edit window is not readable easily. The background is to bright on the left side of the text area.

I don't say anything to the colors - it's a matter of taste. But I like to take photos with black and white films  :)

Georg

My eyeballs are only now just starting to recovery .. haha.

I quickly reverted back to the original (Phasure) scheme. Interestingly enough, only 9 others so far have done that. One side effect of the new default colour scheme is that I have to logon now each time I want to quickly check the latest posts, or else I need to reach for my sunglasses ;)

I'm sure that most realise the Dutch national colour is ORANGE, but sadly for me, it's a little too overwhelming when used currently. Perhaps Green & Gold might work better  :naughty:

Cheers,

Russ

Do you mean now you have reverted to the old "yellow" ? So, once there you need to re-login every time ?

I've gone back to original yellow just find it easier to read as I slowly go blind at 57, old age setting in. No problems logging in automatically on all colours.

Yep .. back to the old yellow scheme which is easy on the eye. Technically I don't have to re-login in each time provided I don't logout before closing down the browser, but I have got in the habit over the years of accessing all forums as a guest unless I want to add a post. No biggie for this forum though .. I'll try and remember not to logout on the PC's in the house and on my phone and tablet.

Cheers,

Russ

Ah, okay, now I get it. So yes, when you are not logged in you are directed to the "sun glasses" default. Yea, well …

Thanks,
Peter
