Title: Very Surprised
Post by: Scroobius on August 18, 2012, 11:04:46 am
Hi All,

I just thought I would let you know that I have just finished reloading my O/S. I had had a couple of problems the first was that XX would after say half an hour stop mid track. The second problem was that I had had problems with WASAPI would not turn off when on minimised (that had happened for some time) and then recently the o/s would not minimise at all.

So having run out of ideas I reloaded the o/s full clean install of W7 then fully updated.

Wow what a difference!!. Not only does everything seem to be working properly but the sound quality has improved substantially. The bass particularly is transformed (and I thought it was good before). It has real speed and snap easy natural depth. Now when I listen I can feel the chair move / vibrate with the music much more noticeable than before. Something fundamental must have been wrong in the O/S I cannot begin to think what. Anyway now everything is working correctly I have imaged the disc so maybe from time to time I will just reload the image.

And I cannot even listen to PA just yet until I get my blocking caps. Mouthwatering to think what it will sound like with PA because now it sounds just great.

Paul

PS - I have been thinking more about this and I have to think that this improvement in bass performance is more to do with the balanced power supply installed last weekend. To prove the point I am going to try normal house supply later to check the difference again. Maybe the o/s problem was hiding the improvement in some way.

Congratulations Paul, once you can use PA I´m sure you´ll be surprised about the new sound.

If I understand you well you reloaded the OS and then you updated it, with all the upates?. So far I´m using the OS without updates and the sound is terrific...

Best regards, Juan

Hi Juan - back in the day I used Windows 7 vanilla. I thought it sounded OK at the time and ran it like that for some time. However I eventually did apply updates and it led to a significant improvement in the SQ specifically the updates removed an edginess to the sound others I think have had the same experience.

Thanks Paul,
Probably I've been behind on this issue. So you applied all the updates or just some of them?

Juan

HI all ,

did a fresh reinstall of the OS and been able of doing the SP1 update from file , without even connecting to the internet.
So all is turned off on that side .

One thing is easy to say : the sound is quite another story from the beginning . Update or not update . That is the question . I would not even connect to the internet the new OS .

And Now , back with the activation story . Red Borders , Off button missing .

Of course nobody is behind with anything;
Anyone who lets all the MS updates flow is 100% guaranteed by me personally that he *will* run into troubles and  that he will have no way to go to.
Did I say Period ?

Peter

PS: Which is something else than applying particular updates which are known for the better (I don't know of any, but they may exist).
Haha.

Ok Peter, that sounds pretty clear.

Well, the door open again... :scratching:

Peter is of course right about updates however this time I was reckless and feckless and updated fully up to date. I must be lucky W7 on my system has never sounded better.

Of course there was obviously a problem with my system before that is now fixed by reinstalling W7.

And so will I now just accept every new update that comes along? not bloomin' likely I will stick with what I have now.

I wouldn't do that Paul. Of course you can hope that some day, some time you receive an update which improves your sound. But I wouldn't count on it. And the whole point is, when it goes the other way around (poorer SQ) you won't notice until it is too late to know where it came from.

Peter
