Title: SP1 - is it necessary?
Post by: SeVeReD on September 02, 2012, 08:00:03 pm
Should I install SP1 on top of my new install of Win 7 pro?  Is it necessary?  Is there better sound quality with or without SP1?  Do we even know the answer to this question.  I believe Russ runs without SP1.  ATM I think I'm going to just do an install of Win 7 pro and do no updates?  OK?  Remember, only XXHE program will be on this HDD/essentially computer. Another HDD will cover PlayBack drive and later an SSD for galleries will be introduced.

Gracias,
dave

Hi,

You can read the "plane vanilla" threads about win7 and sp1. Finally sp1 won, that is for 09-6-1c. I guess nobody compared for the latest version of xx.

You can make a windows restore point before upgrading and go back after if you don't like it.

Hi Coen,

Unless I am totally out of line, when someone updates to SP1, the prior restore points disappear... At least this is what has happened to me after going up to SP1...

Just in case...

Regards,

Alain

PS: Maybe this happened to me because I downloaded the SP1 pack ? I can't say, but it really erased all my previous restore points...

Thanks

Should have known there would have been ink spilled already about SP1.  Still Russ, would like to hear from you.  Still at vanilla and happy?  May try it first just vanilla and later do an sp1 upgrade.

I'm "as happy as a pig in poo" at the moment Dave, even without PA being workable for me currently, due, I expect, to my all digital path to the pre-processor.

I never got around to trying SP1 when it was released, and I generally go along with the "if it aint broke ... don't fix it" philosophy. Having said that, I should set some time aside one of these days to try it. I will use Acronis True Image to take a system wide snapshot beforehand though so I can easily restore if all goes pear shaped. I've never been 100% comfortable with Windows "restore point" feature, hence my desire for something like True Image.

Cheers,

Russ

You may be very well right. Some updates aren't restorable/removable either. The route of the disk image or a new sp1 install on a new disk (or partition?) sounds more like the way to go if you like to go back without much trouble.

It seems a kind of logic to me that those old Restore Points will be removed. BUT, the upgrade to SP1 will make one herself. So this is how you always can go back (takes 15 minutes or so).

Many did it like this in the past, including me several times (back and forth).

Oh, W7 without SP1 really is not "it". But it will bring you more bass. Less refined and for sure more rough highs, but it *does* bring more bass ...

Aaaarg I should have known better... Of course it's true that SP1 will create a restore point. My apologies... I have been fooled by the fact that it identifies the restore point with something like "SP1" (don't have the correct title), but it could write insted "Pre SP1" or something alike... Well...

Alain

I don't think it will mention the "Pre ..." etc.; with updates of drivers which incur for it; it will just mention the install of that component. That's it. So, you'd have to know that the Restore Point is always taken from *before* the whatever install ...
