Title: Phase Alignment : That first tick/crack - Solution
Post by: PeterSt on September 09, 2012, 05:33:47 pm
As I have said earlier, I could incur for that louder tick or crack on other PCs myself (after clicking Play). But today I could clearly see that this is related to the WallPaper Coverart.

In a far past it also happened that the WallPaper caused problems regarding ticks, and IIRC this was when W7 came about first. No Phase Alignment there of course, but the problem then was more severe, hence needed a solution which just works for years by now. And PA only needs a small gap in the playback stream to cause a tick/crack happening.

In the situation I tested today I used the standard MS drivers for the soundcard in there. And, installing the official drivers for it immediately cured the problem.

So, from another topic regarding the tick/crack we already knew "upgrade your drivers !", but possibly upgrading your video driver is enough.

Anyway, notice that showing/changing the WallPaper receives the highest priority by the OS. This is how the playback stream can stall so easily. This does not involve "screen activity" only, but also fast/"severe" Registry changes.

Hope this helps someone.

I only have the loud 'crack' when I stop play! Are you saying that by updating the sound card driver this may solve the crack I am experiencing?

Hi Sam,

No, that is not related. That should be solved by 0.9z-7-3.
