Title: Win8 & Renesas Driver/Firmware
Post by: boleary on January 30, 2013, 02:43:18 pm
For those using W8 and the Renesas driver for USB3, are you using the latest driver and Firmware? Heres a link to the drivers: http://www.station-drivers.com/page/renesas.htm

What´s exactly the driver and firmware you´re using?. Is there any difference in SQ with the previous ones?

Thanks,
Juan

Hi Juan, I've been using driver: 2.1.36.0 and firmware:4.0.1.5.0.2 with power management turned off in the Renesas "program". SQ has been quite awesome here, but I never really compared versions. I used these versions on Nick's advice some time ago. Today, I've used the more recent versions for my W8 install (Just got XX going five minutes ago) and am wondering if anyone used other drivers or did any comparing. The latest driver  is for W8 so I think it has to be used but am really not sure.

I´m installing XX in W8 rigth now so I´m still using the old Renesas USB 3.0 Driver (2.0.34.0) which was working fine. So far I only played a couple of songs and the best I can say is that there is sound and that it seems quite good. I´ll try the new drivers later and let you know.

Regards,
Juan

Hey Brian, Nick or others using W8. Could you tell me please if you´re using the same Bios settings and also in the Device Manager you were using in W7, I mean the ones suggested by Nick?.

Brian, I don´t remember any word about the Renesas "program" you are talking about, just that I installed the driver, would you please remind me about it?

Juan

Juan, assuming you installed the W7 shell, when you click on the start button "Renesas Electronics" should appear in your program list. This is the same for W7 too. Did you install the firmware too? Also my BIOS settings and Device manager settings are the same as my W7 version.

I am using the one that W8 picked as driver. I have made a fresh W8 Pro install and all works well without installing manually an additional driver for the USB3 card?

Why should I install another driver?

Now I think of it ... I never installed special MoBo drivers as well. I did for W7 though. Mind you, I use a MoBo connection for the NOS1 (what this is all about - might others not understand).

Can't say that I know. When I first installed W8 I used the driver automatically chosen by windows, but then I remembered the website and installed the W8 version it provides. I don't know if there was a difference in SQ between the two. Bert, it would be interesting to see in device manager what version you are using.

Bert, it would be interesting to see in device manager what version you are using.

I can't remember...  :(

It was a Windows driver 6.something and now I have the 2.1.139 Renesas driver installed and turned of the power functions using the Renesas utility that installed itself together with the driver.

The power connector (I have a USB3.0 PCI card installed) should remain in place though, without this connection it looses sync with the NOS1.

I can't say that this made the difference in sound because I implied a few other changes at the same time which together improved the sound much.

One is to use another port for my external HDD, before it was connected to the same PCI card as the DAC.

Second was to remove the 1.02 NOS driver (somehow this one was still there after installing 1.03)

I did some more along the way but I seem to forget if nothing is written down.

W8 is starting to sound more than OK now though... ;-)
