Title: Problem when Minimize the OS in Windows 8
Post by: juanpmar on January 30, 2013, 05:36:05 pm
Once Iīve installed W8 and XXHE with the activation code, all was working fine but after I rebooted for Minimize OS and Unattended there is no way to launch XXHE.

The message I receive once I click in the XXHE shortcut in the desktop is this one:

CHECK UAC
After this a Reboot is required to put through changed User Account Control Settings;
Not allowing for this will quit XXHighEnd

Reboot?

Yes / No

When I click to Reboot nothing happens.

The changes I had made before I rebooted to Minimize OS were:

- Checking the UAC to see if the bar was all the way down, as it was down I didnīt made any change.

- Disabled the Window Firewall and all the notifications

I disabled the firewall before I tried to minimize the OS for the first time.

Juan,

I can't imagine the situation (especially the reboot not "answering") but something seems strangely wrong when it comes up with the message in the first place. Try this :

Go to your UAC settings, move up the slider one tad and reboot. Now fire up XXHighEnd again, expect the message to be there if all is right and click Yes.
And then see whether it still works after that.

Please take care (!) to write down all what you see happening at what you did. This is an unexpected situation and I try to learn form it. Ok ?

Good luck !
Peter

There is no way to open the UAC, when I go to the Control Panel > System and Security > Action Center > Change User Account Control Settings there is no way to open it, like there is no way to change the Firewall settings or turn it on.

Ok, so this is indication-1 that something must be strange (I can just do that in MinOS Mode).

Did you do anything special for creating user accounts ? Special =

1. Use the Administrator account (the real one);
2. Create another account besides the first one you created;
3. Start XXHighEnd "As Administraor";
4. Applied an upgrade from W7 or something;
5. ?

Notice that 1 u/i 4 should NOT be done.

Hi Peter, no, I didnīt anything with the UAC, just checked it because I forgot to check it when I installed XXHE, as it was ok all the way down I didnīt do anything, although I remember that when I closed that window appeared a message with "A reboot is necessary to apply changes" (or something similar). That message surprised me because I had not applied any changes.

The only other thing I did was to run Ccleaner and clean the registry and the lost files, I used it before many times in W7 and always was ok, the version I used now is also for W8. I canīt use Ccleaner now either to restore the registry and the files. There are a lot of things that now donīt work anymore. I guess that it will stay that way until I can open XX and turn off Minimize the OS.

I havenīt used the Administrator account nor created any other account nor started XXHE as administrator. There are no upgrades at all.

All what I did was done in XXHE like turn off all the services, turn on unattended and Minimize OS. The problem came after the reboot.

Now I see that when I click in the reboot message, the one when I try to launch XXHE, nothing happens but if I click Enter in the keyboard then the reboot works but after that when clicking in the XXHE shortcut the message appears again.

Maybe I should try to fix the OS choosing the fixing option, not making a complete W8 installation. I wouldnīt like to go again to the whole process (and buying a new XX Activation Code  :( )

Thanks,
Juan

This could be key to it all. I think (but never tried it really) that when you first let XHighEnd change the UAC and next (after a reboot I'd say) go into that screen and click Apply - that no matter what it will be seen as a change. Look at it as if XXHighEnd has set the slider one step more downwards and you now setting it back to what you see in there. That needs a reboot.
If you now don't reboot but go into Minimized OS I am not sure what happens (up to bugs in the OS).

Are you sure when you reboot another 2 times or so this all still does not work ? I guess it won't help, but it could.

If you take a break then I should be able to help you getting back from your Restore point. That is, I assume you did not reject that at going to Minimized OS ? *And* of course I'd have to assume this all still works ... and this doesn't seem likely.

So maybe it is better to do that "Refresh" right away. But that too could be hard to find for you.
I have to go now for a while, but maybe Alain is able to answer specific questions about this (or lead you to it). If he has time for it ...
Otherwise just wait until I'm back (90 minutes or so).

What W8 version is this ?
And did you upgrade from W7 or was it a new Install ?

I could go to the Restore point if I know where it is because yes I accepted it.

So far I rebooted four or so times with no results. Iīm using a W8 Pro version and I installed it in a new partition, so no W7 upgrade.

Juan, I sent you a PM about the possibility to revert to your Restore Point. If you made that of course (or let XHighEnd make it for you).

Peter

Edit : So you did. Good.
Notice that it is worth while to investigate what I sent you by PM. Just for the next time; That "Refresh" takes 45 minutes or so and still doesn't do all (but does a good job). And notice that a fresh install takes less than 20 minutes (but of course you will loose all). So if the Restore Point works ... that's 3 minutes plus the time learning to get there. *If* it still works.

Juan, only that one post I referred to via PM is relevant for you ...

Hi Peter, I went to cmd and typed: bcdedit /set bootmenupolicy legacy [enter] but the access is denied (The boot configuration data store could not be opened)

Is that what I should do?

Almost. The cmd prompt has to be "Run as administrator".

Run cmd as administrator was not possible. Iīve received this message:

C:\Windows\system32\cmd.ex

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has not enabled devices associated with it.

Hey Juan,

I have no clue in what state your OS got into. I must say that I am very sorry for your troubles. If I only knew what caused it (but mind that "needs reboot" message you mentioned earlier and which you didn't apply at that time ... I think).

Next will be that "Refresh" (which you won't be able to find because of your latest problems/messages I'm afraid) or a reinstall.

And hey, heads up but be prepared for all happening the same again. I REALLY can't think of etc., but mind that reboot when you are asked for it. And btw, not being able to click with the mouse on a message is also not right. So when you see that, don't do a thing but apply a Restore right away instead. This means, pull out the plug before more damage is done like earlier and tell me about it. I may be able to build some special version for you to find out what's happening.

Okay ?
Good that you tried all and/but sleep well now !
Peter

To not let this end in the blind ... All was solved with a reinstall of W8 (Re: My first Windows 8 experience (http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=2421.msg25023#msg25023)).
