Title: RAM Disc Impressions
Post by: Scroobius on February 17, 2013, 04:28:11 pm
I installed IMDisc (RAMDisc) on W8 and W7 system hard discs this morning. I keep W8 and W7 discs completely separate so my dual boot is the "manual" type.

First I setup "intermediate files" to run from RAMDisk rather then the dedicated partition on the OS SATA disc I usually use. Have to say I would struggle to hear any difference here (on both 7 and 8 discs). But I will continue to use RAMDisk for intermediate files.

Then I put XXHighEnd on a RAMDisk drive again on both the 7 and 8 discs. On both systems I would say this brought about an improvement. Not earth shattering but worthwhile I would say. It was probably more noticeable improvement on the W7 system.

W8 is still the clear winner here overall even though I do always run "hot".

Hey Paul, what kind of a difference, if any, do you hear with female vocals?

Hey Boleary  -  first of all I use 8ms USB buffer for both W8 and W7.

But your question about female vocals is very relevant. Actually it also applies to males vocals from what I hear. Basically I find vocals more detailed and simply it sounds as though more emotion is being conveyed. Sounds corny I know but vocals particularly make W8 the winner for me.

But it is not straightforward. I am finding W8 is totally ruthless in revealing faults in recordings. I was just listening to Dinah Washington - Mad About the Boy and oh boy it was painful wow what a bad recording. What I was listening to could strip wallpaper so I had to increase SFS to 430 to take the rough edges off. Something I have not had to do before. So W8 can do magic but can also sound ?able.

More listening needed. I shall report.

Cheers

Paul
