Title: Can you attenuate the volume over to a streamer that does not have volume?
Post by: rentaghost on October 10, 2013, 09:50:31 am
...for example - a Marantz NA7004 is a streamer but does not come with a preamp/volume control - so is there anyway to attenuate the sound using software on the computer where the music is being streamed from (probably not because its just streaming binary but I thought I would ask).

Good question. But personally I don't think so.
But well, if that device shows up under sound devices and you are able to use it in shared mode so the Windows Volume Control officially (normally) works, it is easy to try.
But I'm pretty sure you tried all that in the first place ...

I wondered if either your software could do it, or something like JRiver running on the PC (sending playlists out to the Marantz).

Are you saying that if the device shows itself as a sound card to the computer (for example the NAD DAC-2 wireless streamer which I have been considering) then adjusting the volume is possible?

The Marantz is only DLNA compatible so does not show itself up as a sound card - instead you push the music out via UPnP.

Yeah, I wanted to suggested UPnP as an example of it not working.
So no, XXHighEnd can't do that either. Notice though that theoretically it should be possible but then it needs a player (software) to be ahead of the streamer. And that undermines the streamer application which wants to do all on its own (self-contained), including the of course fixed user interface.

Still I can imagine that (maybe espicially) JRiver supports volume control for such a protocol. On the other hand it is a bit tough to imagine how it would work. So, press Play in JRiver and the DLNA compatible device should respond to that ?

Maybe you can apply some trickery by finding a (compatible) digital wireless connection that contains a volume control. But it wouldn't be the best, because such a device would decode to analog, attenuate and then output in digital again.
So never mind.

No, I don't know. Sorry ...
