Title: Unattend Playback Reboots Win8
Post by: minzyman on January 25, 2014, 03:05:05 am
Hello,

Wondering if anyone is having this trouble with Win 8 and 1.186a? I can play tracks just fine in Min OS when unattend is disabled. When I engage it, then hit play, the screen turns black a second, then next thing I see is Seattle again.. Win has rebooted.

I have Win Defender turned off, the Win Shell installed properly and working well, Metro never comes up any more, which is great.

Any suggestions?

/LM

I reckon what is happening is that windows is logging you off, not necessarily rebooting you.  I have this problem when windows thinks it is not activated and I un-minimise, reactivate windows (does not require internet) and then minimise again.  Happens about once a week for me.

Hmm .. I never heard of this.

So Lee, this is clearly different now from 0.9z-9b(etc.) ?

Try Q3,4,5 not at 1 and see if it helps ?

Also, are you dead sure that Defender is out of the way ? remember, this is not just about telling that it shouldn't be operative. It is not allowed to be in the processes list and servisces list. I forgot the exact names by now, but it wss exactly you where I dealt with that. You'll remember. So, dead sure ?

Regards,
Peter

I will have to figure out how to remove defender from services manually. Don't remember ever doing this with you, or via your instructions. Last time I had this problem, I just ran Defender and clicked the button to disable it. Maybe this doesn't do enough to turn it off though?

Will also try your suggestions about Q3,4,5.

Lee,

You are correct. I searched my email and it was not you. Apologies.

Can you try this :

Go to Start - Run - type gpedit.msc

Expand Administrative Templates (under Computer Configuration) and expand Windows Components.

Click Windows Defender and on the right hand side double click Turn off Windows Defender;
In there activate the "Enabled" radio button and click Apply.

Reboot is not necessary.

This is a text I saved for myself after testing it, but I am not sure whether this was for W8.1 (which needs this for sure) and whether this can also work for W8.

Otherwise it is about a service and a process; must be able to find that somewhere. But can you try the above please ?

Solving the problem is done with this :

Put (windefend) in Services to Keep;
Put (msmpeng) in Processes to Keep.

but

Now Defender just keeps running which is not what you want. The given solution in my previous post hopefully solves that.

Hey Peter,

So, tried the GPedit.msc thing. Also searched it, nothing. There is nothing on my hd when searching gpedit or gpedit.msc..

Will try your second solution.

Hi Lee,

Just tried it on my W8;
Open a Command Prompt (cmd - I used Run As Administrator) and in there type gpedit. Just works ...
(I only started the program and didn't try more)

Yep, and I just tried it on mine.

Right click on run and type gpedit... nothing. It can't find the file. And I was running in reg mode, not min.

Also typed in gpedit.msc at the run prompt, and also at the command prompt. Neither worked. "Can't find file.

Interesting...

Ok, last entry. So while gpedit did nothing on my windows 8 machine (can't find the file), I Googled Windows Defender and there are a couple ways one can/needs to turn it off completely. To search Windows defender pulls up the windows defender control panel, which may say (in bold red) that it is off and that your computer is vulnerable to malicious spyware. But doesn't mean WinDefender is actually off. If you go into tools or settings as admin, you can go to last entry and actually find a check box to disable win defender (yet again).

Now it is off and my machine plays in min OS unnatend mode successfully.

Thanks Peter. ;)

Lee,

I wanted to put up a screenshot for others, but now I can't find what you mean. This probably starts with your mentioned "tools or settings" (which is not Administrative Tools I think).

Thanks,
Peter
