Title: NOS1a - Switch #3 and USB Cables
Post by: PeterSt on October 31, 2014, 06:28:38 pm
Hey All,

As many of you will know, the middle switch in the NOS1a received the application of lifting a ground wire - the famous "black wire" to the PSU screw in the right leg.

If you did not receive information about this (per the email which announces the new DC Offset etc.) then you will not have this new Sw#3 application. Generally though this has been applied for everybody on the list from of position 12. Notice that all of you received your position when you applied for the upgrade.
Notice that the exception for first serve first come has been new customers, and those who were "above" number 12 on the list because of this are named by initials :
AK
PC
So these two persons did not receive any position, but they don't have the Sw#3 application anyway. Now :

A VERY complicated issue has come up (for me I mean), but when people are comparing USB cables they should do so with Switch #3 Up (off - ground cable lifted).

But to keep in mind - like the email will have told you - it is not guaranteed that this will give a stable situation; think similar as pulling the USB cable with PC and power amps on, that giving an oscillating sound (DC Offset not stable). This implies that you can use all with Sw#3 up, but you should never leave all alone at night etc. because the oscillation may start unexpectedly (and it will not stop automatically). Trying it out is harmless because you will know soon enough when something is not completely right - but be there when it happens (it is quite harmless and I guess we all know about pulling the USB cable from the normal NOS1-USB).

Those who do not have the Sw#3 application can mimic the same by (again) removing the black wire from that PSU screw. BUT they should not do that for the reason just given : you can't easily reconnect it when going to sleep etc.
No worries that you (first 11 + 2 on the list) can not use this. Others will (hopefully) tell about differences and when for the better you can apply the wire to the switch (already there) yourself. I will explain (later) in that case, but then at least you do it for a good reason (USB cables again don't matter much).

Meanwhile please pay attention to SQ in general when you try this. It could be better - it could be worse. A bit difficult when you'd eliminate the USB cable influence at the same time, so try to incorporate (interpret) the actual two changes at the same time.

I also have to notice that Sw#3 Up is consistent with the USB isolation at the PC side but at this moment I can not tell whether it is required to have the isolation at that side. So if you report your findings it is actually worth while to mention whether you applied that isolation at the PC side or not. Just try it as you have it, but report what the situation is.
N.b.: This all is/was about the Silverstone PCIe USB3 card. I myself have this isolated and Sw#3 always up, and nothing ever woke me up. But as said, that is the consistent situation.

Now I am curious ...
Peter

Hi Peter,

Do I understand it right when I see this identical with the black wire that we detached in the right portion of the NOS1 (coming from the USB port) and the isolation of the Silverstone USB controller card from the PC chassis ?

Alain - Yes. But it is only about the NOS1a.
