Title: Mac Mini power consumption
Post by: Mamba315 on November 24, 2014, 11:01:57 pm
Finally got around to measuring my Mac's power consumption during music playback.

2012 Mac Mini
OSX 10.9.5 (not Yosemite)
2.3 Ghz i7
256 GB SSD
4GB RAM

Music player - Audirvana+
Upsampling off, software volume control inactive - was testing on the Benchmark DAC2
Will run tests on the Phasure NOS1a to see if the up sampling filters & software volume control change these numbers during steady playback

1.0TB music drive connected via USB, video signal on - 13.0 watts
1.0TB music drive connected via USB, video signal off - 12.4 watts
1.0TB music drive not connected, video signal on - 10.7 watts
1.0TB music drive not connected, video signal off - 10.1 watts

1.0TB music drive is spinning type, not SSD

Next I will test on the Phasure NOS1a under Mac OSX, then Win7/XXHE

Another update..

Same Mac Mini running Win 7 Ultimate and XXHE - power draw hovers between 16-17 watts during music playback

Standard OS install with no tweaks, and with that external music drive connected.

So average 3.5 watts higher than OSX under similar conditions.

Correct Peter, I'll test that next.
