Title: Win 8 and 8.1 - 192 and 384KHz
Post by: fralippo on December 06, 2014, 01:36:23 pm
I use win 8.1 for XXhighend driving a diy non oversampling dac build around the PCM1704K. I upsample everything to 384KHz as my USB/I2S board handles it.
Now a friend of mine would like to do the same and will need a new PC.
I don't want to spend a full day to read all forum posts... but I'd like to give him best advices.
Win 8 seems to be the OS for best possible SQ. But can it work up to 384KHz? Or is this only possible with win 8.1?

Thank you for your suggestions.

Hi there,

The 384 you might have read about is something I came up with as AFAIK the first, and this is related so (WASAPI) Shared Mode. For XXHighEnd we don't use that - only Exclusive Mode. And in that mode there is no relation to this change in Windows 8.1. So Windows 8.1 only allows to resample to that (and now to all the other sampling rates) while prior to 8.1 192 was the max (and no 176.4 and 88.2).

Best regards,
Peter
