Title: Big Step towards Live Sound
Post by: Scroobius on December 10, 2014, 09:25:41 pm
4 weeks ago I went to a live concert at the Wigmore Hall in London. I purposely bought tickets for seats that were right at the front (3 rows back in fact from the stage). This was one of the events that are part of the "Jazz London" series of events. We listened to Bach's "Goldberg's" (one of the greatest pieces of music ever written?) straight classical and then Jazz interpretations. Well that is not the point. The point is that we sat very close to the piano. It was on the stage and we were maybe 15m away.

What really impressed me was the sheer volume and dynamics of the live sound of the piano. I my thoughts drifted away from the music and I started to think about what I hear at home and what is missing - volume and dynamics.

So on returning home I played what I know to be a great recording of the piano. And I was disappointed - it sounded a pale imitation of the real thing I had just heard at the Wigmore Hall.

But why? well simple really just not enough volume. So cranked up the volume to what I would have regarded as silly high.

The result? wow did it sound good. Much more like the real thing. But I have tried this in the past with other speakers and they fall apart at higher volumes. These Orelino's produce something very special at higher volumes.

High volumes is where they really start to perform - volume for sure is great but what really impresses is the dynamics and the fact that the sound does not become unduly distorted. Pure low distortion high volume dynamic music.

I had a rare experience this afternoon. The house to myself. So I grabbed an hour and just listened at high volume to some great favourite recordings. Wow did it sound good.

I have never heard anything like it through any replay system and had to be the closest to live sound I have ever experienced.

OK not all recordings can do justice to these Orelino's but with the right recording at the right volume wow these are something very special indeed.

I may be somewhat lucky in that my room may just be a bit special with these speakers but I have never heard anything like this anywhere before.

The cheapest upgrade ever - just turn the volume up - but for sure that would always have ruined the sound with any other speaker I have owned.

I have to say I worried about how much I spent on these speakers but now it seems that they could be just about the biggest bargain I have had in hifi terms.

Cheers

Paul
