Title: W10 - use of the W7 shell
Post by: Nick on June 11, 2015, 09:27:26 pm
Peter hi,

Is the W7 shell needed when using W10 ?

I have W10 up and running but explorer does not restart after XX reloads after playing in Mon OS mode.

Also the Windows start button (bottom left corner of the screen will not work even when freshly rebooted.

I did try to use the W7 shell program I guess this could have messed the W10 shell up ?

Thanks

Nick.

Hi Nick - no you don't need the W7 shell with W10.

The Windows start button should work in full OS and should continue to work after using XX in full OS. The Windows start button will not work in minimised OS - but I can't remember if that was the case before disabling Spartan  . Certainly after disabling Spartan and in MinOS the start button stops working. File explorer and IE should work in both full OS and min OS - that is after Spartan is disabled. Cant remember what happened before that.

Best of luck

Cheers

Paul

Most probably Yes. No idea how to repair it either. Reinstall of W10 may be the fastest option.

The Start Button will stop working after the first fire up of XXHighEnd and the reboot following that (UAC level goes to a value which "Metro" (= Start) does not like).
But do we care ? I don't think so.

Remember, this W10 version is a drag anyway. But really no problem in the end, that I can see.

Regards,
Peter

Peter, Guys,

Thanks for the explanation sounds like what I'm seeing is "normal" behaviour for the pre release version of w10 so I won't worry about it.

Sound wise it's interesting, generally improved partially highs and voices but bass has lost some force drive and definition. I'm really still setting it up so I hope it might be tuneable in this respect. If so then first opinion will be upside everywhere.

Regards,

Nick.

Hi Nick,

This will not be normal :

Also not sure how you would go about next with no desktop (this is what you are implying). Unless you can do with XXHighEnd shortcut commands (or OSK). But ...

Peter,

I think I just need to reinstall, but that is quite quick so not too much of a problem. What I have been doing to get around the problem is just entering task manager to manually run explorer.

I think the case of the problem was trying to use the W7 shell which was my mistake.

Nick.
