Title: Windows 10 build 10586.0 can't get Internet Explorer available
Post by: arvind on January 15, 2016, 12:35:25 pm
Hi Peter,

After installing windows 10 build 10586.0, when I proceed to make Internet Explorer available. I go into settings>Internet options >programs >set associations, a window pops up which says "To change your default app, go to settings>System >Default apps".

This never happened before with 10074.

How do I proceed?

Best regards,

Arvind

Hi Arvind,

I know that this happens but I never saw it happening myself. Also, because of "improper" feedback from others, I still don't know how to deal with it exactly. But what I got from it was this :

After this message just proceed with what you can from that Tutorial and when this is "nothing" or you can't come further with it, just go to the PayPal button because in that stage it should work already.

Please try this briefly and let me know what happens; hopefully we can then describe for real what to do.

Thank you !
Peter

Hi Peter,

Once the settings>System >Default apps window pops up there is no way to proceed further.

Clicking the start button doesnt open anything, so no way to go into settings >System >Default apps from there too. Windows +i also doesn't open the start menu.

Clicking PayPal button gives an error message "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application....."

Best regards,

Arvind

Hmm ... So why does it work for others ?

A few (general) remarks :

When such a screen is overlapping the remainder, in my view you can always get rid of that again. Swipe it away or go to the down-right corner or whatever. But possibly needs the Windows 8/8.1/10 experience. Maybe Alt-F4 closes it.
(I am not sure whether this is part of your problem, where others tell "just continue with the procedure")

RightClick on the StartButton will work, but dont ask me what it brings you for aid.

Do not even attempt to set that default app, because it seems clear that this isn't working anyway. But also not necessary (if I read the messages from others correctly).

Notice that people indeed have been able to make iexplorer the default (instead of Edge) but it won't be (necessary) for the Paypal button.

Maybe any of the others can offer some help here ?

Best regards,
Peter

Arvind

Settings is now in Metro:-

Left click on window (bottom left) to get to metro.

Click settings then system

scroll down to DEFAULT APPS

you should be able to make IE the default web browser from there.

Arvind

Just checked on another 10586 pc.

First I had to turn on IE via:-

control panel / programs /programs & Features / turn Windows features

then associate IE for HTML & HTM file types and towards end of list protcols HTTP & HTTPS via:-

control panel / programs /default programs / Associate a file type

Colin,

I am in MinOS (and not easy for me to go to normal OS) and RightClick on the StartButton allows me to select Control Panel. In there, in the search box (top right) I enter Default Programs and this brings me to your list.
You can also enter "Associations" in the search box, and there the extensions pop up from the Turorial (but also way more).

I did all from there, including your hints, but the error remains. That is, for me, because I am not connected to the Internet. I receive a Ping error, which should be logical in itself because nothing can be reached (I ping a site indeed) but it doesn't go as expected.

I will try look into it more tomorrow.

Thank you for the help, Colin.

Regards,
Peter

Hi Peter/ Colin,

Thanks for the help. I have a peculiar problem, the start button ( bottom left) doesn't open Metro. So I went through search>associations to default apps. Changed Edge to IE as the default browser. But once I exit the window it goes back to Edge as the default browser.

Still trying to figure out how to make it stick.

Best regards,

Arvind

Arvind

my last post was not correct, I've edited it to following (I've gone through XXHE installation and activation paypal button works)

First I had to turn on IE via:-

control panel / programs /programs & Features / turn on Windows features.

then associate IE for HTML & HTM file types and towards end of list protcols HTTP & HTTPS via:-

control panel / programs /default programs / Associate a file type

What Colin says seems correct to me. That is what I did, but I still get that error; As said I am not connected to the Internet, but when I sorted out the procedure for 10074 that was the same (but must have been in Normal OS).

I suppose I need to do something about this anyway ... this has become too awkward for normal procedure ...

Peter
