Title: Playback stutters after 10 min play
Post by: coliny on February 14, 2016, 12:33:05 pm
Recently I've been getting stuttering after 10+ min playback unattended. Sometimes playback stops altogether with message 'playback stopped because data did not arrive in time'.

I've not done anything that might cause this, increasing Q1 may help a little but is not a cure.

Anyone had similar problem ?

Colin

Hi Colin,
had some issues in the past too. Did you change something in hardware or software before?

hi Georg

No changes to hardware/software since 2.04a which I've used quite a bit without problem.

Another user had similar problem & cured it by rebooting to NormOS & then back to minOS. I've tried the same and so far no stuttering. I'll see how it goes before wondering what this might mean.

Hi Colin,
the issues were gone here after disabling of the swap file and disabling of the hybernation. Sometimes I thought that there was some interaction with the ram disk driver.

Hmm ...

Georg, that is actually a good idea !
I could quite nicely explain why it happens after 30 minutes because maybe after that period of time we played enough to virtually use up all of the memory so after that some interaction with the swapfile may emerge.

All I know is that I, after some weeks, suddenly thought of such a thing myself - had forgotten to switch those both off - while for me (RAM-OS situation) it is even more crucial because the swapfile eats internal memory (hyberfil the same).

Do notice that we are not able to find logic in the Garbage Collection processes of Windows, because they have a very complex life of their own and besides that change heavily per Windows version. BUT :
At my own many struggles to tackle those processes and keep them under (my) control, I do know (recall) that one of the tricks to free (now garbage = unused) memory was to let overflow the memory (this has been active in a couple of XXHighEnd versions). But that did not work well, because the huge Garbage Collection process springing from that, caused swapfile priority #1 stuff to happen, that making the music stutter.
Georg, you may even recall this, although it is many years ago by now).

This brings me to two things :
Colin, you may try to swap the state of the Garbage Collect setting (small chance only this this will help).
Possibly it is still so that you prefer to be in Normal OS; with these kind of problems I most certainly would not do that ...

Regards,
Peter

Hi Peter, Georg

I have always had Pagefile off

Garbage collect also off, I get error with it ON.

I went straight back into minOS, I'm not going to make any changes for a while to see if the process has definitely cured the stutters.

Curious thing was they always happened after 10-15 min play without problem even though sample rates & bit depths varied from playlist to playlist (always same within a playlist).
