Title: CPU Fan
Post by: Gerard on April 04, 2016, 05:06:38 pm
Peter,

Are the CPU fans still needed? I disconnected one a long time ago. Still have one attached.  :)

Phew Gerard, good question.
I'd say it is too dangerous to anticipate on the MinOS + BIOS settings. I mean : if it happens at some time that you're in Normal OS for some reason (happens often enough to me) while also the BIOS accidentally resets, then all is at full power already when you're in the BIOS to set things. If *that* situation allows one cpu cooler fan only, then it is ok.

Let's keep in mind : when the PC came about I was only testing for highest speeds and such and was never bothered by the low speeds we use today. So actually I don't know really ...

Regards,
Peter

Thanx  :)

Hi Gerard, I have only one fan in the Audio Pc and thatīs the one in the CPU. The fan I use is working at 600rpm and is almost totally silent (6db) so if the problem is noise with this fan the problem is solved because it is absolutely inaudible at more than 20cm from the pc, in fact I canīt hear anything even with my ear almost touching the pc case. On the other hand if the problem is the electrical "noise" (interferences) generated by the fan itself, then the problem still exists. I can work in the bios when I need it without any problem.

This is the fan I use: http://noctua.at/en/nf-s12a-uln (http://noctua.at/en/nf-s12a-uln)

Hi,
I also have only one fan for the cpu. It is powered by a separate lineair psu at 7V. At one time I forgot to power up the lineair psu, so the fan was not running. After about 1/2 hour or less the music started to stutter...... Cpu to hot. I started the fan and temperature went down. Music was fine again. And this is with MinOS. So yes the fan is needed.

For Juan and others because it could be hard to understand :

What "we" use is the Noctua LH-L12 which as two fans.
So the talk is about "hey we shut off one of the fans already - can the other maybe shut off too ?"

Btw, which of the two did you guys cut off ? The bottom or the top one ? (my guts say the bottom one)

Thanks,
Peter

Peter, that's right for the ones that are using the NH-L12 or have your Audio Pc. In my case I only use one fan, the NF Audio S12A ULN, because my PC is not a HTPC and use a heatsink larger than that used in the NH-L12. Thus the NF S12A at 600rpm is sufficient but could not be so in other cases where a cooler with less cooling capacity is used. I searched for the quieter fan possible to maintain an adequate temperature and in the bios I can see that after a couple of hours the temperature does not exceed 42°C, so that will be even lower in Minimize mode.
In conclusion, the CPU fan is necessary. I'm not sure if I understood well if Peter turns the fan Off in Minimize and On when in the bios. Personally I have it always On because the noise is imperceptible and also I canīt lower the CPU frequency as much as Peter.

Regards,
Juan

The CPU fanS run always in my situation. But they are completely inaudible, so it is not about the acoustical noise anyway. The discussion will thus be about the elecrical noise, or actually : power draw. I forgot, but I recall that an average (running) 12V fan consumes 5W.

Peter

The NF-S12A ULN (the fan I use) Max. input power is 0,72W http://noctua.at/en/nf-s12a-uln/specification (http://noctua.at/en/nf-s12a-uln/specification)

In your NH L12 is 0,6/0,96 W http://noctua.at/en/nh-l12/specification (http://noctua.at/en/nh-l12/specification)

So not a big problem in either case, if Iīm correct.

Juan

I am not aware of any problem anyway !

If you mean that the consumption is so low that it is not a problem anyway ... correct. But it still is so that everything matters (SQ wise).

Peter

I agree with you Peter but it seems that thereīs nothing we can do about it due that we have to use the cpu fan anyway.

Juan

I removed the upper one for a long time without problems. :)

Isn't it possible to power the fan(s) voltage controller with an external source ? A linear power supply or a switching power supply ?

Hi Alain, the fan I use can be powered by the PSU as it comes with an adapter so I imagine that it could also be powered by an external power supply.

Juan  :)

Hi Juan,

If I finally happen to put it in practice one day, I will use a linear power supply with a voltage controller to control the CPU fans (at least) :)

Alain

Alain, the Noctua has an adapter to reduce the speed that can be connected to other adapter with a molex to be connected to a power supply. If you have a 12v linear power supply probably you can connect the fan there at the speed you want.

Juan
