Title: Installing 2.06a
Post by: boleary on September 18, 2016, 04:01:38 pm
Morning Peter, am having a problem here. Every time I extract the 2.06a "over" zip in the drive c XX folder (tried 5x) apparently nothing happens because when I restart XX, 2.05 starts and not 2.06a. I am in the base version of 10586 and am not in minimised mode. It's strange because the zip program, RAR, goes through all of its steps wherein I make sure the the destination directory is C/XXhighEnd on my RAMOS drive. When I hit the extraction button I'm immediately asked if I want to replace a particular file and I select "Yes, Do This For All" assuming there are other similar files. Then I do not see the files extract  in "extraction bars" like they usually do when I extract files with RAR, so I assume it is finished updating to 2.06 but apparently nothing has been extracted? Either the download is corrupted or I'm overlooking something incredibly simple!

Hi there Brian,

Possibly you have those files in use ? So for example, I'd say that when XXEngine3.exe is still running (and it always is after playback for the OS boot session, unless killed by you), the .exe of if can not be overwritten.

Otherwise I really have no idea.

Try to extract it in a dummy empty folder if you expect something to be corrupt; now you can see what really happens.

Best regards,
Peter

Brian, another hint :

5 times out of 10 when I dibe into someone's PC with whatever kind of problem, I see an inconsistent setup of what should be and what is. Thus for example, the icon on the desktop does not refer to the XX folder of the XXHighEnd version which is supposed to start - nuumerous (trial) folders exist in the first place (so now all is doomed to fail) and also people manage to install things on the Deskop which does NOT work (it seems to work but is unmanagable afterwards).

I am not saying that you are among those. However, when you are used to always install in a new place (like it always went until the last version) it is more difficult to do something wrong. Only when you now have to "amend" an install, suddenly the issues appear (and installing on/"in" thee desktop is really one of them).

Thanks Peter, just got it to work and, of course it was my error: it was creating and extracting into a NEW folder in the XXhighend folder so nothing was being overwritten. My bad. : )
