Title: Minimize OS for Windows Server 2016
Post by: bodiebill on August 20, 2017, 09:25:25 pm
Just purchased XXHighEnd, which I installed on Windows Server 2016. For a few reasons, I prefer that OS to W10. However, when trying to use XX's 'Minimize OS', I get an error that it does not work for Windows XP. Is there a way to use 'Minimize OS' with Server 2016?

Ouch ... Yes ... Of course R2016 is there now, but XXHighEnd 2.08 is not yet. It should be there by now but I got a bit busy. What you can do :

In your XX folder there are a number of IsOSxxx.tss files. Rename the one closest to R2016 to the .tst extension.
I forgot how I arranged it for the W10 builds, but you should see something of W10. It won't be 100% optimal, but I think it can run.

I hope I can sufficiently help from where I am...

Peter

Thanks Peter for your fast response.
See screenshot: I tried renaming OSIsW2012R2.tss to OSIsW2012R2.tst and then OSIsW2012.tss to OSIsW2012.tst but in both cases I still get the error message 'not available for XP'.
Or maybe I misunderstood?

You understood correctly. However, R2012 is W8 and that will never work anyway. Otoh the fact that it still comes up with the XP message indicates more "not working".
You should try the OsIsW10 and cross your fingers  ...

And always have one .tst at the time !

Renaming OSIsW10.tss to OSIsW10.tst did not work either: still the 'not available for XP' error.

So now I have to decide what to do, which depends on the answers to two questions:
(1) When will XX's 'Minimize OS' be available for WS2016, approximately?
(2) In case I would use an OS that currently supports 'Minimize OS', can I use it and then run another program, such as HQPlayer, benefitting from this OS minimization? (As I also want to be able to play DSD files.)

I guess I need to choose between either sticking with WS2016 and wait, or move to another OS. In the latter case, would WS2012R2 be OK including 'Minimize OS'?
Or a third choice would be: not use 'Minimize OS' :-|

By the way, I am impressed by how XX is built, documented, and – most importantly – sounds. Thank you, Peter!

A full Yes.

I already intended to have 2.08 ready before the vacation. I will work on it now right from when we're back. Say half of September and with spades of new goodies.
The hardest parts is the Release Notes (takes days to write them).

Peter

Thanks Peter, that is good news indeed. I will stick with Server 2016 and wait for the new XX release.
Enjoy your holiday!

One more question: I get a similar error about 'XP and lower' when I try to select 'Straight Contiguous'.
Will that also become possible for WS2016 in the next release?

It is the very same problem; some general routine fails because R2016 is not anticipated.
And of course : Sorry for the inconvenience.

OK, good to know. If I find more WS2016 related issues, I will let you know here.
And no need to apologise! Even with WS2016 as it is, the inconvenience is outweighed by the many good things that XX has to offer.

I'll add my thoughts here.
Nobody else tried Server 2016? And which build?
Some people in other places *that dont use xxhe* swear by it sounding better than w10.

Since I discovered my cpu is 64 bit, I want to try that too, once I decided what sounds better between my old w7 setup and w10 14393.

Well, we better regard that BS because FIRST you/we must find places elsewhere, where people really differentiate between W8, W8, W8.1, W10, W10 all the builds etc. etc.

And there is one place only where this differentiation is made and explicitly discussed.

So ?
