Title: Upcoming XXhe 2.08 and volume control
Post by: fralippo on September 06, 2017, 11:38:48 am
Since years myself and a couple of friends of mine use XXhe player. Driving DIY multibit NOS dacs with custom made tube output sections. As these are the main players they're directly connected to power amps, no preamps and NO analogue volume controls. DAC's maximum output amplitude is set in a way that you can play 99.9% of the files with no need for higher gain. Tipically we play between -20 to -5db.

In our opinions this is a great sounding solution (when you don't want/need other sources)... as far as DAC's output is the "right" one :-)

Anyway, unfortunately, there are some troubles with the attenuator. Also older XXhe 1.xx behaved in the same way.

You select an album and start it. During first track you set volume at the desired level: it works fine. When second track begins MUCH often sound level is MUCH higher than before. We don't think attenuation switches to zero db but surely several db more. Really annoying. Note that display indicating attenuation doesn't change its number.

It'd be nice to see improvements in this department too with upcoming 2.08 !

What's others experience on this matter?

Thanks!

Haha, that it is not true ?
Well, of course others may jump in, but I never ever heard of it, and also never noticed it. Maybe it goes unnoticed.
BUT
The volume of 2.08 sure CAN show such behavior. Ehh ...

Yes.

The volume of 2.08 works very different, with the main characteristic of chaning "instantly". But there can be this problem with it, and I can't find the culprit.
What would be "nice" if it can be proven that this is inherently there, and always, exactly as per your suggestion. But mind you, it can easily be overlooked when there is this pause between the change of volume, when this happens in a kind of random period of time (which can easily be 5 seconds, depending on set settings). Anyway with 2.08 it goes instantly, and there I notice ... the same ?

I hope this is not too confusing, but it won't be solved in 2.08.

Do notice that I always use Volume Normalization and it should be related to that. Do you use that too ?

Thank you for your help !
Peter

Yes... a bit confusing... I don't know it it's due to the language but you sometimes are  :innocent:

No, we've not yet used Volume Normalization. Do you think it'd help problem I reported?

Nah, I can not imagine that.

Can you tell me ... Assumed that you can really repeat this situation at will, does it help when you right away change the volume (say one up and one down) ? Thus, that in that case the volume comes back at a level which is the same as that of the next track ?
