Title: New BIOS setting (XXHighEnd PC Mach II)
Post by: PeterSt on March 27, 2018, 09:16:36 am
To all owners of the Mach II XXHighEnd PC :

Because I am struggeling with one of the PCs a little, by sheer accident I found a setting which made me think "wait ...".

Under Advanced, in the CPU tab, we normally adjust the Ratio. That is, we over here do that for you new owners. I did this (already with the old XXHighEnd PC) so the speed of the processor becomes "fixated" to something which will not engage Turbo Boost.
Then I had this problem with one of the PCs and that PC told me that Turbo Boost could engage anyway. Huh ?
By also accident I learned the other day that Turbo Boost can also be disengaged explicitly. OK, this is in another motherboard, but with that knowledge I started looking for that in this PC. Well, easy to find because it is there all in the wide open (a few lines below the Ratio). So I set that to "Disabled" and for this PC it helped.

Because Turbo Boost officially can't be engaged with the Ratio is set to other than "Auto" I got the idea that maybe it always does something, or tries to do something (this latter could even be worse). I mean, also in my own Stealth, and of course yours. And who knows we could improve SQ by means of now explicitly turn it off.

Well, I don't know about you, but for me it is a whole of another world again. I am not sure it is for the better in the end, but I feel it inherently is and if it isn't (apears not to be) for net result, it is something else which requires attention now.

So I feel that this imlpies a next dimension of tuning for the again better SQ.

Peter

PS: Might you have the idea of having messed up in the BIOS, there's a save version for everbody under the "XX01" name. You can chose it as "Restore from disk" or something like that (you will easily find it when it is needed).

Peter

Peter,

when i disable Turbo Boost in Bios CPU Ratio goes  from All to Auto.
It is posible to turn CPU Ratio back to  All, Save and Exit
But if you go back to Bios Turbo Boost is back to Enabled ?

Hi Tore,

Yes, that is what I noticed too, but the net result after booting and "XXHighEnd interference" is the same as with the Ratio set.

I don't know yet where the difference is, but with my own Stealth I can set both the Ratio and disable Turbo Boost at the same time. I can't imagine that the MoBo matters, but of course mine is two years old by now and yours is only a couple of months old (similar to the other PC which behaves like you describe).

Best regards and thank you for sharing,
Peter

This time Turbo Boost stayed at Disable :-)

Will test it now

Tore,

What did you do for that ?

Thanks,
Peter

Peter,

1. Turbo Boost : Disable
2. CPU Ratio : back to All Core
3. CPU Cache Ratio : 18
4. BCLK frequency : 96 (lowest possible)

Does it look OK ?

I think it was not done anything with the CPU speed when i got my PC
(nothing under "XX01" )

What ? ... OK, that implies we forgot that. This is possible.
So you mean that you can't find any XX01 to load back, while you sure found were to be for that ? (like Save to Disk is also an option) ?

This is already less plausible because I test this all myself.
Still can happen, but now it would mean two subsequent errors. Normally we make none ! haha
Really ?

For the answer to my question "how ?" The crucial part seems to be missing - how do you end up with Turbo  Boost disabled and the ration not to 100. But also : you talk about "Cache" Ratio, and that is not right ...

Peter

I did pkt 1-4 , after that Turbo Boost stayed at Disable

Now i have loaded XX01 in Bios. Then CPU Cache Ratio and BCLK frequency is back to Auto. (this is why i tought it was not done anything with CPU speed)

After that i have only changed Turbo Boost to Disable and CPU Ratio back to All Core.

When i enter Bios Turbo Boost is still Disable

Hi Tore,

All I asked (or told about) was setting TurboBoost to Disable.
Of course you can drag in a 200 other settings in the game (you again mentioned something else) but this is nit what I wanted anyone to do.

For now (if you want to play with this setting at all) :

1. Load back XX01;
2. Disable Turbo Boost;
3. Save and reboot.

Then you have the same as I do (if you leave all other settings alone :)).

Best regards,
Peter

Yes, that is done

The other things i did was because it looked like Turbo  Boost was going back to Enable

But not now :-)

Hi Peter,

Just to be sure:

Only disable Turbo Boost and CPU Ratio will reset to Auto?
or
Disable Turbo Boost and CPU Ratio back on All Core and All Core on 18.

regards, Arjan

Hey Arjan,

Quote
Disable Turbo Boost and CPU Ratio back on All Core and All Core on 18.

If all is "normal" (?) that doesn't work.
This one does and is fine (as far as I myself can see) :

All Core was goling from 18 to 24 after the last XX01 load

Is this normal ?

Hi Tore,

No, not normal. But you said similar in the beginning (of this topic) but then I couldn't understand (or believe).
Maybe I still can't believe it. :)

Try this please (and nothing else) :

1. Set to 18 again.
2. Save the settings (normals Save BIOS procedure). If it implies a restart that's OK but go into the BIOS again.
3. Use the "Save" function and now enter a name like XX02. Enter saves it (also see instructions in the right hand side). Do NOT overwrite XX01 ever.
4. Restart and go into the BIOS again. Do you still see the 18 ? (but also notice the speed the processor runs at - this shows in the top. It will not be 2400 if all is rright.
5. Load back the XX02.

And now you sort of say that the 18 has disappeared and has changed to Auto again ?

Restart to make whatever it is effective. Go into the BIOS again. You should be in the state of which you claim it happens after loading back XX01.
... Which I don't believe.

So now you have done this :

6. Load back XX01. Restart to be sure what's in there for sure.

... And I say that all is fine and it shows 18.
But is it ? :scratching:

You can leave the XX02 be. But if XX01 does not work for you, then XX02 does for the future.

Best regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,

Last time i entered Bios i was in MinOS

Is that OK ?

Tore

Tore, the BIOS doesn't know about MinOS as such.
So no, that does not matter. :)

Hi Peter,

With the CPU ratio on default Auto the base CPU speed seems higher. Is that true? If so 43 will result in a higher CPU speed then before. Or is that a wrong assumption?

regards

Hi Arjan,

Yes, that is what I would assume too. But I don't see that happening. But careful : for net result when playing with XTweaks acative.
So yes, the by XXHighEnd "boosted" speed is higher (when XXHighEnd is up) but this is only comfortable.
And if you don't use XTweaks at all, it also matters.

One more thing to be careful about : For me this has been an ad-hoc change possibly not 100% all the way thought over. So I most certainly won't be the know-it-all here. So keep 'm coming ...

Peter

Still on 18, processor speed 1800

Can you even enter that ? I recall that if I put the "native" speed in there, it will jump to Auto by itself. But maybe that is in my imagination.

Interesting point is that I started working on this myself (see first post in this topic) because of such a thing. I just noticed that Turbo Boost was on (in the live environment (OS booted up)) which can't be, officially. So the MoBo apperently was capable of booting into that mode, no matter Turno Boost should be off *because* the Ratio was not set to Auto. Understand ?
I also saw exactly what happened in that one situation (I saw it happening only once) : I rebooted, system went normally off, went on, went off again and went on again. And then Turbo Boost was on. Normally this goes unnoticed, but I was working on a problem with that PC and so I saw it happening.

So Tore, what you observed may or may not have come from loading that XX01 but I feel that even without this loading (while it already was loaded of course) this can happen. But I never saw it before (which once again : is coincidental to observe to begin with).

I wouldn't pay attention to it. But if you suddenly see your white led being On while at other times that never happens, then you can bet that Turbo Boost is On "unsolicitedly".

Thank you for the feedback !
Peter
