Title: Q2 ... could people bear it ?
Post by: PeterSt on March 03, 2008, 04:28:18 pm
Guys (and Gals ?),

More or less derived from the happenings as expressed in Interesting Q1 & .9U-2 (http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=411.0), and no matter how short noticed (and with few responses) this is so far, I think it is time for a Q2 slider (noting that Q1 is not being called Q1 for nothing all the time :grazy:) ...

It will be a most complex attack to get good sound, uhmm, better sound again. I'm fairly sure it will work out.
But are you up to it ? Isn't it too soon ? Shouldn't we wait a bit ?

Don't say "No !" too quickly, because "adjusting" XX to achieve the best sound will get more complex again;
Each new version of XXEngine3 (!) would take a new dial-in of this Q2 with no linearity and no logic in its relative positions, the other parameters still playing their own roles. In fact it would be nothing for myself, and somehow I want to get used to the latest SQ first, already not knowing whether I should change Q1 ever again (and I have never been much able to find the best setting of Q1 myself, and merely copied orther's behaviours already because a kind of lack of time in trying it all out :swoon:).

On the other hand, I can see now that it is needed, since at this moment we are under the (say "needed") influence of XXHighEnd again. IOW, I will not be able to retain the SQ as how it is now with any upcoming version, and were XXHighEnd will be changed for sure.

Btw, I think Q2 can be a self-calibrating thing, but it will need much experience with it to get that far. Think in terms of many months.

Oh well, maybe I don't really have the question to you, but I merely want to announce something for a next version with the bit depth stuff and such almost done.
 :)
Peter

Well, I've got a new amp coming to adjust to.
www.moscode.com
So I say wait until I get a handle on it hehe.  Maybe other things to work on?  I had just started moving the Q1 around a bit more.  I was going to do more testing, but I still think 18 beat out -2 invert (YMMV) when I tried it before my amp blew...

. . . I will not be able to retain the SQ as how it is now with any upcoming version . . .

WTF?? Give us great SQ and then you're going to take it away?  :scare:

But seriously, what does this mean?

It's related to a post elsewhere;
If indeed it is so that the best SQ now comes from Attended Playback, I will not be able to retain that. It's just the influence of the, say, GUI (and all in there) and I just *must* be able to mangle in there what I want (hell, if one needs an additional checkbox the sound changes !).

But if you perceive the best SQ from Unattended, or just are satisfied with that, there's no problem.
Btw, what are "problems" actually ? hehe

So now it has become time to find the best setting for Q1.
Trying different settings from 26, 16, 14, 12, 10, 6,2, -2 with an mp3 file in attended mode I can not really hear the difference.
I only get crazy hearing the same song over and over again.
Then better play something I love, back to Cassandra.
Well with setting 14 I can hear the air going through her throte when she is breathing, with the other settings I only hear that she is taking a breath.
Then to unattended mode it get's really much more interesting, some more acoustics I think, more colour and drama.
So am I ready for Q2?

BTW, all samplerates and bitdepths are still supportd by the terratec.

And for the competition: Sometimes hickups at the beginning of a song, especially with higher samplerates, maybe my external usb-harddisk is not fast enough?
And when stop and play of the same song, sometimes using the scrollbar, the sound can be teletubbylike, after stop/start it is normal again.

Not that this is part of the subject, please pay attention to Vista not just having shut down one of the services. That is, I recognize what you say here (including some crackles you reported before) but with me this in 100% of cases goes along with a sutdown service.
Things won't restore indeed without Stop and Play.

Yes maybe an other thread.
Before Vista shut down a host service and I had to do a hard reset of the laptop to get xx working again.
Is there something I can do about it?

As you know (I think), set the priorities to Nothing.

It took me a small year, but found some spare time to implement it today. :prankster:
