Title: No more 'Straight Contiguous'... all of a sudden
Post by: manisandher on March 07, 2021, 06:37:27 pm
It's been a long while since I've bothered playing around with any settings in XX, but thought I'd try a few things out. Playing around with different SFS settings, I got the error message attached - I've been using Straight Contiguous since it was introduced and can't recall ever getting this error in the past. I wasn't at all bothered because I was in RAM and knew that if something got messed up, it'd clear itself on a reboot. But no...

I've rebooted back into SSD and back into Normal too. The error message remains, no matter what I set SFS to. And 'User Rights Assignment' looks fine.

I can only conclude that this must be a hardware issue. Something wrong with my 48GB memory perhaps?

I've activated 'Log Activities', but *.log files don't seem to show much at all.

Ideas?

Mani.

Mani,

Well, a logical reason would be that there's insufficient memory. Thus, just all together (like only one DIMM of 8GB suddenly at work).

Remember that the Max SFS is determining the allocation. So set that small too (or set it to equal the dynamic setting).

- Maybe it is related to one of the other settings you changed ? (and you told to Save (to the SSD) at rebooting ?

- Maybe your SFS is plainly too high ? (try 20 or so)

- Is this the Mach II or Mach III ?

N.b.: I have no idea whether memory can shut itself off for parts of it (like a HDD can do that), and that thus the contiguous memory really is not available.

You could exchange memory (all of it in one go) between your Mach II and Mach III. It is (about) the same and harmless to SQ when interchanged.

Regards,
Peter

Thanks Peter.

It's the Mach III. Yes, I will swap the memory from the Mach II if I have to.

Max SFS has always been set to 24.00. I've just brought it down to 4.00 and set SFS to 1.00. Playback bow works again  :)

I usually keep SFS<2.00 anyway, so as long this continues to work, I should be OK. The only issue I might run into is playing MQA files... but I very rarely do this anyway.

Strange that this has started to happen all of a sudden...

Mani.

Do you still see the 48GB of memory ?
(like the below shows all my 32GB)

All 48GB is detected...

Ha! Of course, everything's started working properly again. Even SFS 200 works fine now. I haven't done anything.

I really don't know what caused the error.
