Title: Firewire connection
Post by: Berco on April 07, 2008, 05:10:26 pm
Hi Peter,
I have a FF800 and I'll want to know if it's better to connect it directly to the firewire connection of the motherboard ( it's supply with an independant psu) or on a Pci or perhaps better a Pci e card ?
Bets regards
Bernard

Hi Bernard,

Take a PCI card (and not even the cheapest one). It does matter (much) for me, and I encountered the same with others.
Anyway for the 10 euro such a card costs, you can always try !

A good firewire card with Ti chipset costs 50-60 euros. The cheap one probably wont change much vs the motherboard controller.

Hi guys,

I'm a new comer onto your very interesting Forum. :)
Related to FireWire sound quality and chip, I've found the following info on ECHO brand website (since I'm planning to purchase an ECHO's AudioFire 4 external sound card which is a cheaper alternative than the well known RME FireFace 400 / 800).

QUOTE:

3. What FireWire card do you recommend for my AudioFire?

We recommend more recently manufactured FireWire cards with a Texas Instruments chipset. If you are encountering problems with the built-in FireWire in your desktop or laptop, we suggest that you try a PCMCIA or ExpressCard FireWire card and disable the built-in FireWire.

The following FireWire chipsets have produced good results:
Texas Instruments: TSB12LV26
Texas Instruments: TSB43AB23
Texas Instruments: PTSB41LV03 (This is an older chipset and does not work well at 192K with our AudioFire 12.)
Agere: FW323-06
Agere: FW323:05

The following FireWire chipsets are not recommended:
Via: VT6306
Via: VT63061

This ECHO AudioFire 4 output S/PDIF in coaxial-RCA connector format. It can be bus powered but also an external wall block power supply is included in the box. It works well on my personal MacBook (Intel based). My business IBM laptop has no FireWire port, so I can't really comment in this case.

Btw, is it possible to run XXHE on Intel based Mac? Or should I invest in a new personal laptop like Sony VAIO, ACER (both supporting FireWire and direct S/PDIF out - ACER only)?

Have a nice day.

Laurenta, thank you very much for this help. The Texas Instruments chip set indeed seems to be the best. And as said elsewhere, a good firewire interface really matters for sound.

I never heard that the Mac doesn't work (in fact for Engine#1 and #2 it just works) but since not many people use it (I think) I can't be sure just *everything* works as intended (but I wouldn't know why not).

Btw, I see in your signature that you assume that Q1 as well as the Digital Volume is fixed because of the demo version, but this is not the case. They are enabled when you use Vista/Engine#3 ...

Thanks again,
Peter

Hi Peter and All,

A compelling new FW interface product from the very professional Swiss brand WEISS:
http://www.weiss.ch/afi1/afi1.htm

This could well be a very serious contender to your famous RME FireFace 800 (same price range about 1300€).
However, your DAC must accept AES/EBU input (or optical ADAT; which is the rarest option; only for some Pro studio units).

Cheers

Thanks a bunch Edwards; this VESTA interface looks even simpler and better than the AFI1. I would like to know its street price..?

Moreover, the Weiss' web page is listing several interesting links. I like it (now in my 'Favorites').
Thanks again and enjoy your week-end.

My friend has been coming over for listens and now can't wait to put something together.  He has a nice system with a good turntable setup and a Sony SCD-1 like I used (I need to sell that nice thing before everyone discovers XXHE :) ) He's picked up external HDDs, we're looking at laptops (core2duo, 4gb ram stuff...), and now has been bouncing around trying to pick a dac.  Some have said the FF800 by itself is very good, I haven't tried it cause I'm unfamiliar with the analog outputs the FF800 has... He has a BAT preamp with rca/balanced inputs,,, but I have never seen/used the "balanced" analog outputs I see on the FF800 and wouldn't know what type of cable to use?  Anyway, at the moment, the piece of gear I'm leaning toward him getting is this:
http://www.weiss.ch/dac2/dac2.htm
If I was in the position to buy and hadn't bought my Stello dac/stereovox dig. cable/FF800, I think this is what I'd have tried.
Rumor? has it the Pro version I linked to is the same insides as the Highend version Edward linked to, and is $2500 less !!! ... anyone have any insights about this?  Any other suggestions in the $2000 range?  It seems fairly future proof being able to do 24/192...
I'm still very happy with what I've got going on (understatement of the year), and he's almost ready just to duplicate that... but I want him to try the Weiss... so I can try it hehehe.

arrggg.. more waiting
Someone busted his cantilever on his cartridge and he has to pay 1300 bucks for repair... now he wants to go cheaper and get a scott nixon usb dac... I'm going to try and hold him off from that hehe I want to hear the Weiss...
