Title: OutOfMemoryException error in 09w-5
Post by: JohanZ on December 21, 2008, 09:20:09 pm
Hi Peter,

During playback in version 09w-5 i have got a OutOfMemoryException error. After this error XX don't start anymore. Everytime when i start XX it gives this error. Even after a system reboot. Deleting Favorites.txt solves the problem. What caused this problem?

Johan

Is this different from what you had before ? (when you were "able" to create a Favorites file of 370MB !)
It looks like the same problem.

Can it be that somthing took longer than you wanted, and you clicked a Favorites link again while another one was pending, and that that initiated the real problem (things get in a loop and the file grows and grows) ?

It's the same error. I had the idea that it was caused by starting two different versions of XX at the same time. But i'll think this is not what caused it.

How do i click a favorite link? Do you mean selecting a record in the Library area?

With 09w-5, I observe the following behaviour. During playback of a (pretty long) album, it occurs to me that the physical memory used is increasing steadily until it reaches over 90%. Subsequently Engine3 crashes.
In addition I notice that occasionally between 2 tracks a very short moment of another track is played.
I hope that this feedback helps in finding and repairing the cause of the error.
BTW, SQ is excellent !
Eric.

Hi Eric,

About the crashing : is this with virtual memory (hence using a paging file) On or Off ?

Generally, you should now limit the file size loaded into memory. In other words :
With the versions before April 2008 this problem was similar (but a real problem only when virtual memory was shut off), and at that moment things were changed in the memory environment;
What happened with 0.9w-5 is that everything kind of went opposite and theoretically more memory is used because of that.

What happens now is that each larger track (compared to the earlier played tracks) will reserve additional memory, but it will never be freed (on purpose) besides a relatively small piece (100-200MB or so, which varies up and down). So, the longer you play for one session, the larger the chance you bump into an again larger file.

All is solved (if everything is working as intended) by limiting the file portions loaded into memory. When you set that to e.g. 200MB and have a 24 bit DAC, approx. 10 minutes of 16/44.1 will fit into memory and each track smaller than 10 minutes will not be cut in two (or more). Larger tracks will, but that goes without notice.

In addition I notice that occasionally between 2 tracks a very short moment of another track is played.

Yep, and as "promised" in the release notes . I have it myself once-twice per evening, but it seems kind of standard for the last track of the playlist.
Btw, what you will hear is an amount of music that fits one "buffer-size" of the DAC and it is from the 2nd second (or so) from the last track played (so, you already heard it before :)).
Since this seems a bug outside my reach somewhere, it is hard to solve. But I will ...

Thanks,
Peter

Peter,

I have that also but not with the last track... it was the second track just now.... sometime's two times with one cd.

Hi Peter,

Do you have an answer?

I still get this error. When i delete favorite.txt it works again!

No Johan, I am sorry ...
It must be related to how you use the Favorites. Something like clicking when things are being worked out from the previous click or something.

Can't you find out just when it happens ? IOW, how I can repeat your behaviour ?
Peter

Almost every day now i have this OutOfMemoryException error again during unattended playback in version 09-w8 . Deleting the favorite.text file doesn't help anymore. Starting XX gives this error again.

XXengine3.exe is still active in the taskmanager

I need to reinstall XX again in a new directory. I hope you have a solution for me PLEASE!

See logfile as attachement

Hi Johan,

I don't see any Out of memory exception ??
If you can repeat this for Bill Frisell, what happens if you throw out the picture(s) you have on him ?

Note that you well can have an Out of memory error, but it is not what you showed.
Also, please try to tell exactly what you did, because this must be importand since you seem to be the only one having this ?

When you can't get out of the loop, you can try to delete !Played.dat from your XX folder. It can't harm to delete this.
A !CurrentlyPlaying.PLXX could also be a cause. You can delete that too (at emergencies).

If you are going to tell me the sequence of things, please also try to indicate how many seconds are between two actions of yours. Example :
Selected album ABC from the Gallery, nothing seems to happen, and I pressed load again within 5 seconds because nothing seemed to happen.
Then in 4 seonds I pressed Play, because really  nothing seemed to happen anymore.

Hi Peter,

Again an Out of Memory Exception error! This time in version 09w-9b.

What i did:
1 Double click in the library area to select an Album
2 Tracks are direct loaded in the playlist
3 Selecting the play button
4 XX plays in unattended mode
5 After some tracks i get this error.
6 Music keeps playing
7 XX ends with the Wallpaper and do'nt switched back
8 I cannot start XX again.

Deleting the suggested files did not help but deleting favorites.txt helps. I noticed that several times this favorite file is 369.3xx kB big.
How do i influence the size of this file? Has it something to do with this error message?

Johan

Hi Johan,

It looks like that this might go wrong as soon as you add a Favorites entry that has a "unicode" charachter in it (and then quit XXHighEnd). Please look below.
That A from Nils Petter etc. (from your file from a while ago) might be really there in your file, or it is not and is something else. Can you please look ?

The rubbish you see beyond it, repeats for 365 MegaByte or so ...

Adding Nils Petter to the Galary has the following effect in favorites.txt:
the first time:
2;D:\Galeries\Canterbury\
4;D:\Galeries\Jazz\
1;D:\Galeries\Jazz\Nils Petter Molvær\
1;I:\Music\Jazz\
second time:
2;D:\Galeries\Canterbury\
4;D:\Galeries\Jazz\
1;D:\Galeries\Jazz\Nils Petter Molvær\
1;I:\Music\Jazz\
third time:
2;D:\Galeries\Canterbury\
4;D:\Galeries\Jazz\
1;D:\Galeries\Jazz\Nils Petter Molvær\
1;I:\Music\Jazz\

As you can see Molvaer becomes stranger and stranger.....

Again this evening an "Out Of Memory Exception error" during unattended playback.

Looking at the Favorite.txt file gives a problem with Nils Petter

1;D:\Galeries\Jazz\Nils Petter MolvÃÃÆâ etc........................................

What a stupid thing this is !

If you know about more examples (or just can create them), please let me know. If not, I can check for this sequence to happen based on that name (the sequence itself is not really repetetive as it seems).

"Adding of Nils Petter Molvaer to Favorites is not allowed - press enter to continue"

Computers ...

The problem is most likely the norwegian special chars - like Æ, Ø, Å e.g. meaning AE, OE and AA.

XX most likely doesn't handle other chars than english in favourittes?

Strangely enough it does, and you can just read them back with e.g. Notepad as originally put in. However, indeed it is true that the Favorites.txt file was not indicated as Unicode encoded, because the construction/syntax seemed not to allow for it, *and* it didn't seem necessary, as said.

A little testing showed that things went wrong at reading back. So, you can see it going wrong in that Favorites form already, after stop-start XX. Thus, unlike Notepad, the "something" that reads back from the file doesn't take Unicode for default, or whatever it is.

After finding a way afterall to tell the system to officially make a Unicode file of this, all is right now.
It will be in the next version.

I like Scandinavian Jazz music so here is another one:
1;D:\Galeries\Jazz\Esbjörn Svensson Trio\

Great that there will be a update of XX
