Title: w-8 Sound problem
Post by: Fidelio on January 19, 2009, 12:49:30 pm
The problem with w8 is that it doesn't sound good to my ears. Sticking with w5, sooo much more rich and airy sounding. w8 sounds a bit thin. I find that w5 has the best SQ of all the versions so far, with v7 close behind.

Fidelio, is that at Attended ?

I don't particulary like w8 either in Attended or Unattended. I think the difference in SQ here is negligible. The sound's characteristics is basically the same. I love w5 in both Attended and Unatt. Rythmic, full sound. w8 sounds rather canny and is muddling e.g. bass lines.

Fidelio,

Can you tell whether below XXHighEnd.exe makes a difference ?
Just copy the .exe over your current XX folder (and save the old XXHighEnd.exe).

Thanks,
Peter

I pointed of much of the same characteristics comparing V6A and W7 the other day under the SQ section. Soft bass. Not much response from that thread.

V6A is much clearer and defined than W7. And if W8 is the same PB structure as W7 the "problem" has moved on to it.

Oh. I sure wanted to, but got the idea that you were waiting yourself to be more conclusive.
So now I am going to pay attention to your posts overthere.  :)

FYI :

(and please note I wrote this before your comments about -6 and -7 being equally "worse")

09w-8a is lacking something of which I thought in advance it might change sound, although there is no way I can recognize why.
YET.
So, if it "solves" the problem for Fidelio I can start to believe that - whatever it is I left out now - indeed does matter.
Note that it would be the second time that this "thing" influences, and a second time is enough for me.

Btw, this is XXHighEnd only, which doesn't produce the sound. Certainly not with Unattended ... :secret:

I didn't hear Fidelio talk about 0.9w-6 or -7, so I assume he never tried that. If his problem is already in -6 and -7, this -8a certainly won't help a thing.

Furthermore this 0.9w-8a should help Kuo-Yao's problem with "No Track given", although I myself can still let things go wrong to that aspect.

Hmm ... I was already answering to your topic LydMekk, but then I found that what you are saying here is (or must be) unrelated to what Fidelo says. Unless you can find "your sound" in 0.9w-5. IOW, you are talking about a much older version ...

I have tried w5, 6, 7 and 8. w5 is fantastic to my ears, w8 is the most tinny and uninvolving of the lot. 6 and 7 are fine, but not up there (especially rhytmically) with w5. But something definately happened with w8.

Generally speaking, the differences are of course subtle, even between w5 and w8. But a subtle change can mean a lot regarding listening pleasure. I'll try them out some more when I have time and try to say something more meaningful if I can.

Thank you Fidelio. I will certainly try to find what may cause it. It was unintentional anyway !
