Title: Screen/Video crash with 0.9-w6
Post by: bgjohan on January 20, 2009, 04:08:30 am
Peter

Engine 3 working under 09-w6, but have problem with screen and video.
Program, including video/screen and all setting shows up after initial install.
However, after some uses video/screen crashes the program (although Engine 3 continues to play music).
After restarting program, I have lost lower settings Unattended play etc.
Video/screen stays on while I paly music, but only as long as I do not change settings (volume, playlist).
When I initiate a change, the screen/video crashes again - but music keeps om playing, if playlist untouched.

Attached some details from 2 crashes:

Title: w-8 problem video/screen
Post by: bgjohan on January 20, 2009, 04:23:57 am
Pete
My problem with 09-w8, similar to when I ran 09-w6.
Video screen crash after a few uses - lost lower settings (Unattended), but was able to set to Unattended play before lost the settings.
Three sets of info from crashes attached.

I have also found from DAC Test that my M-AUdio PCI Delta 192 (with M-Audio Beta VISTA 64x driver) only plays at 16/44.1 and 16/48. Do you think that the fact that the M-Audio Beta VISTA 64x driver is not Microsoft signed plays a matter? Do you think best to send this issue to  M-Audio Beta driver team (although I am able to play both 24/96 and 192/24 files with MediaMonkey and ASIO driver)?

Hi,

Looking at the various data you provided (very good, thanks), I see four problems.

First problem

For example your "Crash3" right above ... this is something from the OS, and in the end is normal. Ok, really "normal" it is not of course, but it is caused by the resources XXHighEnd draws for itself, not giving enough for those processes (services) not really needing it anyway. So they stop. Not that this is not really crashing, but it is how it expresses anyway.
I never found any service which is stopping this way, can harm you(r system).
Note that also services exist which make your screen turn into a windows-311 look, and you shouldn't even be bothered by that.
When these things happen, they happen because sound will be better. They don't interfere with sound anymore, and they got away because sound interfered with them. Strange story maybe, but it is so, en generally seen as beneficial.
Of course you could switch off the services concerned, and many people do. Spoolsv.exe is amongst them, if you don't want to print that is.
Note that Spoolsv.exe is just an example, and many more exist (and they may all crash one time or another).

Second problem

When you play hires files you should use the latest version and set "Split file at size" to 100MB. Otherwise too much memory will be consumed, and combined with FLAC conversion this is even worse. Note that the way XX is configured, you cannot use more than 2GB for the music files, no matter how much memory you have, and no matter it is Vista (or XP) 64.
The 2L files are extra problematic, that is, in DXD version, because they also have to be downconverted to 176400. They will play, but only at Unattended without problems.

Third problem

This is about yuor first mentioned crash, "Crash 1";
You describe this problem in a general form, which then (!) ends up in my above explanation under "First problem". However, this "First crash" problem is specific for the XXHighEnd screen, and I can't tell what you did to create that. I don't think this is a real problem because you might not be able to have it again, or otherwise once in a while. If you have it too often (to decide by yourself) of course I will solve it, but then I have to know how to mimic it.

Quote
After restarting program, I have lost lower settings Unattended play etc.

This is unrelated. Settings are stored when you quit the program in normal fashion. When you do not (like with a crash) they are not saved. Thus, this only indicates that you just changed a setting in that session.

Fourth problem

Quote
I have also found from DAC Test that my M-AUdio PCI Delta 192 (with M-Audio Beta VISTA 64x driver) only plays at 16/44.1 and 16/48. Do you think that the fact that the M-Audio Beta VISTA 64x driver is not Microsoft signed plays a matter?

I am almost sure indeed it matters. Two questions :
1. Do you see this device as "loudspeakers" *and* as SPDIF ? If the latter is not so, the driver won't be Vista compatible.
2. When you go to the Advanced page of the properties of the SPDIF (!!) device, do you there see 24/192 listed ? (if Yes it doesn't say much, but if No it sure tells that via Exclusive  Mode the device can't play over that rate. If there's only loudspeakers (see 1) this doesn't say anything (I think).

I hope this kind of answered your questions !

Pete

I have found the major problem.
After getting 09-w6 and 09-w8 working with 96/24 and 192/24 output through soundcard and speakers, I changed to (Logitech USB) earphones (as it was late and wife wanted to sleep in peace).
Apparently, when checking both SPDIF, speaker/amp out and earphones, it turned out that although both SPDIF and speaker out accepted 24/192, USB earphones was limited to 16/44.1 and 16/48.
When I reset to play through M-Audio Delta 192 PCI card and speakers, I can play 24/96, 24/192 (2L FLAC downloaded test files) as well as 16/44.1 with double and quadruple upsample.

This discovery is certainly a big relief. However, although video now working OK without additional crashes, I still have an issue with the video (missing lower Unattended settings), but that is not a major worry. I think video issue originally created by my (stupid) attempt to set DAC for 24/192 (thinking I was still routing sound through M-Audio Delta card) and play hi-res (24/96 and 24/192) FLAC files while the Logitech USB earphones only able to play max 16/48. I guess Logitech USB earphones playing through separate USB driver, and not through the M-Audio Delta 192 PCI card and driver (correct??)

I have not tried to re-install 09-w8 to fix video issue - rather I will wait for your next release and make a refresh install, which I think will adddress the video issue.
This gives me reason to look for a decent headphone amp (or DAC headphone combo) and hook up my old AKG 340 earphones to the earphone monitor (balanced) analog output from the M-Audio PCI sound card instead of the restrictive Logitech USB earphones.

Yes.

Actually I don't understand what you mean by this. "Lower Unattended settings". Can you rephrase this ?

Remaining video problem in 09-w8:
Control functions for Unattended etc. normally located in lower right part of the screen does not show up on my screen after I experienced a program crash - thus unable to access these controls (and player seem stuck in Attended mode, although set for Unattended mode prior to crash).

On another matter - if I may:
I need to migrate my laptop (ACER 8204, 32 bit Intel processor) from XP to Vista or WIN 7 in order to take advantage of XXHIGHEND Engine #3 when laptop used as a remote player (with my Vista 64x main computer as the music server). When migrating I will expand laptop memory from 2GB to 4GB (although I am aware WIN 32 bit only able to access max 3.5GB). Thankful for your thoughts whether best to go with Vista 32x (for money and with proven/tested drivers) or try out WIN7 32x (free Beta, but maybe unstable and not guaranteed Vista 32x drivers will work, although generally claimed that VISTA 32x drivers supposed to work with WIN7).
More specifically, if we set aside potential problems with using VISTA 32x under WIN7 - what are your thoughts on the pros and cons with WIN7 compared to Vista 32x?

Hi Bjorn,

Is it possible for you to post a picture of that Unattended thing ? I seem not to be able to get it otherwise.

Indeed please post separate problems in separate topics

If you plan to use your laptop as a "remote player" as you say, maybe think of RDC first;
1. You will be seeing your server on the laptop (and this will show Vista);
2. Theoretically that by itself degrades sound;
3. It could be via a Wifi connection;
4. Laptops are the WORST for music playback and good sound. Don't do it while you have the chance ! (but the RDC solution is ok by itself and can only be very smallish related to SQ).

From 2GB to 4GB will bring you 1GB net more ar most. Could be 400MB only. For XX useage that is.

Right now I really wouldn't know about pros or cons with Windows 7. I didn't look into it a single bit because of a little bit lack of time. :)
Maybe others know more. Sorry !

Not that I ever heard of this, now I understand better. To me this looks like a rights problem.
Did you apply the things mentioned in here : Vista Users ... prepare yourselves ... (http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=209.0) ?

If not, you *must* do it. But if so :

Did you ever drag the borders of each of the three panes ? I mean, there is this large space on the left; did you do that ?

Quote
does not show up on my screen after I experienced a program crash

Exactly what kind of crash is/was this ? (I know, you mentioned various, but I don't know which one belongs to this notice of yours).

And to be certain : You set Unattended. Played a bit Unattendedly, bring up XXHighEnd, at some times a crash occurs, and then the Unattended setting is reset to Attended (derived from Play and XXHighEnd stays) ?
Are you shure you don't encounter messages at startup of XXHighEnd ? There shouldn't be any, except right after a new install ...

I hope this all is not too confusing.
Peter

I think I can do similar by myself :

Look at the first picture below. I dragged the left pane large (a bit like you have it). Note this can be done with the split bar the mouse points at. Once at this size, quitting XX and restarting it, hides the area you indeed are missing. It is under the picture (and an anomaly I apparently cause). Now drag the bar again. And voilá there the area is back (second picture).

This may not be your case, and certainly Unattended won't switch to Attended because of this.

?

A. 09-w8
I think you were right that extended the screen too far created some problems. However, re-adjusting the screen size did not solve the problem.

B. 09-w9b
I waiting for a new version to try out and did load 09-w9b over the week end. Unfortunately, I am still experiencing soem video issues.

1. Although 09-w9b supposedly included a fix for the disappearing Quality slider, I never had a Quality slider in 09-w9b.
2. I am still experiencing the start-up issue, where I have to minimize the program contol panel and open it agon to get the full panel visible - see two attachments.
3.I still experience the problem of the program control panel cloosing and disappering once music is fully loaded and starts to play. Although music (Engine 3) is still playing, I then have to open the program all over again to get the program control panel visible. However, although visible, the program control panel is static; the bottom arrow is stuck showing the location of the music play at the place where music was playing when program control panel opened the second time. Similarly, even if playing the next song (Unattended), the control panel stays static at the song playing when control panel opened for the second time. In addition, if I stop play and manully move to playing another song (or playlist), the control panel shuts down and disappears, when the new song is fully loaded and starts to play.
This control panel shut-down, disappearance is the same when palying CD FLAC files or hi-res FLAC files
On the other hand, I have nothing at all to complain about re. playing various music, including hi-res files - it is only the video/ control panel that is a bit of a problem. However, I very much prefer a player that plays music beautifully with some viseo issues to a perfect video/control panel playing music at inferior quality.

Hi Bjorn,

The Q sliders are under the QControl tab. If not, please show me a screen copy of that.

To avoid misunderstandings : I did not do anything about the other things. I am sorry you got the impression I had. Those disappearing controls I will solve though.

Now about your disappearing "control panel" ... I think you may have missed what Unattended is about ...
With Unattended everything disappears, except the music. And it certainly is not the idea to immediately bring up XXHighEnd (= "the control panel") once it disappeared. You should only bring it up when you want to change things, like playing another track, or want to stop.
Knowing this will change you life ... :)

I must say, I see many things wrong with your screen. I have been looking at it the other day already, but all what I see I can't copy. For instance the pictures at the right. Why are half small and half large ??
Dit you perhaps change the font size in the PC ? (not that I can see you did).
Can you please do this : minimize XXHighEnd to the taskbar, rightclick on that taskbar icon and click the X which appears. Thus, close it directly from the taskbar. Now restart, and then make a screencopy for me. Thus, don't change the panel sizes first.

re-adjusting the screen size did not solve the problem.
The latter I just told resets all.

Never mind this. I tried it yesterday, it was designed like it, but today at working on your problem of the disappearing controls at the bottom, somehow it doesn't work anymore. If you see the initial size (like after an upgrade) come up after this procedure, please send the screencopy indeed. But if not, never mind.

Note that the notch buttons should stay above the slider (which is only one thing I see wrong at your screen copy). If you can tell me how you do it that they move to the left of the slider, or when that happens ... please let me know.

The thing about the disappearing controls is solved and will be in the next upgrade. For the other things I really need you.
(but trust me, this must be about some very strange (font ?) setting you applied yourself somewhere. *Or* a special hocus pocus trick you apply to get the lot in that stage. :))

Although I can't get it from this text, there *is* something wrong with the cursor position at bringing up XXHighEnd again. At least for WAV files ...

1. Unattended - thanks for the clarification, I thought Unattended only meant that the program moved from song to next song in the playlist w/out the need for manual instruction. When running in Unattended mode, the whole program disappeared, i.e. was not available from the bottom task bar in Vista 64.
Running in Attended mode, I can easily minimize the program to the bottom task bar, call the program up again and make changes, Start playing again w/out issues and even have the progressing bar working. Only remaining sign of any problem is that I seem to have lost some of the progression bar markers.

2. Album covers as jpg pictures; the loading on the right hand only occurs when the album does not have a picture associated with it and XXHIGHEND seems to display all available album pictures (jpg) available. I have attached a print screen from an albun with jpg attached. Picture appears a bit small, but is otherwise functioning normally.

3. Problem of screen overlay at startup - nothing much to worry about, it fixes itself if I minimize and re-open the program in full screen.

4. Quality setting; I have played wih setting at high Quality (24) assuming that my PC (dual processors, 6GB of RAM) has enough power to handle such a setting. Thankful for your comments on this, if you disagree or would like to suggest other Quality setting.

Quality setting:
In my previous post, I commented on setting to 24. However looking back at the program I see that it was NOT Quality set to 24, rather Q1=parameter 24 in 09-w8.
However, in 09-w09b the Q1 Parameter setting is missing - this is what I was referring to as Quality setting missing - sorry my mistake (causing confusion).
Thus my question: Has Q1 slider been eliminated in 09-w09b, or am I in fact missing something?

The new Q settings can be found under their own tab now called QControl.
It will be a long time until I post any feelings about them, but
4,8,1,0,2
Then again, those numbers will change faster than two shakes of a lambs tail.

I really like having all the Qs under the tab QControl.  I think there was only confusion because experienced XXHE people were looking for it in the usual place.  New users, who would naturally explore XXHE, will find it easily under the QControl tab, and Vets of XXHE just need to have their attention directed to it.  I for one, hope you don't move it back; you may find it gives you some layout control later on.

sounding very full and rich; i likea

To me it somehow doesn't feel right. Q1 is just working and doing a kind of certain job. Now, newcomers don't know this. So what will happen ? they will slide Q1 along with the others. Q2-Q5 so far don't make much sense. Q1 does.
