Title: .9x-5---No Sound
Post by: boleary on March 21, 2009, 05:10:07 am
Figured out the Hot Key but with or without it I can't get .9x-5 to work. When I hit play I hear a click and the lower slider moves but no sound. If I turn on 9x-4 it works fine. All the settings in 9x-5 are the same as 9x-4. Any suggestions? (BTW I finally got Vista an am blown away by Engine 3. Thanks!)

The first think I would say is that you didn't select the proper sound device (which now not only is possible but also necessary). But then I don't like the click you mentioned ...

But could it be the sound device ? (Settings Area).

After installing XXHD 0.9x-5 the same for me, no sound. The output setting for me is always Luidsprekers(Prodigy HD2). I am using a soundcard. I changed this setting one time and back to it's original setting to get the sound back.

Still won't work. The output setting is correct. Strangely, if I selected engine #1 or #2 in 9x-5 it works. I thought maybe #3 was corrupted so I redownloaded the Zip. Then everytime I opened the program and played a file with engine #3, the program shut down. If I open the program and choose engine #1 or #2 it works. Now, when I choose #3 I hear a little pop and the lower slider moves but still no sound. A couple of times in this process, whenever I opened 9x--5, it changed the sample rate in my M-Audio Audiophile driver from 96 to 44.1 which was then not compatible with my player settings. Resetting the M-Audio to 96 doesn't solve the problem. Again, if I turn off 9x--5 and turn on 9x-4 all is well.

My system is a cheap Dell Vostro with music on external 500 gig WD drive via firewire to a USB external M-Audio Audiophile external soundcard/dac to a MSB Goldlink dac.

Haha, all my taskbar icons disappear every time I press play or skip song in x-5. Have to bring up the task manager to bring them back. Weird bug?

Not a bug. Read the release notes in the download section. The task bar is supposed to disappear to save system resources for the sacred task of playing music. If you run the hotkey program described in the release notes section of 9x-05 you won't have to use task manager. If you don't like the fact that your task bar disappears you should run 9x-04 instead of 05.

Still no sound out of 05 for me....... :(

I have the same problem with no sound but only through the dac. I do get sound if I choose the Primary Driver setting in which the music comes through the laptop computer only. I am using Engine #3 in both cases.

Ok, something is clearly wrong with the sound for some or many. Can someone with the problem please show all the sound (playback) devices he has (ad indicate which is the one you want for playback) ?
In the mean time, setting the sound device wanted as the Primary (default), and next select "Primary (defualt) Sound Device" (similar) which would be the first one listed - it should work. But if again not, play say so !

Thanks ... and sorry !
Peter

You mean the icons only, right ? but if the whole Taskbar, boleary is correct.

Peter, I'm not sure what you mean by show all the sound/playback devices and indicate which I want for sound playback. The following are listed in my settings output tab (sure wish I knew how to take a screen shot....):

Primary Sound Device
S/PDIF (Audiophile USB)
Line1/2 (Audiophile USB
Speakers/Headphones (Sigma Tel HD Audio Codec)
Digital OutPut Device (Sigma Tel HD Audio Codec)

I have S/PDIF (Audiophile USB) set as my default in Control Panel/Sounds. I have tried setting the output in XX to S/PDIF (Audiophile USB) and I Have tried the primary device setting with the S/PDIF set as the default and it won't work either way. However, engines 1 & 2 do work.

As I just installed Vista yesterday and, since then can't wipe the sh*t-eating grin off my face cause my tunes sound so good  :), I am happy to use 9x-4 while my the 9x--5 problem gets worked through. Thanks Peter.

Just read my last post and thought, perhaps, one thing might not be clear. The output sound device I want to use is the M-Audio S/PDIF.

.......which is the same as the S/PPDIF (Audiophile USB). Whew!

(sure wish I knew how to take a screen shot....):

If you look to the top right of your keyboard you will see a key labelled 'Print Screen' ( or similar ). It is normally written above a secondary function ( in the case of the keyboard I'm typing this on it is marked 'Sys Rq' ), and this implies you need to hold down the 'Shift' key for it work.

If you now hold down the shift key and press that 'Print Screen' key you should get an image of the screen copied to your clipboard buffer.

Now open up the Paint program ( normally found in the Accessories section under All Programs ), and you will be presented with a blank canvas. If you now select the 'Paste' function under the 'Edit' menu at the top, you should see your screen dump appear. From here you can simply 'Save As' a .jpg file. Paint was some rudimentary editing functions if you wish to further 'Cut & Paste' specific sections of your screen dump. I use Photoshop for that though and can also be used in the initial 'Paste' to grab that clipboard buffer.

Hey Russ, thanks for the instructions on the screen shot. I will definately give it a go.

I notice from your signature that your running Aural Organs. What version are they, pre or post 1960?  :)

Haven't been able to stop listening to music for two days!

They were made in England circa late '52 and exported to OZ in early '59. The upper frequency response has waned a little over the years but are generally holding up quite well  :soundsgood:

Regs,

Can anyone with the problem, please, ASAP run a DAC Test (not the Shared Mode one) and look whether the report coming from it indeed shows the Sound Device chosen at the top ?

Remember, the DAC test should be fed with a (dummy) normal 16/44.1 WAV file (hence select that for playback in the Playlist).

Without this information I can't tell whether the wrong device gets selected, or whether just something else is wrong. Because of the "click" thing people mention, I guess the latter, but I must be sure.

Thanks !
Peter

Oh, I'm sorry.

In the Settings Area there is a "Dac is" combobox. Normally this should be set to what your DAC can dig. At the bottom is the one but last option "DAC Test". Choose that. Now play a 16/44.1 file. After a small minute a report shows up. At the second line the Sound Device is listed. If that one is not the one you chose, it is wrong.

Again, thanks.
Peter

Ah Johan, thank you.

But is it correct or not ?

Luidsprekers (QVE for Prodigy HD2 (WDM))

I can't judge ...

Edit : Ah, it shows in the screen copy. So I guess it is not the same, right ?

I went back tried the .9x-5 version and the USB DAC (USB AUDIO DAC) came up as my chosen device but no signal to the dac but I was getting sound from the laptop speakers. I get no signal to the DAC no matter what device is selected.  Usually the PC volume control shuts off when the DAC is plugged in the USB port but aparently not with this version.

In the settings area you can see Output Luidsprekers(Prodigy HD2). Something in the backgroud has changed this setting to Luidsprekers (QVE for Prodigy HD2 (WDM)).

After a reset the sound i back again. see dactest results

Okay, thanks to Russ am able to take screen shots; but can't figure out how to insert them here. Help...... Sorry. the pictures will make it easier to explain. When I hit the insert button it doesn't take me to explorer browser so I can select a picture. What to do? Again, am educable (but just barely!)

Will try to explain without pictures:

1. S/PDIF (Audiophile USB) was selected as the output device when I ran the DAC Test.

2. Second Line of DAC Test Report was: Line 1/2 (Audiophile USB) which is wrong. That is the Anologue output device.

3. 1 and 2 above were taken with .9--05. However same test taken with version .9--04 gave the following in the second line of the report: 04B2FCF0  (Thats weird because .9--04 works with engine #3.)

It is clear now without pictures. :) But may you need them : At posting there's an Additional Options at the lower left corner. Click the + in front of it and a part with "Attach" appears. Click the "Browse" behind it, and from there you can select a before saved picture.

Again during sound comparison, i lost sound in 09x-5.
I deleted in Vista Sound the option Luidsprekers (QVE for Prodigy HD2 (WDM)) See attachment. Restart the system and again no sound. Did the DACtest again. Surprise...the output is now (SPDIF) (Prodigy HD2). For me its the end of 09x-5. Back to the privious version. :blob8:

Below is a new combo (0.9x-5a) XXHighEnd.exe - XXEngine3.exe. Unzip it over your current 0.9x-5 folder and let me know whether it helps.

It should ...

Hi Peter,

The 0.9x-5a seems to be working now, I only had a brief moment to turn on the system and the DAC is getting signal now. I will have more time later to listen. Thank-you for getting it resolved quickly.

For me it's the end of 09x-5.

........back again on 09x-5a with sound...so far.

First impression: is it possible that it sounds better than 09x-5? I've compared 09x-5 with 09v-7. In 09v-7 all the small detaills draw your attention. It give's a bigger involvement i think. More impact of the cymbals... The first soundwise impression of 09x-5a is good.

The No Sound issue is now solved in 0.9x-5b.
