1126  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Tube rolling without tubes on: October 28, 2011, 02:42:04 pm
Itīs really interesting how the sound changes as you get up or down the volume. I havenīt associated it to the SFS size however, but probably boleary is right. Hey, youīre really an expert in SFS and volume control and not only driving blue cars!.

By the way, take a look at the car, ok itīs not a blue car and I have not money enough to buy one, but a few laps on the track were not bad at all...

Peter, yes, NOS tube rolling, what else!
1127  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Tube rolling without tubes on: October 28, 2011, 12:05:35 am
During 20 years I used valve (or tube) amplification until I was tired of tube rolling looking for the "perfect sound". Then I decided to live with the imperfection and to work less. So I took the solid state route, I went even further and got sticked to the class D amplification. Iīm happy with the sound, spend less money and now listen to more music than before, but...but the old tube sound, once in a while, knocks at my door. I found a way to open this door and let the tube sound come in. How? By changing the SFS values.

Based on bolearyīs settings, which for me and so far are the best settings Iīve ever tested, I tried different SFS values, from the minimum 350 to the maximum 430 - the latter was the value Peter used for the NOS1 (no USB).

The boleary setting with a SFS value of 350 in my system produces a sound that I would call "exact", what I mean is that it is a sound with no frills, great sound but a bit dry for my taste.

Increasing the SFS to the maximum of 430 (I could reach even 500 but thatīs too much of everything) the sound is a little dense, thick, it is like if you use something like a WE300B in combination with other sweet tubes, nice sound but too colored. Nothing against the 300B or other tubes in a well implemented amplifier, just as an example.

Going down in the SFS setting Iīve found that the best sound is around 7 to 10 points above the 350 boleary value. So, for example, with 360 I found a sound thatīs natural, well delineated with great soundstage and not at all aggressive.

All in all a great way to rolling tubes without tubes.

Hi Bert,

RCA output: 1.5V RMS (-3dbFS relative to normal Full Scale)

XLR output: 2.7V RMS (+3dbFS relative to normal Full Scale)

I sent you the manual via mail to the contact you have in your web site.

Thanks Joachim,
I have a Technics SP10MKII from the times I owned a music bar, still have also a Thorens 160, but I sold my great TW and my phono preamp. I donīt have a big Lp collection, maybe around 500 that are worthwhile, some of them also in cd. That means that I donīt want to invest a big amount in hardware or software, what Iīm looking for is an acceptable way to transfer the vinyl to digital wav files at a reasonable cost.

Christoffer, I found this that talks about the RIAA, itīs very cheap and even sell a TT, I donīt know about the quality, however:

Once I have the TT how can I do it?, I mean digitizing vinyl

Thanks, Juan

Also there is not all that much reason to "utilize" an easy analogue to digital transfer like that USB internal device will do it for you. But of course you will need some other capturing device then.

Peter

Ok, maybe thereīs a good idea around on how to do it with the best possible quality.

Could anyone recommend a TT with USB for transferring my LP collection to the computer?.
I sold my TT some time ago and now Iīd like to transfer the LPs to the computer. Any recommendation about the TT that could do it directly to the hard drives (WAV files)?.

Just in case some of you donīt know other points of view, mostly about different materials and even no boxes at all, here they go:

From Altman Mirco Machines:

http://www.mother-of-tone.com/mother.htm

http://www.mother-of-tone.com/lacquer.htm

Talking about lacquer we all know that the good concert pianos are finished with many lacquer layers. My speakers also follow this path and they have several lacquer layers applied.

Reading the previous TNT reviews Iīve found this interesting article, "Wood is good":

Hi Peter, have a nice weekend, this is the first attempt to find out about what youīre talking about:

http://www.polycrystal.com/pc-mainframe.htm

And this could be the TNT review (four parts):

http://www.tnt-audio.com/accessories/vibra_iso_pt1_e.html

http://www.tnt-audio.com/accessories/vibra_iso_pt2_e.html

http://www.tnt-audio.com/accessories/vibra_iso_pt3_e.html

If itīs not what you are talking about itīs very interesting to read anyway.

1137  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: HDCD on/off changes the sound on z0.9-6-1? on: October 14, 2011, 10:09:52 am
When the music reproduced is HDCD thereīs a volume change in playback, so that's easy to detect, also if it is HDCD the logo appears while charging it.

I had the feeling that the soundstage was bigger with different discs that were not HDCD. I donīt know, maybe it was a false impression, I'll look more closely

I'm not sure anyone wants me company to play the same song ten times (or more). This hobby is for loners

Well, once in a while...maybe
1139  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / HDCD on/off changes the sound on z0.9-6-1? on: October 13, 2011, 08:42:28 pm
With z0.9-6-1 I notice a difference in sound when HDCD is activated vs when it is not. Iīm talking about music that was not originally HDCD, about music recorded with HDCD I donīt know yet.
When HDCD is activated I find a bigger soundstage and the bass is deeper and tighter.
I know we talked about it sometime before but now it seems to me quite evident. Is it possible that the sound of the no HDCD records could be affected just because the HDCD is on?

Peter, the volume with unattended works fine now, although Alt + D occasionally fails.

Still some tics in between tracks

Btw, I confirm the excellence of bolearyīs settings
