256  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Windows 10 build 10074 expiration on: September 20, 2015, 03:33:51 pm

Then, the real problem itīs not only to make the final W10 to sound as good as the v10074, the problem also will be if we can or can not to stop the automatic OS updates. If we canīt stop the updates weīll have a permanent instability for what is important to us: the XXHE sound quality.

Hi Juan,

within the W10 pro (build 10240) you can stop/avoid any update.
(for an audio PC not connected to the internet)

Joachim

Joachim, then the problem would be "only" to make it sound as good as the v10074.

PS. Take a look in this link to Are the automatic updates good or bad?:
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/windows-10-update-everything-you-need-to-know/
I just read the link you provide. I am unsure about the privacy and what lies behind MS "showed intentions" for the moment. That is why I prefer to wait for a time and see what others will say about standard Windows 10 before jumping into it for good with my music PC and my all purpose PC... Even it I decide to go with it, I still have backups of my previous Windows versions (Windows 7 and Windows Cool - just in case.

Alain

Alain, I also have those W8 and W7 backups but the sound of the v10074 is so good...
Hi Juan,

From what I understand now, you changed the date in the BIOS and Windows was in Min OS when you booted after ? It could very well be that Windows is unable to verify the system date through that hypothetical file that I assume to exist. But like you say, we will know this when October 1st arrives Happy This may explain why the date change in BIOS worked for you Happy

Maybe if you go back in Normal OS mode, you will have your answer ? Then, going back to Min OS and then changing the date again in BIOS, all will work like the first time ?

Even so, I would suggest to use the "date" command under the command line - that in Normal OS mode. This will ensure that the changing to the latest date will not occur. Normal OS would seem to be a stronger way, but I could be wrong of course...

Regards,

Alain

Alain, where can I find how "to use the "date" command under the command line - that in Normal OS mode". I missed it.

Regards,
Juan

Alain, once I read today the question I asked you yesterday I realized that it was not easy to understand. Your previous post seems to explain quite well the different ways for the OS to control the date.
What I wanted to say is that if we change the date in MinOS, are we stopping the command that counts the dates? If the only thing we are changing when we change the date in MinOS is the notification of the expiration date but not the real countdown, then we are not solving the issue.
Iīm afraid that it will be difficult to know until October 1th.

But letīs think that we canīt stop the countdown, which it seems to me quite probable. Then, the real problem itīs not only to make the final W10 to sound as good as the v10074, the problem also will be if we can or can not to stop the automatic OS updates. If we canīt stop the updates weīll have a permanent instability for what is important to us: the XXHE sound quality. That was the reason to stop the updates in the previous OS. In that case, probably Peter will be forced to work in a specific OS for XXHE. That could be a titanic task but... who said fear?

Regards,
Juan

Hi David,

The reason why you do not see the message is because you are in Minimized OS... I checked yesterday by going back in Normal OS and then I saw the message.

Hey Alain,  does it mean that there is a clock in the SO that is running without taking into consideration the date but instead a certain amount of days? What is the sense to change the date in that case?

Regards,
Juan

This is how I did it: First I installed W10 from a cd without connecting the Music PC to Internet at any time. With Windows10 present date I started XXHighEnd like the usual way. Then in Minimized mode I restarted from the stop button. From there I accessed to the  bios where I changed the date to 2012. I saved the  changes and exit. Started again XXHighEnd and from then on I always used the stop right click button to restart or shut down the pc. This way and so far it preserves the 2012 date. I never connected the Music PC to Internet neither changed the Minimized mode. I haven't registered W10 either.

I set also the date from two years back in the  bios and so far no problem at all,  even if I reboot or shut down the pc. Perhaps it is due that I always do it from XXHighEnd (right click on the stop button)

I understand you have tested 1.04 vs 1.03 (103tss renamed) using XXHighEnd as the only player and have not found differences in SQ. Is that correct?

Hi Juan,

No, that is not correct. I use 1.04 alright and used 1.03 prior to that, but I never watched for a possible change in SQ (which wasn't to be expected anyway). So I don't know.

Peter

Ok thanks Peter, then Iīll try to test both drivers to see if there are differences in SQ. From what I've read about the installation of the 1.04 driver I think these are the steps to follow, is there anything else to consider?

I see that almost everyone installs the 1.04 with apparent improvements in SQ...

Juan, emphasis is mine and - No. I see only one, unless I include myself which would be a very wild guess. But it could be.
My remark could be about symantics only.

And the "everybody" who installs the driver, is almost everybody without knowing why. Don't ask me the why. Happy
Most part will be about confusement and how AT FIRST 1.04 was necessary for XXHighEnd 2.xx.
But with the Driver103.tst not any more.

But there sure can be a reason : using other players. Could be movie players (like I use MPC) or other audio players.

So XXHighEnd is self supporting and can do without the 1.04 Driver.

WATCH OUT :
When 1.04 is installed, the Driver103.tst MUST be renamed to Driver103.tss again, or otherwise larger ticks will be your share when the sampling rate changes.

I hope it is clear somewhat ... Wink
Peter

Thanks Peter, then, if I understand you well, with my system configuration (I donīt use other player than XXHE), do not need to install the 1.04 driver even with regard to an improvement in SQ compared to 1.03 (103tst renamed). In other words, the only reason to change to the 1.04 driver would be in case of using other player and, talking about what matters to me personally, I understand you have tested 1.04 vs 1.03 (103tss renamed) using XXHighEnd as the only player and have not found differences in SQ. Is that correct?

Notice that in the end you don't really need the 1.04 Driver (when you use XXHighEnd). Renaming the Driver103.tss to Driver103.tst will do the job ...

Peter

Hi Peter,

I am confused about which driver to use. As you say if we rename the Driver103.tss is not necessary to install the 1.04. That's what I did and that's why I never installed the 1.04 driver.
Does that mean that the 1.03tss is the same as the 1.04?
I see that almost everyone installs the 1.04 with apparent improvements in SQ...

Ok, thanks Joachim. Anyway, Iīll take into account your observations, we'll see if anyone can compare the two versions.

Hi Joachim, thanks for your W10 test. I'm not sure if at any time you have tested also the 10074 version, if so, I would like know how you compare the two versions.

Best regards,
Juan

I liked the idea of Joachim foam footers so I couldnīt resist to try it. When I went to buy the foam I squeezed it with my fingers and I thought that it was too soft for the weight of the NOS1. Then I saw next to the foam a corrugated plastic tube which was also flexible, not only longitudinally but also vertically. I thought that putting the tube into the foam may harden a bit what could be an excessive softness without losing flexibility.

I tested first the foam without the corrugated tube, the same way did Joachim, and I noticed that the sound lost the excessive emphasis on the upper midrange that gave the bamboo footers, but at the same time the sharpness of the bamboo footers was lost in some degree. Then I put the blue tube (seems made especially for NOS1 ;-) within the foam and the sound was much more balanced, recovering the sharpness but in this case without apparent distortion or the overemphasis that I saw in the upper mids.

Iīm using under the NOS1a two bamboo boards and one ikea board (I think is beech) and the bamboo footers on the floor. Hey!, I love this kind of tweaks. The cost of the foam footers including the "NOS1a blue" tube can be about 3€ and Iīam convinced that can rival other audiophiles footers of bizarre prices.

So, congratulations Joachim for your idea and I hope the little sophistication added by me is useful as well.

Hi Juan,
At this moment I am merely still in the stage of observing SQ. And to be more honest, I am not even there ... holiday

But in the end, yes (a HDD/SSD or maybe USB stick, not a CD/DVD).

Regards,
Peter

Thatīs ok Peter, enjoy your vacation.

Hi Peter,

Some time ago you mentioned that maybe you could make a CD with Windows 10 Insider Preview build 10074 and a way to install the OS on the ram. Are you already selling the cd or thinking about it?

Juan
