301  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: New NOS1 dedicated PC. I am quite terrified. Help if you can!! on: April 24, 2015, 12:40:21 pm
Rakesh (and those interested),

Trying to help a bit more...
Alain sent me this link where can be found general information about the world of PC audio in a quite didactic way.
http://www.thewelltemperedcomputer.com/index.html

However, for specific information regarding our XXHighEnd/NOS1 based system, this (our) forum remains the essential reference.

302  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: New NOS1 dedicated PC. I am quite terrified. Help if you can!! on: April 24, 2015, 10:12:46 am

I came very close to just giving up and simply try and order Peter's tested and proven solution. There were however a couple of issues. Quite apart from the cost involved, I really did not want to be tied up to the Asrock X79 motherboard...I wanted to buy some relatively inexpensive processors and upgrade to something more decent eventually from the current V3 Haswell generation (generally more cores for less power consumption). Ideally, I would have liked to move away from Sata III drives, use up and coming tech like USB3.1, maybe Thunderbolt II to connect to a NAS, use really fast PCIe based "NVME" hard drives to boot from, reduce power consumption and increase core count by using CPUs like the Xeon E5-2650LV3. Ideally I wanted a bigger case since clearly that would enable better and more efficient cooling and open up the possibility of a dual cpu LGA2011-3 motherboard....
...I however know my limitations and whilst I have a better idea of what I want to achieve and how to get there, I know that I need and will seek help....

Best rgds
Rakesh

Rakesh,

In my opinion the use of a computer as an audiophile source is still in its childhood. If you are planning to use components so different than the ones used by the majority of the people here, then you are a pioneer and in some sense that means that are us the ones who will learn from your experience. As an example, if you are planning to use USB3.1 or Thunderbolt must be you who tell us about your experience with it.
Perhaps with the intention of having the latest you are going too far with the use of so very different parts and as a result will be hard for us to help you. It does not mean of course that you canīt try different configurations or components but I always would use otherīs experience as reference. The more optimized computers to use with XXHighEnd and NOS1, that I know, are Peterīs, and with some differences and modifications those of Nick, Mani, Scroobius ...

Kind regards,
Juan

Hi Rakesh, if I were you and wanted to build a computer what Iīd do is to take a look to the signature of others and especially to Peterīs signature.

If you already have some components that you intend to use go to the window search in the upper right part of this forum to put the keyword and see what others think.

For example if you are looking for LGA2011 you'll find this (just an example): http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=3063.msg33225#msg33225

On the other hand if someone knows something specific about your questions for sure will tell you. If not, ask again  Wink

Juan

Hi Rakesh, you have two ways, buy Peterīs PC and forget about the hassle to build it or ask whatever you want to know and anyone will try to help you to build it yourself.

Kind regards,
Juan
306  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Since using the Blaxius there is some hum in my speakers on: April 07, 2015, 02:17:09 pm
Thanks Peter, I'll check everything you suggested looking also to the manual to see if with some help I can fix the problem. The hum is faint but audible when the ear is near the speaker, however the sound is still fantastic.

Juan
307  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Since using the Blaxius there is some hum in my speakers on: April 07, 2015, 01:30:41 pm
Hi Peter, since Iīm using the Blaxius cables my speakers have a light noise like a radio frequencie hum. This was not happening with the previous xlr cables. I wonder if other people have had this same problem and if could be solved with an extra insulation sheath in the Blaxius without altering the electronic values of the cable.

308  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: New Phasure Modular Distinct D/A converter on: April 05, 2015, 10:34:55 pm
At this point and after the comment from Peter I see no contradiction in the path he has chosen. On the one hand the susceptible updates to be applied to NOS1a will be applied, on the other hand he has a new research and development of a new dac and it must go its own way.
The ones who want or can afford the new dac will do fine buying it. Those who feel comfortable and satisfied with the sound of NOS1a and prefer maybe some more rest without the need to get involved in a more marked process of upgrades and changes will stay with the NOS1a.
At this moment, without knowing what will be the new offer I could not ensure 100% which will be my position.

Am I wrong or there is still hope for the NOS1a?

Luckily, yes, there is still hope...as the NOS1a will not be discontinued...When something comes up for an upgrade it will just be offered as usual...

Great news Peter

this DAC will be a game changer.

Not only a game changer but it gives the feeling of leaving in the dust everything done so far with the NOS1a-Blaxius-Clairixa. Was it the idea? certainly not, but those seem to be the consequences. Donīt get me wrong Peter, of course you have the right to terminate a project and start another. Maybe it canīt be possible to make further improvements in the NOS1a, but that sounds frustrating and certainly a big surprise. I always thought that all the improvements could be done inside the NOS1 chassis.

For this new project looks like we will need a new (or almost) complete system: new dac, new amps and in some cases new speakers (mine are auto-amplified).

If it is so, and Iīm not wrong, there are only two alternatives to the current owners of NOS1/NOS1a: a. stick with the NOS1/NOS1a and forget the new "Phasure Modular Distinct", then resign ourselves without subsequent developments or b. leave in a corner the NOS1/NOS1a with a big drop in the resale price and embrace a new project in evolution (for a while).

In my case, I'm afraid I'll have to wave the white flag and stay where I am and maybe work in the music pc, which at least is still an area that needs improvement.

When I asked what was the ultimate goal of this new project it was obvious that always the aim is to have a better sound. What I meant was, as set out in the lines above, if you were talking about a new system that renders obsolete and out of play the NOS1a.

Am I wrong or there is still hope for the NOS1a? I see you continue with the NOS1 sales, then maybe I'm not understanding this issue correctly.

Regards,
Juan
311  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: New NOS1 = ? on: April 04, 2015, 01:00:14 pm
Peter, it is being difficult for me to follow you. A new amp? for what? to replace the Gainclone you use with your Orelo? Those amplifiers would be included in the NOS1 chassis or I am wrong?
What is the ultimate goal of these new projects? I do not speak about to get a better sound but about what kind of system configuration you are looking for. A simple squeme would help.

Sorry in case Iīm not understanding anything, you know that I am of those who have the hardest head with respect to the technical side.

Juan

Look I'm making a complaint. I'm very worried that xxhighend has slipped down the ladder of innovation due to, too many distractions on Peter's time, cables, NOS updates and now Leggo NOS DAC's.

Gosh I read on TCA yesterday Jplay has a new version out. I'm going to be tempted to try it, what if its better than Xxhighend?

Is this another joke? Today is April 2

Hi Maxi, you are invited to visit me but also once in a while I go back to Madrid, next time I'll let you know and take with me the NOS1a.  Wink

I did not have time to read the last post from Joachim before the conversation about voodoo disappeared. However I have to say that in my opinion it's healthy to discuss all the issues openly, even if they produce some friction.
We are here to talk about whether what we hear is pleasant or not, and, in any case, how to improve it. Some use the technical means to measure and others, like me, use only their ears. With this in mind I have to say that I've never read in this forum anything that goes against the interests of Peter. So, let me humbly recommend calm.
