376  Ultimate Audio Playback / Music Storage and convenient playback / Re: Network storage on: December 05, 2014, 12:15:52 pm
I was planning to build also a similar network so it could be also a big help for me.

What I´m going to use is a laptop as music server with a USB hub with several hhd with music. This laptop is connected to the Music Pc and to the router.

My questions are:

Following the same schematic as KnB, can I use a laptop connected to a USB hub with some hhd with music as a music server?

What software must be in the laptop in case I don´t want to use a remote tablet? Do I have to install TeamViewer in this case in the laptop? Any advantage if I don´t use a remote tablet (in SQ I mean?

377  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: More priase for the NOS1a :-) on: December 01, 2014, 06:56:26 pm
The differences in favor of NOS1a regarding NOS1 are very obvious, they basically refer to what others have already mentioned, a larger and more coherent sound stage, better defined and deeper bass, mids and highs with more presence and smoothness, etc. But in my experience the most striking finding has been meeting for the first time with the wide sweet spot, the wide listening area where you can hear both speakers as a whole while you walk around the room. It gives the feeling that if you change the listening position can still hear equally both speakers. The speakers disappear in the sense that you can´t locate its exact position. However although this effect is surprising, still if one gets the perfect center, the sound is perceived a bit more defined.

Although the differences in between the two NOS are clear from the start I must say that I did not noticed a major jump in SQ with the NOS1a until I did not make two important changes:

First, I put the last recommended settings by Peter and not the ones Peter has in his signature as I did before.

Second, I set the Peter recommended settings for the bios, although as I have a different mb I could not use all of his settings. I could set, however, the CPU ratio to 12 and some other things.

I mentioned in some other post that if let the bios control the speed of the fans if it had influence in the SQ, finally I can say that it does. When the fan speed is controlled by PWM it makes a metallic sound and a less cohesive sound stage that appears as divided into parts.

In summary, the NOS1a is an important step forward compared to the NOS1. Here I, like others, add my congratulations to Peter and Cisca for the great work done.

Now I hope to try very soon the Blaxius modification I've already ordered.

Kind regards,
Juan

Thanks Peter, after some more tests I´m not so sure that the PMW has not influence in the SQ. I have to test it for more time to confirm it definitively. What I´d really like is to build a fanless PC. I´ll be aware on others that are building it that way.

Juan

Hi Peter,

I´d like to know if now with the NOS1a is still important to not use PMW (Pulse-width modulation) that control the fan´s speed by the motherboard. I tried to let the mb to control the fans speed setting it to "Silent" that reduces the speed as low as 250rpm in the CPU fan which makes it really silent, of course the temperature of the CPU rises until 40ºC (while looking at the bios) although when XXHE is playing the temperature goes down again to 33 or 34ºC (I´m using the same XTweaks as you, Peter). So, the temperature of the CPU is not a problem using that Silent setting (max. CPU temperature allowed is 70ºC). What I like to know, as I say, is if in your opinion now with the "isolated" NOS1a the modulation of the fans by the mb could influence the SQ or not.

Personally I can´t ear any difference in SQ, now the PC is absolutely silent using the PMW and although the previous noise of the fans was not annoying it was nevertheless perceivable.

Regards,
Juan

Thanks Peter,

To complement your post would be helpful also if could be explained in detail (perhaps it is already done in some other posts) a couple of things:

- How to install step by step the LAN

- How to install step by step the remote control to use a tablet or maybe a smartphone over WiFi.

Finally a question: Using the 1.186-i version, is Windows 8.1 as good for SQ as Windows 8?

Juan

Hi Kjell,

The look of the room with the speakers is enviable. Congratulations!!

Maybe I must correct something. *Of course* I suggested that it is Juan in this small village etc. But this is not him ...

That´s fine Peter, clarification accepted along with the implicit apology.

Thank you!! Peter. Does it mean that I can use the 75B upgrade with all the benefits the same way as others with RCA amps?

Juan

Hi, I need some help, could someone tell me seeing my speaker data sheet if I can modify the input xlr to use the NOS1a 75B with Blaxius cables?

Please see also de Operating Manual (2. Installation and Figure.3) where there is information about changing the XLR to RCA

Thanks,
Juan

Hi Arjan, how do you connect the Blauxius to your Jadis?, do you use a RCA/BNC adaptor or you have modified the amp inputs?

Juan

To change the subject a little, now I´m going to watch on tv the "friendly" match between Germany and Spain to see if we have changed somewhat since the last disaster.  Wink
