Thanks Brian, these cables at least have a reasonable price. Do you know someone who has used these cables?

It looks that the USB cable issue is still open...

Juan

Juan, please do if you think it should be solved for you. But I think a topic about that already exists ?

Kind regards,

Thanks Alain.

Peter, thatīs Ok, for my part the topic is closed, I do not experience random stops. The only other thing that happens to me, and very rarely, are stops in the middle of the music and it recovers with Alt + X or mouse movement, if you want treat it in another topic or here, what you think is best.

Juan

Just an observation... The tick that you hear at the beginning of a song has been here since the beginning, when I was still using WinXP... Do you mean that or other ticks happening while the music is playing ?

Alain, Iīm talking about the tick thatīs at the beginning of a song, and yes it is there forever, I donīt know why I thought that with W8 it should have gone. Anyway, with your settings in the NOS1 driver (12ms/8ms) the tick is unnoticeable. The other tick I have is much loud and it happens when I restart the computer if I donīt wait for a while, 30 seconds or even more, after closing XXHE.

Hi Juan,

I am not sure if this is related to underclocking or to any setting in XXHE that is too near some kind of boundary... I would try it in NORMAL OS mode also to see if anything about this has an effect or not.

Having multiple settings interacting with each other has its pros and cons Happy.

Regards,

Alain

Alain, I havenīt tried it in Normal mode, Iīll do it to see what happens.

Now I remember a few stops but every once in a while, typing Alt + X made the music come again.

562  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: W8 Ticks on: September 07, 2013, 07:10:07 pm

I remember now, it stopped at 8ms for me...
Alain

Hi Alain your solution works (almost totally). If I reduce the USB buffer size in the NOS1 driver from 16ms to 12ms the ticks barely audible and thatīs being very near to the speaker and at 8ms I have to put my ear almost touching the speaker to ear an almost imperceptible tick every time a song starts. Now the ticks donīt bother me at all, so thank you! The problem, if it means that there is a problem, is that the ticks are still there.

Juan

Peter,

When listening to music I get ticks/skips.

Here I have also some ticks (not skips) with W8 but I had it with or without Imdisk, so I donīt think that the problem is Imdisk. One loud tick happens when restarting the computer at the moment it is turned off, that happens if I donīt wait for around 30 seconds after closing XXHE. Now Iīm testing a linear power supply for the external hard drive (with data) and the ticks are much lower and very often there is none. Could those ticks have to do with the wall wart power supplies?

Juan

Hi Mani, with balance connections you donīt have that noise but any difference in SQ with the Ridge Street Enopias USB cable versus the stock cable using in both cases xlr connections?

This is more difficult to test as it would require taking the Berning out and replacing with one of my other amps, and I don't really want to do this just now. But in my office system, I use a fully balanced setup - NOS1 going into active Genelec satellites/sub. From what I remember, the Enopias reduced some of the brightness of the printer cable even in this balanced setup. Could be a good thing, or a bad thing. Will need to try again and get back to you.

Mani.

Ok, thanks Mani

3) The USB noise has only now become an issue because until very recently I've been using balanced connections between the NOS1 and power amp. With balanced connections, there is absolutely no USB noise, irrespective of USB cable type or length.

Alain and Peter,

One additional thing that I have done is to add Alain's batch file and a shortcut to XXHE (to the version on the ramdisks) to windows startup so both processes run automatically when the computer boots.  I just press the button to turn the computer on and then XXHE is sitting there running from the RAMDisks.  Nice!!

Cheers,

Anthony

Hi Anthony, would you please let me know how to add the batch file and the XXHE shortcut to the W8 startup?. I knew how to do it in W7 and how to delete files from W8 start up but I canīt find the way to add these files.

Regards,
Juan

PS. Please put your signature whenever is possible, thanks

Just a quick post to share my latest USB experiences...

A couple of years ago I bought a USB cable from eBay which had separate data and power lines, with the ground passing through the data line (not the 5V power line). I fished this cable out and connected it to the PC via only the data line. Et voila, no crackling noise whatsoever...

... AND, a totally different sound too. A much cleaner, fuller sound, with much deeper bass. On first hearing, it sounds too laid back and almost dull. But with prolonged listening it sounds more realistic. The highs, although more subdued, are sweeter. And the real test is that you can listen to music for hours without any agitation.

Mani.

Hi Mani, this issue of the influence of the usb cable looks interesting. If the NOS1 donīt use the power part of the usb cable I donīt know how the cable can influence the sound (old discussion here in the forum). Anyway could you provide some details of the type or brand of the cable you use?

Best regards,
Juan

If the amount of memory is the main problem (perhaps not the only one), why not try the Ramdisk if only to see if there is a perceived improvement in SQ? Even if the amount of memory already installed is limited I think itīs worthwhile to test it.
If there is a better SQ then buy more memory to get at least 24Gb or even change the mother board if with the one you have it is not possible. I mean, just if the SQ perceived is noticeable better and youīd like to maintain this SQ. Thatīs around 300€ in the worst of case, buying an Asrock X79 EXTREME4-M (the one in the XXHE PC) and 16Gb of Ram, thinking that you already have at least 8Gb of Ram. Iīm not saying to do it right now, Iīm sure that this Ramdisk issue needs more experimentation but if after that the better SQ is consolidated, then to think in buying more memory wouldnīt be a bad idea. JMHO.

Thanks Alain. As I said your software works beautifully well and Iīm sure that this ramdisk contributes greatly to the good sound I have now. So far I havenīt had any problem with the sizes provided originally by Alain although, to tell the truth, I only charge one album at a time (flac or wav). Anyway, following Peter advise Iīm going to increase the sizes of both ramdisks to 3Gb for the XXHE drive and 10Gb for the Playback Drive, that leaves 11Gb for XXHighEnd that should be enough, now Iīm using again 24Gb of Ram.
I encourage other people to try it even if it is just for SQ, in my case it is better than ever as I say. Of course I do understand the point of view of Peter and, as you said Alain, the last word belongs to him.

Again Iīd like to thank Alain publicly for his helpful work.

Juan
570  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Settings on: August 28, 2013, 01:42:24 am
I use Imdisk but in someway modified by Alain making it easy to work with it. It creates two virtual disks named like two floppy discs A and B, you can give them the values you want but I gave them 2Gb for the Playback Drive and 500Mb for XXHighEnd/XXData. I gave this values because although previously I was using 24Gb of Ram now I downsized to 16Gb in order to use as less power as possible from the PSU, Iīm just testing it and maybe Iīll return to 24Gb to give a bigger size to the Playback Drive. As I suggested, I would ask Alain about it when he returns from vacation one of these days, Iīm sure he can give a much better explanation than me on how it works and how can it be installed.

Just in case you want to go ahead by yourself here you have information about Imdisk: http://www.ltr-data.se/opencode.html/#ImDisk

Juan
