Fantastic news!

I will buy it as soon as it becomes ready.
Also I look forward to the new GUI with better layout.

What will be the price for the new software?

I have to say at this stage that my room acoustically is bad - very very bad!!!! - you would not choose my room if you did not have to!!!. It is the kiss of death to most speakers. It is "L" shaped with the speakers firing down the long part of the L and the short part (kitchen) of the L to one side of left hand speaker. Not at all symmetrical acoustically. To make it worse the long part of the L is a long thin room - really bad for acoustics. I used to have big transmission line speakers (that particular pair just sounded awful) and before them a pair of Quad ESL - they used to sound great in my old house (taking into considerations the limitations of Quads in the dynamics and bass department) but in my current room they sounded just plain awful. So I have to be pleased that the sound I now get is quite good.

Could you post a drawing of your room, including size and speaker/listening coordinates?

A piece from "The Soundoctor" white papers, of interest re ports(This is from an article integrating subs but is still relevant to all loudspeakers):
http://www.soundoctor.com/whitepapers/subs.htm

Robocop,

I find this lengthy post rather misguiding.

The theoretical principals discussed are of course valid, but – you know – sometimes theory and practical life doesn’t always agree. The main point here is not the choice of principle, but how well it is executed.

A ported shoe box sized speaker will indeed have typical problems in the bass, as described in that “white paper”.
But a large floor standing speaker with a 12” bass driver and a proper port tuning, can perform exceptionally well in the bass.

I have heard panel speakers with exceptionally good bass performance, too.

Keep in mind, that musically speaking, the most important register in the bass is what’s going on above 40 Hz, not below 40 Hz.

This is based on my own experience from owning several costly loudspeakers of various principles.

My dedicated music PC has only 1 duty: Carry my music and running my XX player.

I keep it on 24/7. It is connected to the internet, but I never use it for surfing on the net. Except when downloading XX updates.
But it does perform some automatic antivirus upgrades and security stuff on my OS. I guess this is done from time to time (I let it run in automatic update mode regarding the Windows security stuff).

Anyway, yesterday I discovered a suboptimal SQ in my system. -A kind of hardening in the upper mid range, adding some “glare” and (too much) forwardness on piano, especially.

Today I rebooted the PC and voila!, back to normal. SQ now more homogenic and neutral. I can play louder without fatigue.

-I guess from time to time we have to reset our PCs and let them empty “some sh*t” or whatever happens.

Ooops, seems I havnt done my home work here.  blush1

Now I know what that little "fx" button does!

Life is getting increasingly more comfortable with the XX player!  Happy

Thanks mate!
157  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Wishlist: Auto upsampling for playlists on: February 12, 2012, 04:14:51 pm
I have music of several sampling rates:
44, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192kHz.

During playback I always want maximum upsampling, using my NOS1 24/768 USB DAC.
44&48 allows x16 upsampling.
88.2&96 allows x8 usampling.
176.4&192 allows x4 upsampling.

When playing one album at the time, I set the upsampling rate accordingly.
But when I play a playlist with songs with mixed samplingrates, then I have to start/stop, change the upsampling manually.

-I wish there was a "Auto upsample" function which automatically upsampled each track to the maximum possible.  Happy
158  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Sound of FLAC? on: February 08, 2012, 03:28:24 pm
For what it is worth: Morten Lindberg, the owner/producer of record label 2L, said last year that they dislike to distribute their hi-rez music as FLAC, because it taxes the computers too much in the conversion phase.

Generally speaking, this is of course also pending on the size and speed of your computer/processor.

But keep in mind that 2L distribute 5.1 (six channels) in 24/192 hi-rez, which is turning into quite big number crunching.

IIRC, he said that they had observed some cases where FLAC-files caused audible distortion.

-----------

Personally, I often get "processor overload warning" from Norton security when I use my laptop computer to convert 24/96 FLAC into lossy AAC (for use in iTunes/iPod).

-So it sems there is something going on here. The difference in SQ between WAV and FLAC is (probably) linked to how FLAC converison taxes the PC during realtime playback.

Another weighty reference in this matter: Editor and technical engineer Paul Miller of Hi-News wrote a full page story about 2 years ago, describing why/how he heard SQ differences between FLAC and WAV.

Peter, it was a big mistake building your house on the premises of an ancient graveyard. Now your rooms are haunted by the 16 ghosts of the past.   scare

---------

Joking apart, it makes me sad that you are troubled by your hearing. I hope you get better, and that you give them necessary rest, not playing too loud too often.
The doctors say after a loud listening experience (a concert or something) your ears needs 48 hours to recover. So, NEVER, loud levels for 2 consecutive days.

Ear surgery is progressing, but I doubt there will be a fix for it in our life time…  Old

PS: Wounded ears recovers faster with more sleep/rest/vacation.

Pedal,

You can connect the tablet wireless (WiFi) to another PC with WiFi. So, WiFi is not forbidden in the room (according to me then) but it is forbidden in de Audio PC. Only have the WiFi transceiver (hence that PC) not close to the audio PC
This is what I do today. I have a D-Link hub with WiFi transmitter placed a couple of meters away from the media-PC.

I use a laptop, but are planning to buy a tablet for quicker/more convinient use in the listening sofa.
Happy

My media-PC is connect by 2m cable to the WiFi transmitter, who connects wireless to the laptop.
-It is perhaps not the "best" solution, but a practical compromise in my living room.
I could switch off the WiFi entirely, if running a network cable to the laptop.

I think this can work for a remote control:

AIM:
-Controling the media PC from the listening seat.
-Avoiding WiFi with its RF radiation.

SOLUTION:
-Run a cable from your internet connection to a network hub.
-Connect your media-PC to the hub with a network cable.
-Connect your laptop (or your tablet*) to the hub with a (long) network cable.
-Use Remote Desktop software to control the media-PC.

*Anybody who knows about a tablet with a plug connection option for a network cable?
-Used like a wired dedicated remote control, I fancy a lightweight tablet with a quick startup and a long lasting battery capasity. Network cables can run for long lengths, making it easy to tuck away along the floor/underc carpets etc

What do you thing, guys?

Yeah, nice thinking.
Well, that is what brought us here in the first place. You not being happy with software players, so you created your own.

Next, you were not happy with the DACs around, so you went on building your own!

I am curious about the continuation...   Good job !

Oh boy ...

Please stay actively on the topic, because nothing is more devistating than WiFi. Well, that's what I assume for "wireless".
I had hoped this was clear by now.

My media-PC is connect by 2m cable to the WiFi transmitter, who connects wireless to the laptop.

I control my media-PC wireless from a laptop. I used Remote Desktop but it uses more computing resources, so last year I changed to Team Viewer. It works very well, seemingly more stable.

I have TeamViewer also on my Android phone. I can control my media PC from anywhere in the world. But screen is too tiny for XX. Not usable for daily use.

Best seasonal greetings from Norway, too!

Here is a "postcard photo" of my set up in Christmas dressing. Styling by wife. NOS1 DAC resides behind the left door.

Usually there is a seasonal gift for my system every year.
Last year the original NOS1 DAC was my special, arriving just in time for Christmas day.

This year, under the Christmas tree, there were 5 sets of DIY interconnects made from silver/cotton by my friend LMC. I'll give them a run tomorrow.
