16  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / chipsets-present and future implications for NOS 1 on: May 07, 2011, 07:26:20 pm
OK, so I'm starting to dig into the posts as I contemplate putting together my PC for XXHighEnd and NOS1.  I know there is no such thing as future -proofing in the computer world, but still you hate to think of making a big investment that gets obsolete quickly.  Here are some questions that I hope some here can help with:

a) usefulness of overclocking.  I'm not sure from Peter's and other responses whether there's any benefit (and of course there is the downside of more heat in the PC = more cooling needed).  But I thought from Peter's other posts that a lot of CPU horsepower was a good thing- one reason to avoid a laptop, so I'm confused why all things considered, overclocking wouldn't be good.
b) has anyone besides Praphan played around with p67 or h67 chipsets and the Sandy Bridge CPUs?  It sounds like some fundamental issue with the p67 or h67-based motherboards and PCIe out to the Juli@?
c) what is the future for the 1366 socket motherboards and the i7 970 etc in view of Sandy Bridge now and Ivy Bridge coming.  In other words, will NOS 1 end up limited to only an older generation of motherboards?

Thank for your thoughts,
Tim

Thanks so much for the thoughtful replies.  I had seen the thread about the compatibility problem with the p67/h67 mobos.  I wasn't sure whether it was just one particular mobo (Gigabyte) or likely extends to all the Sandy Bridge mobos?  I was thinking of the upcoming z68 chipset, which allows both overclocking and using the integrated graphics processor on the Sandy Bridge cpu (I have no need for a discrete  GPU).  Should I guess that those mobos will also have problems with NOS 1?  And yes, I will run a machine dedicated to music only- thanks.

18  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / CPU cooling needs with XX High End on: May 06, 2011, 01:50:11 pm
I'm building a PC for the first time to allow for XXHighEnd and NOS1.  I'm planning on using a i-5 2500k CPU.  2 questions for those with more experience: a) will I get a benefit for XXHighEnd by overclocking the CPU (I assume so) and b) how much cooling do I need for the CPU?  I'm not going to use a separate graphics card, to cut down on heat and I don't need it.  And most of the time the CPU won't be doing much.  My only question is whether the CPU will be maxed out for intervals of time with XXHigh end and need more than average cooling.  Thanks very much to anyone who can help.
