Just for my curiosity... Is RDP the same as RDC ? I know RDC to mean "Remote Desktop Connection", but for RDP ?

Thanks Happy

Hi Mani,

When I read your opening post yesterday evening, I started reading about ReFS and after maybe 30 minutes, I thought that this new format was not mature enough to be used (for the moment). If someone compares it with NTFS , there are missing features and the fact that if can't be used for the OS partition sounds weird to me. I did not take the time to check if this has similarities with other OS filesystems but I wondered if I would use this for my music drive(s). But I salute your wisdom in not using it for your backups, as it sounds to require some more "breaking in"...

There was something I saw a few times, but I never really checked what it meant... It is about putting a drive in "READ ONLY" mode. Without verifying what it really was about, I thought that the system would prevent anyone from being able to change anything on a drive once content is considered satisfactory, so putting it in READ ONLY mode would prevent something from overwriting or corrupting it. But I am not sure about this. I think I saw this in BIOS, but not sure...

The checksum feature could be handy to assure that I am not about to overwrite a good file on my backup drive with a corrupted one. With TBs of music, how can someone protect his backups ?

I am still waiting for a filesystem that will be simple, standalone (one drive by itself) and very robust. I do not consider RAID methods to be necessary for our purpose of playing music.

I now have hard drives that are from 2009-10 and I am considering replacing them with more recent ones, to prevent accidents. I realize there is no perfect method to protect my precious files, other that having at least 2 backups... But it can be expensive...

Imperfect world we are in...

I was wondering... Is the Windows firewall necessary ? I thought that a router already has its own firewall ?

Hi Mani,

Have you tried copying that album between the 2 PCs, just to see if you can get the speed transfer (the box that indicates the transferring) ?

Hi Paul,

I have an old habit that goes back to the times when I was tired of reinstalling Windows each time something bad was happening. At the times installations were long...

Cloning a drive on another can be a good thing when someone is experimenting different installations. When something turns really bad, at least you have another drive to reduce the installation time.

And if you take that path, remember to clone the good drive to another drive... For the next time Happy

Hi,

I don't know if it is the same as with Windows 8, but there is a an initialisation procedure that wipes everything except the OS if I am not mistaken ?

Of course, when you will have done this, you will need to reinstall XXHE and the other softwares that you previously had.

See this link: http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/reset-windows-10-pc

It will reset everything without having to reinstall Windows 10...

Hope this helps Happy

Why "non flashing led", does this affect the sound?
Kindest regards
Basil.
Hi Basil,

Peter may answer this too, but if you read the first pages about the Intona journey since it began, you will notice that the led was flashing all the time. Peter communicated with Daniel from Intona and between reports, he mentioned that. Daniel answered that if a customer asks for it, he will make the required modification so that the led will stop flashing when the USB connection is established at high speed.

While it is hard to know if it would have affected SQ, it seemed better not to have it flashing all the time Happy

And we have peace of mind too Happy

Happy I will make a guess... He gets up to go to the PC to change album instead of using wi-fi ?

But interested too to learn if it is what I think or not... Happy

Peter,

The "industrial" version of the Intona ?

Thanks Peter, it will not be for a long time, just to make comparisons.

It's the Sotm PCIe USB 3 card that I'd like to test again. It should allow me to power it easily with a LPSU (it has a connection for this).

If this brings good results, I may ask how to power the Silverstone USB card that many of us use but I guess it will requires more effort to have it done.

Hi Peter,

My question may be silly, but if I was to install more than one PCIe USB controller card in my Audio PC, but have only one of them activated at the same time, will it draw current and potentially affect SQ ?

The reason is that I have a few PCIe cards and would like to compare them, but without having to insert and remove each of them.

I would simply deactivate them in the Device Manager, letting only the one I wish to use. Then I would deactivate this one an activate the other...

Do you consider this to be an heresy or is it acceptable - at least I will proceed that way for a while... ?

Yes, I think it is a silly question, but...

While I know that the question is not addressed to me, I can say that it takes less than 24 hours to trigger that activation thing, but a reboot does the trick Happy It does not really bother me. Anyway, I experienced this with Windows 8 also and my copy was activated, so... No real problem for me Happy

Thanks Peter. I hate the need to turn the NOS1 OFF and ON each time I boot into Windows... But it should not take long until I get back my Audio PC. It will be at the store today for the repair.

Hi Peter,

Since the only variable is the laptop temporarily replacing my Audio PC (until it is repaired), I suspect that the laptop is responsible for the situation.

But how about this: I also did the test with an adaptor (Sbooster USB Isolator) that cuts the 5V at the output USB port of the Intona and it will start when I turn OFF and ON the NOS1 ? This is really strange no ? My question is now "Is it the power or is it the signal that does this ?"...

Very strange...
