346  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: Req: any USB cable tips? on: October 13, 2014, 01:15:33 pm
Hi Joachim,

Are your sure that a USB cable without power will work between the PC and the NOS1(a) ?

2 years ago I had an Sotm USB 3 PCIe card that has a switch to allow sending the 5V power in the USB cable or not.

To establish the connection it was necessary first to allow the power to flow between the PC and the NOS1, then (and only then) as soon as the 2 components connected, I could switch OFF the USB power...

I would test with an ordinary USB cable (on which the power is "masked" with a thin layer of isolation tape or plastic) first just to be on the safe side...

It seems that some dacs do not require this, but the NOS1 seem to use it at least for the connection time... (Peter ?)

Mmmm unhappy I don't imagine someone at Spectral saying "no problem" ... They really have their own way about fiddling with their components...

I will have to ask questions around...

Sorry, I may not have explained myself correctly.

I read that you have modified a NOS1a to have BNC connectors and I suppose that if you were to do this to someone's NOS1a, it would either take the place of the RCA or the XLR outputs ?

If this is right, the cable would be BNC at each end. But I don't see myself asking to have my power amplifier modified at its input to have BNC connectors... This is why I was asking.

349  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / About DSD on: October 08, 2014, 02:06:06 pm
Hi Peter,

I read extraordinary things on CA about the eventuality (I mean "upcoming") of either a modified NOS1 dac that will play DSD or a new dac...

Since this is not really a secret (you talk profusely about it on CA), can you also unveil (develop) it here ?

Hi Peter,

I suppose that we could ask to have BNC connectors instead of RCA and have an adaptor (BNC to RCA) at the other end for the amplification ?

Like Robert. I am waiting for the next version. I just looked in the Download and see that 1.186a is still the latest offcial version (it's the one I actually have). So what about the versions you added with custom filters and such... ?

An answer from L-Com after all :

Our CENTER CONDUCTOR: 18 AWG. SOLID SILVER COATED COPPER. I hope that helps define your purchase.

What does this mean ? My English is not 100%. Reads like silver coated with copper ? nah ...
Peter, "Solid silver plated copper" means that the solid copper is  plated with silver... Why the "silver plated" between the "solid" and the "copper"... A language anomaly I guess, but it sure can be confusing when not too easy with English...

Hi Coen,

I have my all purpose PC with my external music hard drive connected to it with Esata. My all purpose PC is with W7 pro 64.
The all purpose PC is connected with the music PC with an ethernet cable (1gbit for the two of them). The music PC is with W8 pro 64.
My all purpose PC allows me to go on internet with an added  wireless USB network card.
Like you I connect on the music PC through RDC. The music PC has no monitor, keyboard nor mouse connected to it. I simply turn it on then I do all through the all purpose PC.
When you are in normal OS mode, you mention that you want to keep the LAN on but it has to be "non persistent".
Then you go back in minimize OS after.

I use a ramdisk on the music PC Happy

Hope this help Happy

Regards,

Alain
PS: I am not sure if having two network cards on the all purpose PC could complicate things for the connection between the 2 PCs. I did something additional to prevent this, but I suggest that you try first to see if it works for you. If not, please say so ok ?

Hi Paul,

I concur with Mani. I sure hope you will be happy with your choice.

It will not be of much help, but when I got the Tannoy, I really was not convinced with what I heard before I made my decision. But I did get them after all. I am happy today, but the process was long and sometimes I was really not sure.

What is hard is that passed over a certain level, things can get so sharp that it becomes complicated. Sometimes getting a new component will mean "change another", sometimes one will decide not to keep a component because it requires too much... Money can also be an important factor in our attempt to "accept" something or turn it into something positive. Ultimately it comes to some difficult questions, questions that are not easy to share with others. I try hard not to disappoint anyone, but if I disappoint myself... unhappy

From what I have read from you throughout time, I am sure you will find your way, as you are a "fighter" Happy

But please, do not rebuild your home !!!! Wink
