421  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Sound system chain and ground scheme on: April 11, 2014, 02:04:38 pm
Something has changed since last time I wrote (October 19, 2013) with that grunge that was generated in my main speakers each time I was turning the subs ON.

For personal reasons I disconnected all my things last February and did not use my speakers and power amplifier until yesterday.

Just to recapitulate:
- I had a ground loop problem last year and the only way I could get rid of it was by lifting the power amp PE.
- But after doing this, another "grunge" noise appeared in the main speakers and to my dismay it was coming from my 2 subs when they were ON.
- Each of these 2 problems was in opposition with the other... Putting back PE on the power amp was removing the noise coming from the subs, but the other ground loop noise was back...

Yesterday (April 10) I reconnected everything together, leaving the power amp PE lifted and... I don't have either noise anymore !!!! Happy

So I wondered what could have changed since the last time
2 things:
- I removed the iFi iUSB powering my external SSD drive because it cannot power a new SSD that I have now. I have put back the wall wart that came with the iUSB power supply.
- I have isolated the Silverstone USB 3 PCIe controller card AND disconnected the NOS1 black wire (http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=2838.0)

As for the electrical circuits, they are the exact same as they were before.

So, I am not 100% sure, but if I had a guess to make, I would say that the isolation of the USB connection from the PC chassis and the disconnection of the black wire in the NOS1 could explain this.

I will probably do some tests in the following times, but it sure is a happy conclusion Happy

I think this is what Brian mentionned for Seagate ?

Hi Paul,

It happened to me too, but at the time I was too impatient to check for a solution.

This link may help you ? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2581408

It says that you need to format the drive in GPT partition type prior to installation, so I guess that you need to have the OS working on another drive to do so.

But this is not all: you also need to use UEFI instead of BIOS, but at this point I suppose it means that you specify "UEFI" boot type (or something like that) in the BIOS for that drive...

Since I finally set for having just an OS on a SSD and the 4TB drive through network I did not need to do this, but thought it could help...

Regards,

Alain
PS: I think that Brian has the solution Happy There is certainly a utility on the Seagate website for this situation...
424  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: SQ of 1.186, best ever! (Again) on: April 03, 2014, 06:20:20 pm
Peter,

Yes for the best stereo example... The sound is different, but I am never sure if there is something better in one and also better in the other...

But there is something else: when I read your written thoughts, I tend to switch like you do... Nothing like what Coen does (I envy him though to be persistent in his preferences). I know you are on to something and I don't want to miss it.

Either version, I find something good in each of them...

Our state of mind will always be the most important while listening to music... When I was young, listening to music on the AM radio was very exciting, as I was discovering so much music... As you will understand, I will not mention anything about SQ... This was way out of my mind at the times Happy

Mind is the source of so many things, not to say "everything"...

428  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Bass Issue (Lack thereof) on: April 02, 2014, 01:58:46 pm
Since I came back to this hobby in 2010, I never really attached much importance to the bass. I could immediately tell that the bass coming from the Tannoy speakers were "shy" compared to what I was used to listen to, but I have always felt that the bass was "fat" before, up to a point where I had trouble hearing the details of the rest of the spectrum.

While it bugged me (with the Tannoy), at the time I had (and still have) my Bryston dac, what I really discovered with XXHE is that the bass has different tones ! This has been a revelation for me.

The "subs" I got were a move I did because some friends told me they were surprised by the lack of bass. But this is how we tend to appreciate SQ or should I mention what one thinks about SQ.

With the replacement of my Bryston dac (with the NOS1), apart from the other qualities I noted, the bass is simply even more startling with the tones and the "fine canvas" it reveals.

And yes at some point I was fooled by the higher output of the Bryston (I insist on the word "fooled").

Bah... It was simply taking too much place for nothing... But please do not take this as censorship on my part Happy

Yet you did not answer yesterday to my question: why posting this in the Support section ? You mention "Tweak", so should this not be put in the Playback Tweaks ?

... And am I "hot" or "cold" with my guess ? Wink

I believe we need what we have, but if it is about this "only one master clock"... ?

Anthony, you seem to know something we don't Happy But why put this in the XXHighEnd Support section ?

So ...

I have been able to find a tweak that makes XXHighEnd redundant. No influence is possible any more.
Of course because of it SQ improved vastly.

So I finally did it. But now what ?

A little usb isolation tweak update that I like to share:
Secondly I disconnected the NOS1 USB cable from the pc while the whole system was powered like I am used to (in order to reorganise cables). The NOS produced a rythm of loud pops that scared the hell out of me. Reconnecting the usb cable made them disappear instantly. I am glad everything seems still to work well but I am rather 'safe than sorry' with the wire connected.
Hi Coen,

Last year, while I was trying to get rid of my ground loop problem, something similar happened. There was a series of pops getting louder and louder... I jumped on the "mute" button of my preamp, but the preamp and power amp had already entered in protection mode... This scared me to death...

It could have been a stupid move on my part (it was probably just that), but all my cables were connected between the components... The only thing I was doing was shutting off a component (while volume was muted), raise the earth (or the contrary) on that component, then put back the volume... But what I learned from this was never brutally raise the volume of the preamp, just in case...

This is the part I hate: not knowing exactly what I am doing, or assuming it should be harmless...

Alain
