466  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: W7 and 1.186 issues. Related??? on: February 14, 2014, 01:59:27 am
Hi Brian,

1 foot of snow + drizzle rain + wind... Yuk... I think the worst will pass south of here... They forecast about 8 inches where I am for tonight and tomorrow morning...

Yes please, I think you could send me your batch file so I can check it ?

Alain

Hi Brian,

I still don't know if I will be buried under snow tonight or not... It was supposed to pass south of the region, but weather forecast is far from an exact science... How many inches have fallen on your side ?

I will check tonight if the batch file does the same here. If so, I will check for a solution, otherwise I could ask to see the content of the batch file you use, just in case...

Regards,

Alain

468  Ultimate Audio Playback / Orelino / Orelo MKII Loudspeakers / Re: In anticipation of my new Orelino speakers on: February 11, 2014, 12:41:14 pm
That's what I was thinking about (the thread about my experiment with long XLR cables last year)... So with the Blue Jeans Cables XLR cables at about 14pF per foot, 36 feet would still be within the parameters that Peter indicates with the NOS1.

469  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: SQ of WAV vs M4A on: February 10, 2014, 04:46:01 pm
I never looked into iTunes and I guess I never will (it's like a virus on your PC). But now I don't know ... Is it maybe commonly known that the M4A from iTunes should be normal CD quality but it is not ?

At least I can think that it's a dirty trick to present M4A as CD quality while it just as well can be lossy (like MP3 (AAC)) and that maybe nothing is going to detect that really; I mean I too can easily save an MP3 (for example) after it has been expanded to WAV and save it as WAV. Nothing would detect the difference except possibly your ears and spectral analysis.

Peter
And the checksum...

Hi Joachim,

I thought that AAC was lossy compression ? I am surprised...

471  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Power amp > speakers (Impedance matching) ? on: February 09, 2014, 02:21:51 pm
Some time ago, I bought a Spectral Audio on the used market. The model is a DMA-180, rated at 200w/canal through 8 ohms. At 4 ohms it outputs 400w.

It did not seem to be a problem for me, but recently someone brought the question about impedance matching. His argument is that from the impedance plot of my Tannoy System 15, there could be "hot spots" (the impedance can vary between 8 and 4 ohms depending on the frequencies...).

... Spectral Audio and MIT cables have been working hand in hand for decades now. In the owner's manual, there is a clear indication that the MIT cables are "mandatory" to address the broadband of the output (can go up to 1.8MHZ). There is a warning that the power amp could oscillate if not properly matched with the speakers, they even advise not to leave the power amp ON when not using it.

I have been living for the last year and a half with the Spectral Audio, but that association (between SA and MIT) has always been present in my mind. Now I would like to do something about it. Wouldn't it be about the impedance variations that the System 15 speakers show, I would not mind about this (all looks ok and I never felt there was a problem). But sound wise, I don't really trust my ears for potential variations in SQ.

My question is: does a power amp really change its power ratings when music is playing, because at some frequencies the impedance changes ?

I am actually using a bi-wire set of speakers cables (Canare quad cable), from Blue Jeans Cable.

Thanks.

472  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: XXHE 1.186a "crashes" on: February 08, 2014, 11:14:56 pm
Hi Stanley,

Peter probably unchecked a "view" option in the Folder Options to be able to see some system files and folders that are normally hidden.

Doing this helps when trying to diagnose some problems Happy

473  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: SQ of 1.186, best ever! (Again) on: February 08, 2014, 08:53:18 pm
Can you indicate the song from Shpongle that you are talking about ? I could get it on Qobuz and try to understand what you mean...

Alain, that would be track 02. But maybe it is not important; I just picked the two first tracks I played yesterday to remain objective. So most of the sh*t is like this "music" and it is only that this track was in my Demo Gallery from W7 eras and I couldn't play it any more under W8. So, sub-objective. yes

By the way, you scare me with the test music you use  scare

Well yes, "test music" indeed. But for me this wasn't music as such as well, at first. I just learnt that this type of music contains all there is to "test" for, but next got involved because when things start to work well it's just so d*mn interesting that nice (Jazz etc.) tunes contain nothing really much. And yes, one can try to observe vinyl needle ticks because the're often in there (with thrown remarks that there's dust on the needle which I receive regularly swoon), but you can also try to look for them once you know they are there, to next know that something is not right with your system when they are *not* there any more. It's just transient response testing.
Same with the sub low. It's in actually nothing much, but in this type of music it is everywhere.

And now I really use this for music playing of which it already is very interesting what changed all *now* with a new version or setting.
It is coincidentally also the type of music I receive the least complaints about here. It's always quite easy going and not jazz tooting or rock smashing or women crying. All so-to-speak of course, but still; I try to play the most and the loudest possible and that needs the least complaints about it. But don't tell. whistle

Best regards,
Peter
Happy Thanks Peter. I understand and can imagine with all the sounds that I can hear in this that it can cover a lot of aspects you are verifying...

I have an album from Ian Brown. Lots of synthesizer, but also lots of distortion, since some songs are compressed to death and go at the saturation level. What a shame... Good music though.

Peter,

Do you use the XMP mode or do you leave the memory in its native mode (I mean native speed) ?

Thanks Happy

Thanks again Peter for these reports. It really does give me the desire to retry W7... I don't feel the urge to follow MS in their aim for version changes...

Wow, I am surprised that they already talk about a new version... But I guess that with all that is said about W8, W9 will be an attempt to "correct" some "flaws" that is preventing MS to gain on the mobile market...

I suppose there must be at least one component connected to PE - so it would be the PC and PC only ?

I don't check the DC offset on a regular basis... All I can say is that the values were ok the last time, but I also use RCA ICs for the moment. I will have to check this later (again...) but I did not know that you were converting the XLR > RCA Juan ? This is were I go into unknown territories...

Hi Juan,

There is almost no DC offset at all and this surprises me (in a good sense) Happy

By the way, do you hear the sound a little tilted to the right ? Well maybe not all of the songs, but as a general tendency ?
