766  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Windows 8 - Upgrade or Fresh Install on: June 16, 2013, 04:18:47 pm
I did an upgrade once from W7 to W8, but this was after I tried without success to install W8 on an empty new drive. An upgrade "needs" to see an OS already installed to work properly.

So I "cloned" my W7 OS from a different drive, then I did the upgrade. All went well, but I had some troubles removing the W7 files that Windows kept (administrative permissions). I had to "Google" for this removal.

What I do now is let the W8 installation start - provided that  W7 is on the drive.

Then at this screen...
http://www.eightforums.com/attachments/f1/f11/1713d1316128030-dual-boot-installation-windows-8-windows-7-vista-w7-3.jpg

... I select "Drive options (advanced)" and I delete all the partitions (I don't have the link to show this), then come back to the previous screen and let W8 do its work. The installation process will create whatever partitions it needs and install itself.

The fact that the installation program sees W7 is probably kept somewhere on the hard drive, so it will be a fresh install.

Hope this help.

Peter,

I see in your sig that you have managed to reduce the processor to a mere .76GHZ.

My first guess is that you did it to reduce some noise that could be induced by the CPU ?

I tried to do something similar just to check, but there are so many parameters that I could only reduce it to 1.2GHZ. Not sure about the results, so I am asking what was the aim ?

Regards,

Alain

Hi Georg,

The problem I have is that there are so many parameters with strange acronyms (there is not "Northbridge" notion in the BIOS for this pc), I fear I would do something that would screw up and then be forced to reset everything. I may have to go through experimentation at a certain point, but like you mention, I am not "in it" (curious yes, but not in a hurry) for the moment.

Hi,

Did you ask Peter to send you the W7-W8 driver ? The only thing I know is that the W7 driver alone will not work with W8...

Hope this help.

I may have a ram instead of a rom as memory Wink

Ah... You helped me remembering what this was about (the restores that were lost) because of some interaction between W7 and W8...

I think I understand about a combination of dual-boot and 2 different physical drives... Bur of course, you know that this is not my case... They really are totally independant.

My experience in this matter is quite nonexistent. I have made some dual boots a long time ago.

With all that is possible nowadays, I have decided to have a different drive for each OS. Of course, this can be done only whenever feasable, affordable and practical.

I use SSD for the OS. It is "standard" for me to expect quick boot and quick access to any program. I can also afford to have all my drives external.

Each OS stands on its own SSD. I just have to swap the connection between one drive or the other.

Not that this is economical nor practical for everyone of course, but it can be another avenue...

After reading a lot of posts about XXHighend and Window 8 (will install a version next week) and not prepared to invest in new PC hardware I tried some additional Mobo/BIOS tweaks:

Tweaking down the CPU clock rate again

I found some aditional parameters in the BIOS originally built in to overclock the CPU but used them to lower the clock rate. Hopefully I have reached the same low level as Peter.

Tweaking down the clockrate of PCI

Done via BIOS to the lowest possible value

Tweaking down the clock rate of the North-Bridge

Done via BIOS to the lowest possible value.

The early sonic results are very promising.

Georg

Hi Georg,

I know that there is some underclocking done through Xtweaks, but to reduce more has got to be done from BIOS...

Peter, how do you explain the results of a reduction in clocking ?

Thanks.

Thanks Juan,

I will do some tests to check if I hear differences between the 2 connections. I have a Vantec USB 3 x 4 ports hub, but I never really used it on a regular basis.

While I am sure that your tests were correctly conducted, I was wondering about the 2 different interfaces, as Sata does not carry any power within its cable (that could affect the data), and when using USB, it needs to be converted to Sata (maybe "converted" is a too strong word, as I am not sure what it requires).

On the other hand, USB seems "stronger" at the connection level. I had problems with Esata connections, as it is not always obvious to connect on the right side the first time (and I talk from experience, since I "broke" a few cables just by pushing the connection in without ensuring I was on the right side)...

Hi Juan,

Could you be more specific about the worsening of the Esata vs  the USB 3 connection ? Since it is possible for me to switch from one to the other... I would have thought that the fact of converting from USB to Sata inside the external case could induce something not desirable... On the other hand, Sata does not allow the same lenght between components, so it may not be practical for those who prefer to put their drives away from the pc...

Alain
Edit: I was wondering if the fact that there is power in the USB  cable (with the signal) would have a negative effect on the signal ? Sata does not have any power on its cable...

Thanks Juan, I will check the links and keep you posted. I don't know why I never took care of the dampening before... And I do hear the hard drives not only when they work...

You deserve the kind words Happy

Alain
