About ELO, would "Fire on High" (from Face the Music) be a good sample of what you mention ?

Hi Peter,

I am a little surprised too, but since I am still discovering the NOS1, I can only say that the sound is... Wonderful ! Happy I tend to take it as a "whole" and sometimes I will hear a new detail that I never heard before. This tells me that the micro-information is even more present and for me it is for the better.

At some point, I have to admit that maybe I should think about getting another amplifier... Not that the one I have is bad, but I am sure I could hear better...

but I tend to to check for the voices and the percussions, provided that the recording is good, but even then I am discovering with the NOS1 that certain recordings are not as good as I thought with my previous combination (converter + dac)...

But we are in February, it is cold, all seems "slower" than normal and from my perspective, to feel that the temperature is getting for the better could surely help. Not very technical thoughts, but very true also Happy

At this moment ? no. But as said, it would diminish the whole idea. So, this tells that when that part stays active SQ will be less again.

Peter
Maybe I don't get it the way you intend, but I was under the impression that the whole point is to let the system "dead" for the time it plays music, and then bring the screen, the network and the RDC back - until the next play... An so on...

Hey Alain,

I have a spare for you if you like.

Hi Gerard Happy

Thanks, but it would be complicated for you no ? It would be fantastic if I lived in Europe... But afar like this, I would feel guilty to ask for this...

The thought is appreciated though Happy

Oh wait now ...

Apologies ! I assumed that you used it for a NAS.
Ok, this is stupid. I have to send you a new dongle.

And next ... well, all actually anticipates on the combination with the remote control, but for now I just didn't put that through just because it takes virtually ages to find out the best combination to have all running as should. But look at the WiFi-Direct "aim" and see it coming ...

Peter
Well if it is possible to have a new set of dongles (I will have one in reserve), just PM me about the price (I don't remember it) and I'll go through Paypal ?

But... My understanding is that BT + RDC will not be accepted with "Stop all services" - right ?

Thanks.

Alain

Hum... May I suggest something ? While I don't know how complicated this can be, let's say that, like in unattended mode there things that are deactivated, would it be possible to add this functionnality with metworking and RDC ? So, when I start playing in unattended, the network disconnects and the RDC closes. All OK. At the end of the song(s), XXHE reactivate them ? Not a matter of life and death, but "if" it is possible without having to rewrite fundamentals in XXHE ?

Alain

Edit: Yes, I am certainly interested in using this new way of accessing the music pc. If I still had 2 dongles (only one working) for Bluetooth, at least I would use that instead of the standard ethernet...
862  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / 09-z8-2 and Stop All Services on: February 19, 2013, 02:27:16 pm
Hi Peter,

From what I understand, I have to not allow the rest of the services to work, including the network. So I did not activate the "Stop all Services" when I minimized OS, since I need that (networking) + RDC.

Once in Minimized OS, I can select it ("Stop all services"), but of course, when the song(s) are finished, I can't have access to the music pc no more. I know there is a way to tell XXHE to bring back the network plus the Remote Desktop Connection, but it would spare me a lot of trial and errors if you could indicate me what and where to put them exactly ?

Thanks.

"When the Best even got better" Happy Can't wait... But have to...

You only have to wait until you're home but then please do NOT forget to set XX (better talk OS) in normal state before you update.

For the first time I forgot this and now I have to re-install W7 again to have things working properly!!!!!!!  too much !

Bert
Hi Bert,

You kind of saved my life... I was about to trigger the new version without first going back in Normal OS mode...

Thanks Happy

868  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: How to get quiet cores ? on: February 18, 2013, 02:22:37 pm
Alain,

To me it seems that all is a matter of paying better attention. Remember, *seems* ...

For now we can stick to one subject only :
You say you see a spike on all cores once per 60 seconds. In the mean time you say you tried all kind of variations and gave examples of them. Now, no way those spikes once per 60 seconds will tay the same, OR you forget to mention other spikes. When the latter, the former is strange indeed, but I merely think you forget to tell that those 60 second spike intervals can very a lot (on those interval) with you changing those settings.

Or ?

Regards,
Peter

PS: I tried not to miss it, but with which OS is this ?

PPS: It can't harm to post pictures of your CPU graph. But tell with what settings that occurs. Then I can try to explain (or see something wrong ! Happy Happy)
Yes, I thought about that... And I forgot to mention the NOS1 buffers (between 8 and 12ms)...
I will send the different graphs back from work... And better organize my thoughts as I did not read myself enough before sending my post...

I am very conscient that there are so many parameters that could explain this... Normally I am persistent enough to avoid this, but this time it really eludes me...

It is with W7 by the way...

Thanks Happy

869  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / How to get quiet cores ? on: February 18, 2013, 12:21:43 pm
Since I received my new NOS1, I have been switching between W7 and W8. The reason for it is that I "heard" lots of people raving about how W8 sounds and that it was way better than W7. That was the only reason why I got a licence for W8 (and it was cheap to upgrade also).

But yes, the differences I heard between them pushed me back to W7, but I was late compared to many colleagues here, because of the addition of the NOS1, that is, by the way, a wonderful one. XXHighEnd + the NOS1 have pushed things to a direction I would never imagine to turn that deep.

So, since I was discovering this addition, I did not care too much about checking other things.

So I was quite surprised to see that I can't "quiet" the CPU cores, at least for the one(s)  used to play the music.

Among the settings, I first disabled all I could (PA, XTweaks, normalization), to reduce the variables in the equation. I even reinstalled a backup from W7 to eliminate the potential "alterations" I could have done that would induce a negative result (sometimes, too much of something can have an adverse effect).

I use whatever tools that I know (there are surely others) to help me in my quest for a quieter PC: DPC Latenty Checker from Thesycon, LatencyMon from Respledence Software and of course the Task Manager -> Performance tab . I even went in the BIOS to reduce the ram speed (from 2133mhz "XMP" state that overclocks the CPU) back to its standard 1333mhz ram speed.

Before having this pc, I had 2 others: am old laptop with a 1.6ghz dual core CPU + 4GB ram with W7 pro (64 bit), also a Lenovo with a G620 dual core (2.6ghz) - each of them with the same exact OS properties. I was able to get at least one quiet CPU core for the music.

Now I have an Intel 3930k CPU 6 + 6 cores (hyperthreaded) but I can't seem to get at least one to stay "quiet" and it eludes me...

I deactivated all the USB 3 ports from it just to check, even the Sotm USB 3 PCIex with which I had so many problems before (was generating blue screens with my previous Audiophilleo - Bryston configuration), but not anymore with the NOS1. I plugged the NOS1 through the motherboard USB 2 ports (Intel), but it does not change a thing.

There is a pulse each 60 seconds on all cores with the DPC Latency Check and the driver that seems to induce the latency is the Phasure NOS1 driver itself... I got the 1.03 version for W8 that also works for W7. I don't know if this was happening with the previous driver version or not, but I don't have it.

I have tries the most "relaxed" adjustments from XXHighEnd, but I haven't been able to overcome this situation. Maybe it is normal, maybe it is something with my motherboard (ASUS Sabertooth X79 with lga 2011 socket), or something obvious I don't see, but it seems annoying for me to have such a powerful pc without a way to get at least one or two quiet cores.

Not that I don't like what I hear, but...

Is there something I haven't thought of ? The answer seems obvious, but at this point, I have changed the Q1 between 3 and 30, SFS between 2 and 430, clock resolution between 5 and 15ms...

Thanks Happy

Alain

870  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: What will a PC upgrade do for the SQ on: February 16, 2013, 05:31:02 pm
And it is just that experience. I have that Nexus and 3 others here, all failed ...

And hey, aren't that supid reviews/tests ... The Nexus is the most silent. Yea, when you don't listen to your amplifiers.
Stupid stuff.

Peter

Right. The problem is: when they talk about noise, they too often only mention the incoming noise from the device... Not the noise that spreads into the signal and pollutes the rest...
