91  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Windows 8 and os-ram drive Errors (and too low frequency) on: June 13, 2016, 03:32:52 am
Hi Peter,

Win 8 now works with the os-ram drive in ram mode Happy

After I had success following your directives to increase the size of MyWin10-105586.vhd file (added ram to have 32GB total), I thought I could try Win 8 again.

It did not work.

Then I wondered if doing the procedure under a running Windows 8 OS instead would have a different result.

So I copied the "MyWin8 - copy.vhd" file on my previous Win 8 OS drive and went through the file increase procedure again.

It works ! Happy

Note: it is very important that you start again from the "copy" to do this. Once Windows 10 has put its nose in the vhd file, it is almost assured it will not work.

Regards,

Alain

Hi Coen,

I feel sad for what is happening... I suppose that all depends where one comes from. Or the amount of passion we inject in it.

In 2009 I decided to rip my CDs. First it was the ease of use and the ability to play music with my 2.1 computer speakers that drove me. The only "label of quality" for me was to not convert anything into MP3. At the time I was absolutely not aware that many people were already doing this to play with their main sound system. Tweaks, external dac,... I wasn't familiar with those. For me it was wonderful not to manipulate the CDs anymore.

My decision about my turntable and vinyls would come a few years later. My turntable was in a cardboard box, so were my vinyls. I was not warm with the idea to go back at them, maybe because what was happening in my life at that time was simply not motivating enough ? I don't recall.

One day I read about dacs and asked some questions around. A guy that installs Sonos like systems in residences and commercial buildings told me he had a Bryston dac. The cost was "high" for my standards but I decided to go for it.

Then all started from that.

I could go on with this, but all in all what I am trying to convey is that what I hear today is so much better than what I was hearing before, with my CD player and my turntable (at least it was different). But of course, it always comes to what you were used to listen to before going the computer audiophile route.

I actually use 2 PCs: one that was bought 8 years ago and one from 2012. The older one is used as my "all purpose" PC and music server (Core 2 duo 6850 3ghz with 8GB of ram, Windows 7 x64 pro). It is still very reliable and I use it each and every day for all tasks that I can think of.

The other is the "audio PC" and it should last between 8-10 more years. It does nothing except playing music, that is when I feel the pleasure to. It is idling most of the time with XXHighEnd, Minimized OS mode, os-ram drive, etc... The weird thing is that I had to send my Seasonic Platinum 1kw PSU under warranty (it refused to start one morning - 7 years warranty on it).

I have chosen not to compare vinyl to digital. I do the nightmare it was, with all the vinyl flaws (bad copy from worn out matrix, uncentered hole, warped record, "clicks" and "pops"). All the times I went back at the store to change a defective LP (was happening with 2 out of 3 LPs). You don't imagine the number of times I had to do this...

Does digital has a digital sound. For me it is a "yes", but with the NOS1 (soon to be a NOS1a in a few days), XXHighEnd and all that I have learned from Peter and others around, I will never go back to anything that was here before. This is just me but the older I get, the more lazy I am and even if someone was to prove me that vinyl or R2R tape is way better, I will not go back. "I gave".

But I sure learned that I have to adjust my expectations. My hearing will never be what it was many years ago, my sensitivity is not that good either, so I just take what I can and appreciate...

A friend told me once that it was valuable to try to change our angle of vision when something negative was happening... I won't say it is easy to do, but the more I advance in life, I feel less "edgy" about certain things I can't really change...

Not that this is of some help, but I felt the desire to share this with you and our community Happy

Regards,

Alain

93  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: B'ASS Current Amplifier on: June 06, 2016, 01:15:12 am
Hi Anthony,

It is obvious that my knowledge is so thin about the matter that I never really got worried about this, unless I would have heard something odd with this amplifier. The good thing is that I have another power amp that I could compare with the one I mostly use and there were not much differences I could really hear. On the contrary I had the feeling that the cheaper of them was a little "rougher" than the Spectral Audio.

I learned something new with the factor impedance, voltage and current - I will keep that in mind Happy

And as for the B'ass effects, my thoughts are the same as yours in your conclusion: the only way to see and feel what will happen, well... Is to get one Happy But it is also a matter of trust in Peter and that has not been lacking for many years, even if I am late in upgrading my NOS1...

Alain

Thanks Peter.

It should be a good thing since I do not "hear" this happening. All that was said from that person was about the graphic I showed with the speakers I own. But he did not hear them in real life.

And I can obviously imagine that it should be good in the results.

Alain

Ok. Since there are impedance variations depending on the frequency and these variations can make an amplifier pass from X watts to Y watts very rapidly, can this be a positive or a negative... ? Will the B'ass increase this behavior ?

Ha ha ! I feel lazy Wink

Nevermind Peter Happy It was just a question related with the compatibility between current, impedance and what would result of them. I am not sure myself that my sentence makes sense.

When I will be able, I will certainly order a B'ass with a VC, but I will ahve to ask questions about the # of amplifiers...

Here is the plot of the Tannoy System 15 DMT II...
98  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: B'ASS Current Amplifier on: June 05, 2016, 04:49:19 pm
Peter,

Well... "Mutilating" the sound (200 > 400 watts > 200, etc...) while impedance is "swinging" back and forth would "affect" the sound, but not in a good way. That was said from the frequency response and the change in impedance.

In other words, if my speakers would show a better response, without swinging between 4 and 8 ohms, the sound would be better.

Sorry if my very limited knowledge is showing...

Peter,

I was told by someone that judging by the frequency response plot of my main speakers (from my sig) and the consequent change in impedance (depending on the frequency), my power amp (also in my sig) would switch very quickly from 200 (under 8 ohms) to 400 watts per channel (under 4 ohms) - back and forth, mutilating the sound.

Would such a situation be put more in evidence with a B'ass ?

Hi Naidiver,

It happens to me from time to time Happy What I do is shut the dac OFF then turn it ON again.

Do not forget to remember that the Intona needs power to work, so no 5V cut from the PC...

Hope this helps.

Peter,

If you ever consider the possibility to sell your LPSU as a standalone - no matter if it is in a wooden box, a metal box, does come bare as is with the required cables, I would certainly be interested in getting one.

Thanks.

Peter,

I knew that Happy It is like it was when received, unless the files can inflate because of the ambiant humidity or else Wink

But I am OK with that. I can still use the ramdisk config with my other drive, even if it does not bring the same ecstasy...

Thanks anyway Happy

104  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd PC / Re: eSata + RAM OS does not work on: May 20, 2016, 05:08:19 pm
The fun thing is that if the "ram" load is effective, loading Windows in ram and booted from ram - all should be ok. It's only when one tries to "attach" the drive that something will be wrong (it will not connect)...

105  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Windows 8 ravings on: May 20, 2016, 04:13:29 pm
Yout thoughts about the W10 smoothness reminds me of a small anecdote.

One day I was listening to a song from Eric Johnson, with a good heavy and fuzzy sound. It was playing from the sound card of a laptop, connected to 2 speakers + sub (Bose...). I observed that the guitar was more "fuzzy" and interesting and I thought that it could be because of jitter... At the times we were with Win 7.
